  1. Does anyone have evidence what oxygenating vodka does during filtering? Is it a good idea to have some extra oxygen in the process when filtering through activated charcoal or is it a bad idea? Thanks!
  2. We are trying to create a traditional style of gin, in a compound style. We are very happy with our flavors and aromas but we have a whiskey-like color from the juniper/botanical extraction that we are having trouble removing. We have no louching occurring and our spirit is very clear after polishing. Carbon filtering is removing too much flavor, while still leaving some residual yellow color. My question is is there any way of removing the color from our spirit without completely removing all of the flavors? Is there a specific type of carbon that we should be using or another technique that works better? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  3. Looking for any helpful tips or DIY equipment to separate liquid from a corn & malt mash. We have been doing this by hand using filter bags at about 3 gallons at a time but this is very inefficient and doesn't always work when doing a 50 gallon wash. Saw that King's County uses a machine that does solid/liquid separation very well but it costs about $25K, so that's not going to happen. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.
  4. Hello fellow distillers, We have been told that our vodka should be at 40% abv before filtering with activated carbon. If we want to use our vodka to produce a gin, can we filter it at a higher abv? We were considering doing a gin run with 65% abv alcool to be more efficient. Can we filter a vodka at 65% abv? Thanks all
  5. Hi folks, I did search the forums for this, and found quite a bit of conversation about activated carbon, so my apologies if the answer is already in there and I just didn't find it... kindly point me to it. Otherwise, my question is about what kind of mileage we can expect per any certain volume of activated carbon. I know the rudimentary science behind activated carbon, and I know there is a tremendous variety of types, and results will vary by the amount of impurities in the spirit going through it... I also understand that its efficacy will decrease over a curve. But generally speaking, assuming professional quality stripped and fractioned vodka spirit, how many gallons (or liters, or whatever) can one expect to be effectively treated by say a cubic foot or so of granular, stone carbon? Just as a reference point. 10 gallons? 100 gallons? I know, there are lots of variables, but as a benchmark... is this number out there somewhere that came from someone's personal experience? These filters can go from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars... I'd really like to avoid over or under purchasing a system much as possible. Cheers, JP. Hammer Spring Distillers
  6. Anyone use plate and frame filters for their products? If so, any recommendations?

  8. Moved onto the details of our bottling line in the final stages of setting up. Through put is hopefully going to be in the region of 200 litres per week. Initially we're going to run an enolmatic single filler, drawing product from SS blending tanks via a single cartridge filter. Our water is RO treated. Interested to know what peoples views on the following. 1) polypropylene or stainless - what's the typical lifespan of both? 2) filter size (microns) - looking for a balance of polished spirit without knocking out flavour/aroma? 3) Has anyone used the enolmatic single filler standard version not (upspecced with SS parts option). is it still working? Thanks folks, feedback on your experience is as always, greatly appreciated.
  9. Hello All, We have recently started bottling our Grappa Brandy, it has been aging in barrels for two years and we are seeing some sediment in the bottle after it has been chilled. Does any one have any idea what this is and how we could remove it? We have been thinking about cold filtering the Grappa before bottling to see if that would help. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!
  10. Hello, I'm a newbie at spirits filtration and have a few questions regarding filtration in general and also what's the best method to filter a cloudy gin in particular. Will a plate-and-frame filter out too much aroma/flavor? I've heard some use the Noryl plastic plates, but others recommend only using stainless steel plates to filter. Stainless steel is much more expensive and I'm wondering if it's necessary? Is a cartridge filter better or does it accomplish different goals than a plate-and-frame? Finally, what filter pad and/or cartridge filter manufacturers and types do you recommend? Thanks for the help!
  11. I wanted to take a fresh look at an older thread (http://adiforums.com/index.php?showtopic=1072&hl=%2Bcarbon+%2Bfilter). Not sure if I posted it correctly. We are looking to make/purchase a unit for carbon filtering. I was curious if any of you had results from your research. I know Classick and JohninWV were looking into the Carbac filter sheets for simplicity. Has anyone else given them a try? Thanks, Todd
