  1. Distilling newbie here, I believe I understand the difference between a thumper and doubler. Correct me if I'm wrong... The doubler basically reboils condensed low wines to make high wines. Thumper does not use condensed low wines, only low wine vapors to make high wines. I've seen continuous systems that allow for a doubler still to work as a thumper or a doubler by changing valve configurations. Why would you use one over the other? What affect does each one have on the high wine product? Looked online for an answer and didn't really see much. I know there's a lot of expertise on this website, so I thought I'd ask here. Cheers, Joey
  2. We are outgrowing our original potstill. This is a 120 gallon capacity potstill with thumper. It was custom manufactured for us in 2014 using a Groen steam kettle as the foundation. In the top of the still head is a basket where copper mesh can be placed if desired, or potentially gin botanicals. The thumper can be bypassed for straight potstill runs. Two efficient stainless condensers knock down vapors using well water. Kettle is rated for high pressure steam, but we ran it with 15 psi low pressure steam. Two 300L receiver tanks collect heads, hearts or tails as desired. 1.5" TC connections. Skid mounted, measures 4'w x 8' l x 11' h. Asking $6500 FOB. Still is located in Pittsboro NC 27312.
  3. Running a 120 gallon SS pot still with a 20 gallon copper thumper. I usually charge the thumper with around 6-7 gallons of tails and 100 gallons in the pot. With the four 5500 watt elements running full tilt, it takes about 2 1/2 - 3 hrs (depending on ABV% of tails in the thumper) to get the thumper up to temp. I am not new to distilling, however I am new to thump keg science/art... My question... How do I speed up heat up time? Or, do I even want to speed up heat up time? I've insulated the TK, put a hot plate under it to pre-heat, even pulled out my heat gun one time to help pre-heat. I'm now thinking about installing a 4500w element directly into the thumper. My partner, who is relatively new to distilling, suggested starting a run on an empty thump keg. My gut tells me that running an empty thumper would sort of defeat the purpose of the thump keg all together, but I'm in need of some more thorough advice and thought I would consult the experts here. Thanks in advance for any help or guidance! - Perry Morris http://www.southerngracedistilleries.com/
  4. Got some good work done on the thumper today. Barrel is 32oz or 19g, top is hand formed with a lip that captures the barrel. Flange is stainless with copper attached. It will be riveted to the top cone or cape once the tubing is inserted through the side. Still have to make the bottom and roll some beads into the sides of the barrel for rigidity. Moving right along!
  5. Been busily working on this big danged still. I thought I'd share a few more pics of our most recent progress. Let me know what you all think. I hope to make this into a living and be able to phase out the copper lighting someday. Hit me up if you're interested in discussing a custom handmade copper still or copper components for your still project! Thanks for looking: Looking down into the water bath thumper head. I will be rolling the top edge and capturing a copper wire in it for strength. Top of the still body getting welded together. Thumper neck in progress. This is the manifold inside the thumper.
