  1. Does anybody happen to know the viscosity of bourbon mash? Trying to get a heat exchanger sized. Anybody have any knowledge on this it would be greatly appreciated. Thank You
  2. I am talking about stillage. Need the number due to some regulatory issues.
  3. Anybody come across numbers as to the BOD content of whiskey wastewater? As well as any information on evaporation ponds, aeration, and biological organisms to expedite the breakdown process would be greatly appreciated.

    Rum Setback

For those of you that are making rum from molasses, what are you doing with the setback? I have heard several options, but sans just dumping it down the drain and using a portion for souring I would like to know if it can be utilized in any other way. Thank you.

  8. Anybody know how to remove scorched molasses from the bottom of a boiler? I have no direct access to the bottom of the boiler so using steel wool or elbow grease is out of the question.
  9. I know this topic is quite old but PM if you still need this info. There are smaller dists in Texas.
  10. If I am running an air powered diaphragm pump for mash transfers and the manufacturer of the pump states that I'll need 150 CFM at maximum PSI, but when I talk to an air compressor sales guy he suggests I buy a 50 HP AC that is the size of a truck and costs about the same. I know there are members out there that are using the same type of pump, 2 inch outlet/inlet, for mash transfers and if at all possible could you let me know what size of air compressor you are using? A simple HP rating would be fine. Thank you very much for your help.
  11. Anybody out there know how efficient it would be to use the steam from a boiler through a heat exchanger for heating mash water rather than using a HLT? Thank You
  12. McMaster-Carr has shell in tube heat exchangers.
  13. I am going with Triad Boilers out of West Chicago, Illinois. I have been talking to boiler companies for months and Triad was understanding as to what was needed for my operation. Most boiler companies do not understand the needs of a distillery, they will give you a system that is more suited for a large building, or industrial application. Triad is also the manufacture so you will save 20-30%. I am looking at less than 75k for 5 million btu, LP.
  14. Greetings. Amy body out there know of a means to etch/burn/engrave the head of a barrel? Companies that provide such equipment would be appreciated. Thank you.
  15. Shipping is also a factor to consider when looking at suppliers.
  16. Malthandling.com. I just spent over an hour on the phone with Rusty Reilly on equipment to take grain from grain trailer/grain bins - to silo - to mill - (weighed properly) - to mash tun. All of this done by flexible augers, hoppers, and automatic flow scales, etc. I have looked for months for turnkey grain handling equipment and they have everything that you could possibly need.
  17. I am currently in talks with suppliers for boilers for my operation, 6 million BTU, I would highly suggest that you get many proposals. I have been given estimates ranging from 20k-95k. Research boilers as much as possible, does your estimate include installation?, feed water system?, will you meet building/fire code?, exhaust system?, etc.
  18. Thank you very much for the feedback. I am looking for a traditional bourbon flavor profile.
  19. I have had several conversations with craft whiskey distillers, sifted through many forums, and have researched till no end....if producing Bourbon using the batch method how vital/important is it to distill on grain? I have been given polar opposite opinions from distillers, the research I have done in manuals is often ambiguous, and my level of frustration is growing to no end. Any help from would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
  20. Delos vodka in Lewisville Texas is using vacuum stills.
  21. I do not have a lauter tun. Due to production levels and efficiency of production/labor/energy I will be separating before distilling and need to do this in a timely manner. I have reached out to an engineering firm that works with food production. I will post models and any other info when I receive it.
  22. No worries on questions, I apologize if I was not making my needs clear. I will be fermenting on grain, BUT I do not want to distill on grain. I will not be using a lauter tun. So I guess a centrifuge is what I am looking to size. I have seen other liquid solid separators being used, mainly a screw type, or a models like a Russell Finex LSS. The price range is wide for most of these models. Do you use a liquid solid separator?
  23. Roughly 15%, will be fermenting on grain. Will be separating after fermentation before stripping run.
  24. I am trying to find a supplier for a mash separator. After spending most of the weekend on the internet running in circles I have spoken to a few salesman at some of the manufacturers and the first question they asked was "what is the load?" - or thickness of the liquid (grain on whiskey mash) to be separated. Anybody have any figures for this? Anybody already using a separator that they could share info on? I'll be running 10-20k gallons a week through this thing so the spin cycle on a used washing machine is not an option. Thank you, Curtis
