  7. Hey all, We have finally released our new podcast covering the distilling industry! It features Jason Zeno of Beam-Suntory, Colton Weinstein of Corsair Distillery, and Brian Christensen of Artisan Spirit Magazine. In our first three episodes, we cover the ‘newly’ passed FET reduction, what it means to the industry and our thoughts on where we/it are headed. Part 1 & 2 were recorded prior to the passage of the bill, and cover many of the lobbying efforts members of our industry took in order to get the bill through. In part 3 the bill has finally passed. We cover the specifics of what actually passed, and what we do next! We will be continuing to release episodes covering everything distilling. Competitions and judging, tasting sheets, mashes, and conventions are just a few of the topics already lined up in the queue! Our hope is that we can use this podcast as a way to give back to the community, and much like this forum put the education and information out there for those who want it. The show is for you all, so any feedback, comments, questions, show ideas, ect., would be appreciated! Look for us wherever you download your podcasts from and check out our website...https://stilltalkingpodcast.com And don’t forget to follow us on the social media, @stillcast

  11. Hello everyone from Distillery University! We've been having a lot of success with our 3 and 5-day hands-on Workshops, so we've decided to double-down and start offering spirit-specific events, as well. Our first spirit Workshop is the Ultimate Gin Workshop, coming to Spokane, WA on January 14th and 15th, 2017. Students will learn everything there is to know about gin formulation, distillation, blending, etc. from award-winning distiller Todd Buckley. His gin was rated a 94 in 2014 by the Beverage Testing Institute, beating out big brands like Beefeater, Tanqueray and Bombay Sapphire (link). We'll also be covering botanical selection, and we'll have a collection of various botanical samples on hand to experience. These come courtesy of Morning Myst Botanics. We'll also be hearing from Paul Ziegman, owner and Master Distiller at Tinbender Craft Distillery. As someone who personally built every piece of equipment in his distillery, he'll be covering equipment construction, design, layout and other considerations. Later on in the evening we'll adjourn to a local watering hole for a gin-focused sensory experience and tasting event. We'll sample 7 different gins and Todd will walk us through the different essences and botanicals we can perceive. The next day will consist of a half-day back in the classroom, then a trip out to Palouse Pint malthouse. Master Maltster Joel Williamson will give us a tour and allow us to sample his various types of malt. All students will receive a free Lifetime membership to Distillery University, where you can learn from our existing 46 hours of video coursework, as well as the footage from all future Workshops. Early registration ends soon and space is limited, so get in while you can to reserve a space. 14. Hi everyone! Rockwell Rutter from Distillery University here. I wanted to give everyone an update on our Hands-on Workshop coming June 20-24 in Spokane, WA. The March Workshop was an absolute success; we had folks come in from all 4 corners of the country to participate in the 5-day event and everyone left with a smile and new energy for their distillery project. In addition to the classwork and the actual hands-on learning at Tinbender Craft Distillery, we also organized a few after-hours events for people to enjoy. We toured Spokane Industries (tank manufacturer) and held several group dinners and tasting events at local bars and restaurants. There were also a few surprise gifts for everyone (that I won't reveal here), except for one. In addition to the recorded footage of the entire Workshop now available through their account on DistilleryUniversity.com, and the accompanying Powerpoint presentations, attendees were also gifted an EXTENSIVE Business Plan Formulation tool. This software tool will help them with forecasting, expense planning, batch costing, and a host of other business plan requirements as they move closer to starting their distilleries. Now that the Workshop is over, we're gearing up for the next one this June. The Early Registration discount ends on 5/22, so don't miss your chance to save $500. Every registration comes with a free Lifetime Access membership to the online content, so you'll have the benefit viewing the Workshop you attended, as well as the 37 hours of other content that's currently available. We'd love to have you join us next month. Here's a link to learn more: https://distilleryuniversity.com/hands-on-workshop/. And here's a link to a short (one-minute) video showcasing some of the actual hands-on learning: https://vimeo.com/163875286 Here's what a few attendees had to say: “I congratulate the team at Distilling University for the training workshop they have organized. The workshop included a good mix of seminar and on-site education, highlighted by our visit of an equipment manufacturer and local distillery. Furthermore, I made great friends and professional contacts in the group with which i am still keeping in touch. Thank you to Rockwell, Dan and Todd. Cheers!" - E. Garcia. "Thank you very much for an excellent week of learning. It was well worth the effort. The Workshop paid for itself before the first break on day one." - J. Calderon. "So much practical experience and knowledge. Learning facts is fun, but learning why they're important and how to use them is awesome." - A. Lyon Cheers! 19. I am the owner at Yellow Rose Distilling, Houston’s first legal whiskey distillery. After several years of planning, Yellow Rose is in the process of building a new distillery and tasting room, in the heart of Houston. We are well on their way, but it’s now time to install the equipment and setup the tasting room. These are very exciting times and we want you to be involved! Yellow Rose is using a cool program called Kickstarter (www.kickstarter.com) to help engage the local community and raise awareness of our brand. If you are not familiar with Kickstarter, it’s an online site that allows startup businesses to reward friends, customers and others with special amenities. In exchange, givers provide a donation to help the business complete a specified task. In the case of Yellow Rose, we are raising $25,000 to help with the build-out of the distillery and tasting room. In exchange, some really cool rewards are being offered. Example rewards include, whiskey barrels, maple syrup, whiskey barrel bar tables, special events, private parties, mixology classes and distillery training classes. There are some higher end rewards, that I hope many of you will find interesting and helpful. We are offering single day and week long learning experiences. We already have 4 Double Gold medal winning whiskeys, and many have asked if we already offer classes to learn the distilling, distribution, sales and marketing sides of owning a distillery. This is your opportunity to help a new distillery and learn more of the craft for yourself. This is the perfect opportunity for someone who is interested in starting their own distillery. The power of this campaign is in numbers. Even small donations and rewards add up quickly if we can get everyone on board! Kickstarter is unique because it is all or nothing! If we make our goal, we will get funded, but if we do not reach our goal, we get nothing. Please consider our request and help us get the word out about our campaign! At the conclusion of the Kickstarter we will be hosting a “go green” event celebrating the success and opening of our distillery. We hope you can join us, it will be a great time! Thanks for your support and time, Ryan Baird www.start.yellowrosedistilling.com
  20. Since so many distilleries are now offering distilling classes and these announcements tend to get cross posted to many of the forums, I have created a new forum called "Education". This is a unified location where all forum visitors can look or ask if they are offering or seeking educational opportunities. Posts about classes in any other forums will be moved here or deleted from all other forums.
  21. Kothe Distilling Technologies Fall 2011 Workshop Koval Distillery in Chicago is proud to host Kothe Distilling Technologies' three-day fall workshop from October 14th to 16th. The course covers both basic and advanced distilling techniques and the legal and business aspects of starting a distillery. It is not only tailored to prospective distillers, but also is of great benefit to liquor industry professionals who want to improve their knowledge of the craft distilling movement, understand the process of distilling, and hone their skills in tasting distilled spirits. During the workshop, participants will learn the entire process of starting a distillery from fruit selection, mashing, distillation, and packaging, to the legal and business aspects relevant to North America, including the federal Tax and Trade Bureau, certification and label approvals, location requirements, and state regulations. Students will also receive hands-on distilling experience on a custom Kothe still at Koval Distillery. A sensory seminar during the workshop will teach various sensory aspects of different types of alcohol, including eaux de vie, vodkas, whiskeys, grappas and liqueurs. Participants will sample many different products and learn to identify positive as well as negative aspects of distillates. Hosts Robert Birnecker and Sonat Birnecker Hart, founders of the award-winning Koval Distillery and the manufacturer's representatives for Kothe in the United States, will be giving personal insights into the practice of distilling and starting a distillery, and other lecturers will speak on their areas of expertise. The workshop will take place from Friday, October 14, through Sunday, October 16, at Koval Distillery at 5121 N. Ravenswood Ave., in Chicago, Illinois. Cost is $799.
