  1. I was told by one still manufacturer when I was two years in the planning process that my still would be the least of my expenses and I didn't believe him. I am now close to opening my doors and he was absolutely correct. The professional fees ate up thousands of dollars I did not count on at all. Engineering, lawyers, permits, etc. It can be done on a shoe string, but if you don't have something in reserve for the pile of unexpected expenses it could be a rude awakening. As for it being profitable, I don't yet know. The only thing I know for sure is if you don't try it won't happen. Cheers
  2. Hello, Yes, I was a bystander during your meeting last year at the Carnival, It was very informative and I will definitely become a member. Regrettably I won't be able to make the carnival this year. Thank you for all your hard work and efforts to move California out of the dark ages.
  3. Roberto, there maybe some Juniper just north of us but it's not prolific and not sure of the species. I will be investigating more closely in the future. Griffin, Don't let anybody know about our little slice of paradise and it will be the same when you get back to do it again. :-)) When you do come back, definitely look me up. We have a whole lot of Brewery's and now' Distilleries in the area. Mad River Brewery is just a block from us.
  4. Awesome, congratulations. No small feat. This whole process of opening a distillery reminds me of a saying I once hard; "When planning a journey you own it, once the journey begins it owns you" Best of luck with your endeavors...
  5. Mike, I will definitely do that. Thank You. I have little doubt it will become an issue sooner than later. Michael
  6. Roberto, thank you I will do that... Skaalveen, The mouth of the Matole is one of the most remote places on the entire coast of CA. VERY few people have ever been there. Congratulations on finding it.
  7. We are located in Blue Lake, Humboldt County. Just about 80 miles south of Oregon. Many of your post have been relevant to my process. Thank you. Michael
  8. Hello from Jewell Distillery, We just yesterday received our DSP. We are very excited and proud to have made it through all the hurtles. Now the work begins. To all of you who have been generous with your time and information, it has been crucial to the development of our vision-THANK YOU. The distillery and tasting room will open fall of 2015 Website Coming Soon
  9. Hello' I am in the process of opening a distillery in Northern CA. I am waiting on my DSP while doing my build-out. I don't have facebook but I can write a letter. The below recommendation was sent to me by a colleague in the industry. An idea I think worth bringing up and promoting. If every distiller with a Facebook page asked everyone who followed it to write and call the congressmen with complaints, and to encourage others to do so on their own pages, with their own tweets, or whatever, you could get some attention paid to this matter.
  10. I too am in the final stages of dealing with building officials concerning a direct fired still. The fire marshal has no problem, so he says. The actual building official has not signed off on it yet. We'll see. Many folks on the forum discourage the use of direct fire for obvious reasons. Safety should always be a concern and due diligence is required, but personally, I don't have the deep pockets others seem to enjoy and I plan on making it work. I wish you the best of luck. Where about are you located? If I get any valuable information I will pass it along.
  11. Thank you both very much for the reply. My computer was down for a few days so that is why the delay in getting back to you. Do you have any examples of a label with the name obscured with a graphic? I went over the COLA definitions and it does not say anything about this issue specifically and all the searches I did for moon shine labels have no examples. Thank you.....
  12. I am in the process of designing a label for Moon Shine and wondered if Moon Shine could be partially covered with a graphic? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you
  13. Expeditors INT is a Seattle based company and has an office in SF. I used them for over 10 years. SBS, Superior Brokerage Services out of FL is who I use now. They're great. Let me know if you have any other questions.
