  1. I have seen two designs on the return line from the column(s) (whisky column, vodka column or gin basket or quite commonly these drain into a common line) back to the pot. In one of the designs the return enters the pot above the liquid line in the vapor zone. I have heard by the people that promoted this design that it has to be that way or the still becomes vapor locked and floods if the return is under the liquid line and to never fill the still above the return line entrance point. On the other end I have heard that if the return line is above the liquid line vapor will enter the return line and "fight" the returning liquid. Interested in operating and engineering opinions, pros and cons with both designs.
  2. I recently came across TTB Tamer for distilleries. It is priced at $33/mo. I was wondering if anyone had experience with this system and could give a review. Thanks. http://www.ttbtamer.com/#pricing

  4. To Whom It May Concern: My name is Nate Thompson. I recently finished an MBA program at the University of Southern California. My long-term career goal is to open my own distillery. In the meantime, I am looking for an opportunity to work full-time as a production operator and work toward becoming an operations manager to further hone my skillset and continue my education in the industry. My experience in spirits to date includes a work-study exchange with Hakkaisan Sake Brewery in Niigata, Japan, where my team reviewed the company’s struggling U.S. strategy, ultimately encouraging them to break ties with their current distributor, target fine-dining on-premise accounts, and invest heavily in exporting their shochu portfolio. I then worked for Castle Brands in New York as a summer intern, ostensibly acting as the assistant brand manager for Knappogue Castle and Jefferson’s Bourbon. I primarily worked to create a long-term brand plan for Knappogue 1951, retarget on-premise accounts, establish a sales incentive program, and pitch unorthodox marketing events. Following graduation from USC, I spent several weeks as a production intern at Smooth Ambler Spirits and PA Pure Distilleries to compliment several years of experience as a hobbyist. I have also recently started taking courses in thermodynamics, microbiology, and process mecahnics. Coupled with my graduate coursework and experience as a data analyst, I can assist with everything from mash cooks to sales reporting. Please take a look at my resume attached, and feel free to reach me at the contact info below if you have any questions. I am temporarily living in Portland, Maine, but willing to relocate. Thank you very much for your time and consideration. Sincerely, Nate Thompson natekthompson@gmail.com M: (207) 669-2687 Thompson Resume 10-6-2017.docx
  5. I know most of us on here are probably too small to really worry about this, I'm attached to a brewery large enough that we are and I've been tasked with sorting out our non-production inventory. I've been cataloging everything we have and reading up on Maintenance, Repair, and Operations (the MRO in the title) inventory management but the examples aren't as helpful as I would like. I don't feel we're large enough to purchase a software suite to handle the thinking part, we're DEFINITELY not large or focused enough in our needs to have a vendor contract, and 'centrally located storage' is a funny way to put 'the back corner of the mezzanine'. Does anyone here have a manual spare parts management system they're happy with? How do you keep usage records straight with more than a few users? Did you manage to sell the idea to your whole staff, or does someone need to go through regularly and see what's missing? For a little leg up on people who (like me a month ago) haven't even heard of MRO, here are some articles I've found helpful. http://www.supplychain247.com/article/five_basic_practices_that_can_quickly_close_the_gap_with_mro_inventory/inventory https://www.idcon.com/resource-library/articles/best-practices/1059-storeroom-spare-parts-what-good-looks-like.html https://www.lce.com/Changing-the-Storeroom-Culture-to-Best-Practice-Performance-1292.html
