  1. Hello all- I was wondering if anyone started extremely small as a means to bring in investors? Recently we were on track to start a good sized distillery, by that I mean using a 150gallom still, but unfortunately some funding I was counting on fell through at pretty much the last minute despite a solid business plan. I have been working with a business mentor at my local small business office and he suggested starting with something that I would consider an experimental sized still, 10 to 15 gallons. Once I have a product and I have made a few sales then shop around to investors as an operational dsp. Has anyone done this? It's a complete 180 from the business plan that I spent the last year working on so I wanted to get some industry feedback on the viability of the idea. Any info is greatly appreciated. Also I am located in virginia which as many of you know is a control state that has it's own issues in terms of production requirements. Thanks

  4. Check out catoctin creek distillery in purceville, va. They are certified organic and kosher, if I recall they have been operating that way since about 2008 or 2009.
  5. If the spent grains/berries etc were donated to a local non-profit organization, say a garden collective; could this be considered a tax write off for the business? What your thoughts? I have seen something similar on another post but for the life of me I could not find it. Thanks
  6. Helo Everyone- I hae no doubt that this figure will vary greatly and depend on many different factors. We are setting up shop outside of the DC area and was wondering what sort of growth rates people have experienced being close to a large metroploitan area. I'm asking because I'm trying to determine my initial production levels. I was also wondering what production percentage people started at? Or did most of you just go right in at 5 days a week running th still. I'm planning on a running a 150gallon still at least 2 to 3 days per week. Thanks.
  7. Hey All- So we are finally purchasing equipment. My question is this, how many fermenters are needed in any given operation? Due to budget we are starting with with a 250 liter still (66gl), but if all goes according to the business plan this will only be for the first 18 months. Because we have multiple partners running the still 5-6 days per week at this point is not a foreseeable problem. Am I correct in assuming that with a setup like this we will need at least three individual fermenters of about equal capacity to the charge of the still? I really would like to hear what has worked for people. Thanks Travelers.
  8. Good to know, thank you for the feedback.
  9. Hi Guys- I have a great location with plenty of foot traffic right on a lake front. The only problem is that its only 400 sgft. Does any body think this is even worth going after? I do plan on aging, but I will rent a warehouse for that. Thanks
  10. I was wondering if anybody has sold their spent grains/botanicals/berries to earn additional income? or is this always a give-a-way product? thanks.
  11. dhdunbar- Thank you very much this information, I conducted a similar search however I must have missed the newsletter you mentioned.
  12. Coop- Thanks for your post and best of luck with your venture. It looks like you guys have a great idea.
  13. Has any body tried crowd-funding for their startups? If so was it reasonably successful or a complete flop? Thanks.
  14. Hello Everyone- I'm doing research on business avenues, we have a great space already locked down. It features lake front property with heavy foot traffic. I'm trying to understand the tied-house laws. Is it possible? I have only found one distillery on the web that is setup that way. Our goal is to have the operations facility attached to a tasting room that is setup similar to a winery. Where people are able to come in, taste our spirits, and stay for drink if they like. I have been reading the regulations, but I will be honest, I just don't can' really get a handle on them. Any advice would be helpful. Thank you.
