  1. What's the wisdom on getting a mixer for the kettle? I had one in my Hoga and the copper bound the output shaft and fried the motor. I want to replace it, but also need to find some sort of stainless pilot bearing so I can re-enforce the mounting and not lose the motor again through bind. Are there any folks who provide such motors that know our industry and can help with the whole sealed tank, higher heat, low rpm etc etc issues we face? Thanks John
  2. Dave, Thanks os much for your post! It is very timely in my development curve. If you don't mind, I'll shoot you a pm and ask your opinion on a couple of items I'm faced with today? John
  3. Hi Gang, I'm a relative Newb to this forum and to the industry. I released Jinn Gin on July 27th at my distilleries grand opening here in CO. I struggle with the Louching effect based on temp. When its a nice warm evening there's nice clear gin in the tasting room...but when the evening temps drop below 65 degs it start to see louching. I have been adjusting the gns "blending" to try and find that ideal balance. I am OK with Louching when its pored into a G&T or the like, but need to keep it clear for market appeal as it travels in winter up to the ski slopes. One thing I have considered but not yet tried is if working on a shorter maceration time would reduce the oils in solution and thus carried over. I'll give it a try in the next week or two and let you know how it works. K John
  4. I have the Larger Blue Independence Boiler still for sale: http://adiforums.com/index.php?showtopic=3191 It is 280K BTU. I imagine it will heat your mash and still independently to necessary levels within 30-45 minutes. Let me know if you are interested. John K J Wood Distillers Berthoud, CO 303-517-7697
  5. Awesome! Thanks. I've sent an email to get info from them. Are there any good used equip sites for these pieces of equipment?
  6. Hey Gang, Starting to put my head around the most efficient way to process my corn. Can save as much as $0.35/lb if I grind it myself... Questions: Best place to shop for one? Any brands or models to look for/ stay away from? Thanks in Advance! K J Wood Distillers. John
  7. If we are registered to attend the ADI Conference that week will we already be gaining admission or is this a separate Ticket? Thanks John
  8. These Boilers were purchased by me off Craigslist for installation in my new Distillery. The Nat Gas Utility to the building is insufficient to support them so I am going a different direction to suit my needs. The Thermaflo unit originates out of an Oregon Brewery that out-grew this boiler. To the best of my knowledge it is fully functional. We have air pressure tested it and replaced the only damaged item, the condensate loop. The Burnham Independence unit came to me from Colorado Springs out of a large Victorian home. It was put into service in 2008 and was then removed last year when the home was gutted for renovation. I was told that the place sat vacant for approx 6 months. So this unit should only have about 2.5 years of service on it. We have also air pressure tested this unit and to the best of my knowledge it works just fine. $3600.00 for Both or as below. 9. Curtis, I'm planning a similar project here in CO. If it isn't too much to ask; Could I get those in CO to include me in the email response? Thanks John KJWDistillers Northern CO.
  10. To be Transparent: I am new to this industry and in the planning phase of my own Craft Distillery in northern CO. That said, I have 15 years of Beverage Marketing in my background infused with time at Coca-Cola and dabbling in the Micro-Brew world. Having owned and operated small businesses in various sectors the two adages that come to mind while reading this string are: 1) You can grow big, or you can grow profitable. 2)The superior man understands what is right; the inferior man understands what will sell. My plan is to roll out with a blended CO single malt while my own recipe is in the casks, a Gin, and a reposado Tequila/Mescal; keeping a manageable cash-flow model in place while focusing on quality of product and effectiveness of brand positioning. My goal is to develop a distillery that can be passed on, not grown and sold. If I can understand what is 'right' and maintain profitability, the end goal should be attainable: A high quality, well respected and sustainable craft distillery that I can pass on to my children or grand children. Will these brands evolve and mature as my knowledge and experience develops? Sure. Will I strive to be all things to the marketplace and to my customers, always looking to profit? Probably not. Will Quality and Brand development always be in my forefront? Definitely. So my expectation is that over the first 3-5 years I will offer 3 products to the marketplace, but may end up with 6, 8, 12 "brands" by the time I find the sweet-spot. I still think that is "the same thing every day". Wood's
  11. Hi Gang, I'm a Newb, working on a new distillery project in CO. In reading through the other threads in this section I noticed that no one addressed the largest distribution channel out there...The Internet! So a few Questions: Are there TTB regs against this? Can a Distiller in a "direct to retail" state sell direct to consumers in another state via the Internet? Having seen a couple of "Scotch" online sales pages; Is the Internet a viable channel for international sales? Just interested to know the thinking. Thanks in advance.
  12. Hi Gang, I'm a newb working on a new Distillery Business plan in CO. I saw something in a newspaper write up concerning distilleries in Northern Colorado last month. In the article the comment was made that "Distilleries need to be located in Industrial Zones, that's why ...couldn't locate his in the downtown." I've read through all of Article(s) 46,47, and 48 of the CO code and can't see where that requirement is defined. Is there any truth to this, or can one's distillery be located in a downtown commercial zone if the City/municipality allows it? Thanks in advance. This is my first of I'm sure many questions!
  13. What size water line (3/4, 1, 1.5") are you planning? I'm looking at a building right now that only has a 3/4 inch supply line. Will that be sufficient for this size production? Thanks in advance! John
