License to Swill: D.C.’s Unique Booze Laws Allow a Way Around the Middleman. Guess Who Isn’t Happy?

One thing the (very good) article doesn't mention is that many DC licensed wholesalers are actually MD/VA wholesalers. The Bud Light trucks roll in with Maryland plates.

"Anywhere else in the country, that would be illegal; all alcohol purchases in the 50 states must be made through state-licensed wholesalers. "

He also isn't correct in that several states including Missouri allow selling at all three tiers; retail, wholesale, distribution by the distillery without any middleman. The bar owner in the article could go direct to an in-state distillery and buy his booze if he were in MO. and the distillery had the right state license.
