We are looking to get one. Are you chilling with chilled water or gylcol, or both? From what I understand you don't want to send higher temps back to the gylcol chiller, so is common practice to drop temp with water first, then switch to gylcol if further cooling is needed.

Also how long is the chilling taking from mash temps to pitching temps? Thanks for any info.

Sorry for the late reply, I am using water that is chilled by a glycol chiller :P so it's about 4 degrees C, 40 degrees F

chilling from mash temps to pitching took me about 45 mins but this was a lautered mash - i did not use it for grain on mashing as my mash tun jacked worked fine for chilling.

  2. Hi There,

Im selling a tube in tube/tube in shell mash cooler that i've used twice - works great, but no longer needed as my mash tun does a good job of chilling with the cooling jackets and agitation and i've stopped lautering my mash.

each pass is 49.5", there are 8 tubes - 33ft total. 2" inner tube with 2" TC connections, outer tube is 3".

Glycol or cold water hookups are 1", standard 1.5" TC connections.

Asking $3000 CAD OBO + freight from Belleville, Ontario, Canada.

Did you get your agitator to seal?  If not call 417-778-6100 and ask for Tim. He's my employee that handles agitators, among other things, and he will help you get it lined out.

@Southernhighlander i did not get to the seal yet - I'll call in the morning, but i don't have the shaft size.  I'll speak to Tim and see what he requires

    Thanks!

Worst case until you get the seal fixed if not running agitation, you could use some distillers paste (Flour and Water) mixed up to seal around the shaft.

In terms of flooding, in the first picture of the last post you have a capped port, is that a return port? If so you could run individual return lines from each column to allow more flow.

I'll give the paste a shot - i'm running just the single column for the vodka production, but i agree that it seemed like a flow issue.  separating the lines might be a good idea as well. Thanks!

You could also be over pressurizing your pot with too much agitation.

Typically when i'm running vodka, it's without agitation - however the agitator vapor seal is leaking ONLY when running the vodka column

Send me a picture of the drain tube that goes from the bottom plate to the collection area below where it drains back to the pot. Im betting I have about a 14$ solution (might be more in Canada lol)

Hope this help.  I got excited at the idea of this being a $14 dollar fix, or a 200 dollar in canadian dollars haha.

You say plates flooding.  But how give more specific info.  For vodka they are supposed to flood.  I assume you mean more that they are not draining properly then filling up?

If so where top of column bottom of column?  How much how fast?  Just more detailed info

Hey thanks for the reply - some additional details:

they aren't draining properly - after equalizing the plates under full reflux, the bottom plates (bottom 2 to 3) will fill entirely.  I can only correct this slightly by taking reflux off all together.

It's as if they aren't able to drain to the pot quick enough

  8. Hi Guys,

Just getting into production at my distillery and i have a 600L (around 160 gallon) hybrid still direct from China that i purhcased a few years back, but only recently started running on it.

Knowing what i know now, i don't think i would have ever bought direct from china as the after support is terrible.

That said, I'm stuck with it now, but need the community help please.

My 20 plate column is flooding whenever i try to run vodka and more recently the agitator motor seal started leaking vapor. Because of this i've stopped using it and stopped production.

I've attached pictures hoping that someone out there can help me figure out how to fix the flooding issue and maybe suggest where i could get replacement seals.

I'm located near Toronto, Ontario, but this is a real show stopper for me.  Anything will help! Much appreciated.

Willing to pay for assistance as well.

  10. Hi all!

Just looking for some help from the local Ontario folks.  I am building a distillery near Belleville Ontario and i am struggling to find someone who will do the steam piping for me.  I've purchased a boiler from another distiller on here (thanks!).   Anyone have any recommendations? i'm sort of desperate at this point.

    Thanks!

I apologize if I was sounding negative. I tend to think very practically.

Urban Distilleries in Kelowna does a 5 day workshop. I've taken it, it's not bad.

Also, the Sons of Vancouver Distillery in Vancouver offers a 5 day version that is smaller in class size and very hands on. Quite good I'm told.

We spent five years developing our distillery concept. Two years thinking about it seriously and then  roughly two and a half years to get the zoning, licenses, build the distillery, etc. We've been open now for about a year and a half.

We love the lifestyle and find it very satisfying and we get lots of local enthusiasm.

It is important to mention - your spouse has to be in 100%. If she isn't - that's going to be hard to reconcile as this work is very all encompassing.

    Focus on that last point!

I too am in the final stages of building a farm distillery in Eastern ontario.  You should get started now if you're planning on retiring in 5 years! haha, I've been at it since 2016 and i'm still nowhere near opening.

These kind of complaints really boil my piss.  When people don't understand they fear -- the old NIMBY argument. Infuriating. Best of luck in addresses their (generally) baseless concerns. We're all pulling for you!

Thanks so much.  This is why I love the distillers and brewers of the world.  We all are in support of each other.

    Much appreciated.

Someone has had too much time on their hands. Where are you located?

    LOL i agree.

I'm located in Toronto Canada, and building the distillery a little east of here in a rural town.

There have been several complaints ranging from the black fungus, fire concerns, butyic acid smells and pollution concerns.  I just want to be prepared to debunk these issues come next week when I have the town hall meeting.

The key is to accept their concern as valid, and communicate this, but show how it would not apply given your scale.

To wholesale dismiss a concern as not real, that's asking for a problem.

Find the ethanol loss estimates of the big rickhouses where this is a problem, and compare that to what your annual production is.  People are smart, they'll see the amount of ethanol loss to create a problem is orders of magnitude greater than is being discussed.

    Great advice! Thanks!

    Hi There,

In my recent zone change amendment for a micro distillery, one major point of opposition is the black sludge/fungus that grows around major distilleries in the world.

I'm not really even sure how to argue this point, but I have no evidence of this happening on a micro distilling level.

Do you guys have any experience with how to calm the public regading these opinions?

    Thanks!
