  1. I am setting up a new distillery, and the local sanitation wastewater treatment plant is concerned about what we will be putting down the drain. I will be making rum, vodka, and gin, all from a molasses base. The dunder will go to local farmers, so the plant operator's concern of high COD and BOD and solids is nothing to worry about there. I will be making the vodka/gin from the redistilled tails of the rum run. What I am wondering is, does anyone have the BOD (Biological Oxygen Demand) or COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) numbers on effluent from distilled tails? I have tried hard to search for this but can't seem to find any information, and the wastewater plant operator is really concerned about it as he doesn't know anything about spirit production. I am truly confident that it will be safe to process, especially in small volumes compared to what they receive every day, but I would love to have some sources or hard numbers I can give him. Thanks for reading!
  2. Some resources for those struggling with waste (including me) Note "EPA" doc is from Australia not USA Tacoma, WA has local code that may give you a sense of the scope Section 12.08 Tacoma has a great "start up" document in the P-1300.....lots of basic stuff to review----that town has a distilling district!! Tacoma, Wa typical City Code SEE SECTION 12.08---Title12-Utilities.pdf Treatment and Reuse of Distillery Wastewater.pdf Tacoma, WA---P-1300-Craft-Distillery.pdf EPA Distillery Guidelines.pdf NYS DEC.pdf
  3. Do you process your spent wash/pot ale/spent lees before discharging it down the sewer ? I am looking at the sewer rates here in California, and the COD load surcharge (based upon the expected COD load of 46,000 mg/liter) will add 10x to the cost of just discharging water.
  4. Hey folks, i really need your help here, we are starting a new distillery and the local folks are asking a great question. We will make whiskey. What we are mostly interested in are the highlighted areas below total BOD per mg/l and TSS per mg/l, keeping in mind that the backset/spent grains (spillage) and spent yeast will go to the farmers (we will use conical fermentors and we harvest the yeast) we also use a 2 micron filter before sending the beer to the still kettle. we will use an average of 2- 2.5 pounds of grain per gallon of water and all of our wort will be lautered. we will not be fermenting on the grain. any help will be very valuable. if you know of a company that does this type of work, i will gladly pay for their services. Thank you gain Chemical, Physical or Biological characteristic Standards Biochemical oxygen demand 145 Lbs. a day at a concentration not to exceed 200 mg/l TSS 145 Lbs. a day at a concentration not to exceed 200 mg/l
