  7. We had a surplus of malted corn sitting around and tried using it as the corn component in our grain bill to use it up. I just started stripping it today and am worried about how it will turn out. My strip tastes like corn husk. I'm guessing this is not something that will be removed in the head cuts, and have no idea how this flavor will age. Is this a good thing in disguise or have we made a terrible mistake?

  9. Hello, we had been experimenting with a recipe on a small scale and bumped it to large for production and it did not turn out so we have an excess of grain here we are not using. I would say we have roughly 750 pounds of red wheat in a large super tote and we have 1600 pounds of malted barley, that is bagged in 50 pound sacks, which is 32 sacks. We would like to get rid of it, and would sell it off at .30 cents a pound. Serious inquiries only, for more information contact kbcdistillingcompany@gmail.com.

We are here to help distillers produce the best spirits possible by providing you with the highest quality grains available anywhere. Also when you deal with us you know that the grain you are using is coming from family owned farms and all the certificates for the grain you purchase are available anytime you need them so that you can always be sure your getting 100% certified organic grains. http://www.sugarhillgrain.com

  14. Hello Forum, My farm has extra Non-GMO corn available this year, about 600 bushel (around 570 50# bags). It's Yellow #2 field corn. It's not certified organic, but it is grown without pesticides or herbicides. We're using most of this year's crop, sold about 600 bushel so far, and this is the last we have. I have a deal with my farmer so he sets the prices and gets what we sell to cover costs. We're selling it as-is; first to pay gets it. We'd like to have it accounted for before winter hits. Pricing: $12.00 per bushel, if you take the entire 600 bushel, unbagged. Just bulk grain. You'll need to arrange delivery/pickup. I don't have a grain truck to spare. $14.00 per 50# bag if you want it bagged and not ground. 200 bag minimum. $17.00 per 50# bag if I have to take it in to the mill to clean it, mill it, and bag it. 200 bag minimum. If you want less than 200 bags, the cost will jump to $20 per bag. It's a real pain in the rear! Shipping is included in the St. Louis area. (I'd prefer if the buyer comes and picks it up, though.) Shipping is the responsibility of the buyer if outside the St. Louis Area. Just have corn. No other crops right now. May have extra winter wheat in the Spring. Send me an email t0 chris (at) coulterandpayne.com if you're interested. Thanks, Chris Burnette Coulter & Payne Farm Distillery Shawnee Bend Farms Union, Missouri

  16. Given that most of us are fairly small, I was hoping to get a discussion going regarding quality control of fermentable products. Do you measure the moisture content of grains and if so, how? How do you ensure a grain shipment is up to standards; i.e. contaminant free, pesticide free, etc? What other faults do you look for? We are small enough we buy from a local grain mill that supplies bakeries and restaurants so it's mostly visual inspection for grain size and the like..
  17. Hi all, To date I have experimented with small batches but want to step up a notch and need recommendations on where to get grain and malt in the Nashville, TN area or as close as I can. Buying from craft beer stores has been fine up to now but far too expensive for large batches. Thanks in advance, Ray
  18. Does anyone know if sprayed on mold inhibitors for flaked maize/corn is dangerous? I have some flaked corn that has been sprayed with a mold inhibitor called Rout, that I got from a commercial feed mill. Wondering if I can use it in my grain bill without any issues?

  20. So I am looking at different ways to improve yield and sugar content without actually forcing a change to the definition of "corn whiskey". I have been doing research on beer production and commonly dextrose can be added prior to fermentation to improve potential alcohol. Since dextrose (corn sugar) is a 100% corn product, if I add 1/2 lb per gallon, can I call my product "corn whiskey". http://www.amazon.com/Corn-Sugar--50-lbs/dp/B0064OACFO/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1391302120&sr=8-9&keywords=corn+sugar
  21. Hi, I like everyone else would like to start my own distillery. In am in the Oregon and Washington State area and I know WA requires a craft distillery to produce its product from at least 51% grain grown from within the state. Oregon doesn't have that requirement, but I would like to support local farmers, and the local economy, and purchase things like; corn, wheat, barley, rye, etc direct from local farmers in Oregon and/or Washington. What I can't find is an easy way to do this. Can anyone help? How do you buy things like corn or wheat from a local farmer? Where? Is there a co-op or certain place/website I can go to to do this? Thank you for your time! John
