  2. Hey guys hope all is well. So I'm in the middle of a vodka run and my distillate is pulsing. By this I mean, the distillate will completely stop for like 10-15 seconds and then all of a sudden open the flood gates for like 5 seconds. This has only happened once before on a previous run. Normally my still is pretty steady stream a little variation in flow rate but nothing this drastic. My still is a small 50 gallon it has four plates and a large random packed section with copper scrubbers and raschig rings. I am running a dephlag with little trickle of water through it to maintain 95% abv. So Why is my distillate flow rate so crazy today?? thank you.

  4. I'm starting up a (very) micro distillery and looking for a solution for an electric stripping still. We're going to be distilling off-grain with electric heat to start to avoid the need for a boiler system. I've got my spirit still sizing/sourcing figured out but I'm having trouble sorting out where to buy/source my stripping still. I need 1000L capacity minimum and I'm trying to avoid a bain marie style still. Most companies I've talked to are recommending not to use electric elements in the stripping still to avoid scorching, but I know people who are using electric with low watt density elements and having no issues or off flavours. Thoughts? Recommendations for companies who can provide such a still?
  5. I use pot still to make distillation . Head finished 83%, hearts 79% end. How could you get lower degree than I collected by using flute still. I dont get it, could you answer me... My Calculation cuts: %14 head, %65 hearts ex:7:25 chapter: Thanks...
  6. SOLD TO A VERY NICE HOME Hey everyone! We're almost ready to receive our new still so it's time to re-post this beauty This still was awesome for me. It enabled me to grow my business for 3 years before investing in a huge system. I was able to stay fully electric for years, significantly cutting down my initial investment costs. I was able to run everything on one still, stripping ferments, spirit runs, gin runs and rum all in one place. In year 2 I added an electric continuous stripping still and that kept me going all the way to the end of year 3. Now its time to go big, and pass this starter system on. (I'm not selling the continuous stripper yet, but we can talk if you're interested) We will run this still 6 days a week right up to when we turn it off. If the buyer wants to come down and see it in action, we'd be happy to provide on-site training for a few days. Perfect for a startup Now the deets: Artisan Still Design (ASD) Delivered Nov 2014 60 Gallon Series 1 Modular Still Computer Controlled with integrated electric heat and Dephlegmator controll (can be run full-manual) 304 Stainless steel boiler, electric Baine Marie Heat (3 x 4500W Elements) - easily run on steam if you want 16 plate fully versatile stainless column with copper caps French Brandy style copper helmet Custom designed in-line Gin Basket 2hp CIP system Fully Versatile from stripping to gin/rum/whiskey/brandy and vodka on 1 still! 7. Has anyone looked into using an electric steam generator for heating their mash tun and/or still? I'm just starting to look at this option and wanted to see if anyone has experience on the matter. A boiler would be great, but I'm in a rental space in which I don't plan to stay in past 3-5 years and I'd also be responsible for installing and subsequently removing everything I alter while I occupy the space. This seems like a reasonable alternative to get the steam heating I desire and still keep my impact on the space low.
  8. Couldn't find a good thread about this topic, so I figured I'd start one. What are people using to cool their condenser/dephleg on their spirit still? city water? recirculation? glycol? I'm weighing my options and would love to see what people have found to work best!
  9. 3_19_18 M&S SALES LISTING ALL PRICES NEGOTIABLE.pdf Millers and Saints Distillery is stopping production. We are selling all equipment, and the brand. Everything can be yours. Let us know what it is worth to you. This pricing does not include delivery. See all items as listed in the pdf. The owner/distillers at Millers and Saints Distillery of Saint Louis Park, MN are moving out of the spirits business and focusing on other aspects of the beverage industry. As a result, we have Distilling equipment and a Branding Package for sale. MADE IN THE USA. -STILL - We are asking $40,000.00 The still is a 300gal copper top, steam jacketed pot still with a 14 plate 12 gauge copper column with 4 inch windows to the side. The column has a 16 gauge, 304 dimple copper jacketed deflegmator at the top and feeds into a 28 pipe, water cooled, stainless steel condenser. Dual temperature gauges at the top of the still and column allow exacting temperature awareness. The column and condenser are connected to a stainless steel frame for a compact and stable configuration. The still piping is configured to allow inline use of the column for higher proof spirits or a valve controlled bypass for lower proof spirits. The still, column and condenser were made in the USA by Global Stainless of Canby, Oregon. Global Stainless has a long history of providing exceptional equipment to the American and Canadian beer and spirits industries. The still has been in operation for under 4 years and has been run less than 150 times. It is in perfect working order. 10. Did you know we build continuous stills? We have several types and we build them custom to what works best for the customer. We computer model each and every unit for maximum performance. We tune each one and run it on a computer model before starting the first weld. We have a couple new turn key models coming out that will be skid mount with steam generator (or no steam generator) for simple use. We are currently completing our line of single pass continuous stills, no more just stripping, now do just one and done! Plus the best thing is these will sell for a very very inexpensive price tag as compared to what is on the market now, not to mention that are through put of GPM is 5 times more than what is out on the market. I will be posting pics soon of my current continuous still build right here in IOWA. We are building one of the largest continuous stills for any micro distillery in North America, maybe the world. Capable of operating at just over 30 gallons per minute, tuned at 17 gpm. Able to distill down 9000 gallons in about 8-9 hours. Big 6" sight glasses (2 per tray 180degress apart) so you can look right thought it, complete with LED lights, and go pro cameras. Also, a custom 550g pot still. Stay tuned. 11. We just bought A full copper pot still and a mash tun from Specific Mechanical In BC, Canada. On time delivery, excellent support during installation and startup even dough we are located 6 provinces appart! Great design team also as we were a bit picky on the look of our equipment! I would recommend them to anybody and I will surely buy my next still there! You can see there work on our website distilleriedustlaurent.com and on our Facebook page!
  12. A. The system was designed for around 200 gallons per hour of feed at around 10% alcohol. I do not think it is all that important how much alcohol is in the wash, but the feed rate can be probably a low of 100 to maybe a high of 250-300. At a 200 gallon-per-hour feed rate, that would be slightly over three gallons a minute going in. The product passes through a pipe in a pipe heat exchanger where it would be heated up from the fermentation temperature to approximately 150°F entering the top of the beer column. I would recommend you set the pipe in a pipe heat exchanger horizontal rather than vertical. In the event you shut it down without completely emptying it, you will not plug it up in the bottom elbows. B. The steam addition to the unit would be around 300 pounds per hour, the equivalent of about 10 horsepower of steam. A 22 horse power boiler unit that would run at about eight to 10 usage with plenty of steam for mashing. This steam should heat the bottom of the column to approximately 215-217°F, and I would have a dial thermometer at the bottom or a couple of plates up from the bottom of this column to validate that temperature for good viewing from ground level. You will also run about three psig in the bottom of the beer column when all of the trays are adequately filled. The steam can be controlled with a control valve to temperature at the bottom of the column or manually run with a hand-operated steam globe valve. If you are feeding the column with a positive displacement pump of some kind, like a Tuthill or something along those lines, you can also run the steam in manual and the column will be fairly stable. C. The 200 gallons an hour input, minus the ethanol boiled out, plus the direct inject steam condensate will result in approximately 200 gallons an hour out the bottom of the beer column. This product will be approximately 215°F, and when it cross-flows with the beer going in, it will be cooled down to somewhere around 150°F. Again, I would recommend a small lobe pump (Tuthill or equal) to pump the bottom product--a VFD drive on the electric motor will allow for variable speed?and take the product through the heat exchanger and discharged. The vapors off the top of the beer column are then transferred through the three-inch line to the bottom of the rectifier, and they will be approximately 100 proof. D. The bottom product off the rectifier column, which is the second column, will be approximately 100 proof and will return back to the top of the beer column. This system originally had a 1/8th horsepower centrifugal pump that pumped off the bottom of the rectifier to the top of the beer column and was more of a continuous running, maintain empty function. In order to make the 190 proof off the top of the rectifier column, there was cooling of the vapors to create a certain level of reflux. That would be for every three gallons of vapor going up the column, two gallons were condensed and returned back down the column for cooling. This was accomplished by controlling the flow of water through the coil in the top of the rectifier column coming in at (E) and coming out at (F). The flow here is calculated to be about 20 gallons per minute with a 20° temperature rise. Since this is making whiskey there is no need to run water through points (E) and (F). The vapors off the top of the rectifier column go over to the condenser where the final ethanol vapors are condensed. The flow in the product condenser, on the other hand, is not controlled. G & H. The cooling water going into (G) would be somewhere around 15 gallons per minute, and it would have about a 10° temperature rise at that flow rate. It would come out at (H) and either go to drain or to some type of a small cooling tower. Either way, this does give you a general idea of the water needed for the condenser. Below G&H will be another set of condensing tubes. If you return some product from the bottom of the beer column to this set of tubes, it will evaporate the heads and allow you to collect from the top copper tube on the side of the condenser. The copper tube below that is really for temp reassurance. I. Based on the 200 gallons an hour input at 10% ethanol, you will have somewhere between 20 and 22 gallons per hour of ethanol produced from (I) at 140-160 proof. The bottom part of that condenser was intended to be a small reservoir to hold the product. Then it was pumped from there to storage somewhere. For info - pjc@taconicdistillery.com $15K OBO

  15. Just bought my first column! Very exciting, but it's used so it needs a good cleaning as it has quite a bit of build up inside. What's the best way to clean/refurb? Just the usual rinse/caustic/rinse/acid/rinse? I've seen some people recommend scrubbing with steel wool - bad/good idea?

  18. Hello, Do you have a small still sitting in the corner of your space collecting dust? Want to unload it and take the kids to Disney Land? We are looking to buy a small starter/small batch R&D still. Something in the 26-50 gallon range we be perfect. We have currently researched Hillybilly, Mile High, and Still Dragon stills. Everything from those as simple as single boilers with 6 plates to baine marie-types with agitators are under consideration. However, we are trying to keep costs down and still develop quality product while implementing the "starting small" concept. If you have one, know of any available through someone else, or have a particular opionio regarding your favorite R&D still, please let me know. Much appreciated, Curt
  19. For Sale: "PDA-II (PDA-2) LM Medium Power Distillation Device" constructed by the Amphora Society. (The Amphora Society literally wrote the book on artisan distilling, see the Compleat Distiller, http://www.amazon.co...n/dp/0476008190). For sale is the copper column (incl any hoses, attached copper parts, and brass flange pictured) only, anything stainless in the picture is not included. About the PDA-II's time with us: We purchased this unit new from Mike McCaw and the Amphora Society in 2006 leading up to the license of our facility. We played with this piece a little while we were in our recipe-development phase. It was purchased with the intent of being an integral part of our process, however after all of the pieces finally came together, this unit was not part of the final plan. More details about the PDA-II are best copied from the introduction to the paperwork that will accompanies the unit: "The PDA-II family of distillation equipment is intended for pilot plant and small commercial scale use. The PDA-II LM can operate with 4-10 kW of boiler power. The design is optimized for 5-6kW. It is intended for professional use, by persons trained and familiar with distillation procedures. Licensing, registration, and adherence to local rules, regulations, and laws are the responsibility of the purchaser. The Liquid Management (LM) version of the PDA-II family is fully adjustable for the production of all types of spirits. When operate at high reflux ratios, it produces ultra-pure azeotropic ethanol, suitable for laboratory use, or for the compounding of medicines, essences, or spirits. This degree of purity is obtained by restricting the device to very high reflux ratios, in the range of 90-100%. This allows the column to be equilibrated, and for any methanol or ethyl acetate ("heads") present to be drawn off most efficiently at very low collection rates before beginning to collection of purified ethanol. When operated at lower reflux ratios, it can achieve any desired degree of separation or purification along with the corresponding flavor profile. IT can operate as a simple pot-still, a whiskey still, brandy still, rum still, or any other type of beverage still, all by adjusting the reflux ratio and the amount of packing in the column." Measurements & Dims: Height: 56 inches Diameter: 3 Inches Packing: Structured Copper Mesh. Included with purchase is a large quantity of unused mesh (pictured). Unit will be shipped disassembled. It is the responsibility of the purchaser to re-assemble. Original instructions are included, and no fancy techniques (like soldering or brazing) are required. Asking price: $2,975 (includes shipping and insurance to anywhere in the lower 48). Credit cards welcomed. The picture attached and uploaded has been scaled down to meet forum posting requirements. Full size pics can be found at www.twenty2vodka.com/ADI/PDA2/ Additional questions, please email me directly to scott - at- twenty2vodka.com as I can't seem to get the forum emails to come thru. or call 207-974-3055 Thanks!! -Scott

  25. If you want a distillery with a centerpiece still, this is the one. Personally I never felt all the high tech stuff was necessary to make outstanding whisky. I've tasted some pretty bad stuff on some very expensive equipment. If you want to flex your passion go old school. Excel has the price list and the prices are lowered. The bank wants money. Cheers, https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0ByAZVTVzaBqLOS0wQ0ljNXF1a3M?usp=sharing Equipment list.xlsx
