  6. My reply wasn't meant to be a big discussion on music licensing. As a business owner, we each need to decide whats worth the risk or not. ASCAP and BMI will send you threatening letters and if you are in an urban area they have reps with territories, and eventually, one of them will come in and write a little report and send you a letter.
  7. My tasting room was tiny....if you play music in a place of business where customers can hear it, you have to pay: https://www.bmi.com/licensing/#faqs
  8. There are all kinds of little costs that eat up your profit. I had someone from the Dept of Agriculture stroll in my distillery one day, the end result was that I needed to have a license from them, even though we didn't produce a food product, and I would never see them again. The license is $380 a year and they do not prorate, so I have to pay $380 in March and $380 again in June. Sure that's only $380 a year but the little things add up. Play music in your tasting room? Someone from BMI or the other artist rep companies will eventually come in a demand a license. Luckily thru DMX you can license for all three agencies for $25 a month, instead of the $25 per license per company that they will try to stick you with. The list goes on and on.

  13. Hey, everyone! Just thought I would chime in and say hello. I founded Eastside Distilling here in Portland in 2008. Was the CEO and created all the brands and marketing until October 2014 when I sold the company. I stayed active and on the board until October 2016 and now work as a private consultant, writer, and spirits educator. Just posted some insight in the tasting room section and hope to share whatever I can to help the craft industry succeed. The 2018 ADI conference is here in Portland, so I hope to meet some of you in person!
  14. We used Groupon for the bulk tasting campaign and for Living Social we used that platform to book private parties. Here is another tip, the more expensive your Groupon, the bigger the perceived value and the more you will sell. We bundled a premium tasting for two with locally made chocolates made with our spirits, a premium cocktail, and a short tour for $60 retail, $30 on Groupon. The higher the "perceived" value the more you will sell, a lot more.
  15. https://www.amazon.com/Costway-Portable-Compact-Electric-Machine/dp/B0728GBDF2/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1504106547&sr=8-13&keywords=portable+ice+maker Our tasting room was fairly small, but this little machine could keep up pretty well. When we got super busy we eventually had to get ice bags out of the freezer, and we had an ice maker in the freezer. The upside to this machine is that it fits behind the bar.
