  1. TL;DR: I'm in the beginning throws of creating a business plan. What part of your business plan did you struggle with the most and how did (or didn't) you overcome it? After enough research, I've come to terms that I won't be a distillery owner for at least 18 months, if not longer. I still need money coming in. I need to save. I need to figure out what the f$%* I'm doing. So here we are, at the beginning. I'm locked in with a blank document and in a staring contest its title; Business Plan. Sort of. I've broke it down into four major themes I need to flesh out: Production/Operations Marketing/Sales Financial Legal My plan is to start one page vision of the distillery/product (to get my head straight) and then go after legal (local zoning board/politicians) and marketing (distillers, retailers, bars and potential customers). I'll see what the reaction is to my vision and tweak as I go. Why this approach? Because talking doesn't cost money. Truth be told though, I'll be winging it for a while. So I'm wondering if anyone has comments or critiques to this approach? And maybe you'd like to shed some light on the areas you struggled with regarding your own business plan in the beginning.
  2. Hello, My business partner and I are finishing up the financials for our business plan for opening up a small batch distillery. Our location and marketing plan call for a tasting room, distillery tours and merchandise available for sale at our facility. We have had great success modeling product sales and expenses from contacts within the ADI, but have not run into any examples of projections of revenue for merchandise and other non-product related sales. I was hoping someone would be able to share their experiences or recommend a good resource to indicate merchandise/tour sales. Any amount of information from the annual number of visitors to sales numbers or even items that you found to be very popular. Thank you all for your help!

  4. Hello, y'all I'm going for it, and I need y'all to try to talk me out of it. Just kidding, sort of. I've been putting together a business plan (which for me consists of staring at a computer screen for and hour and then typing one sentence) to start an artisan distillery. I am currently in the throws of making some big decisions regarding the operation, and this forum is priceless for helping me put these decisions into perspective. My first thought, being a novice business owner with little capital to invest, was to start as small as possible. I originally wanted to rent a small warehouse and produce 3 to 4 really good, simple products. Then I get on this site and read all the kudos for tasting rooms and now I'm rethinking everything. I then had the idea that, if I opened an establishment that served local spirits (I live in Colorado, and would feature all-Colorado beverages) I might be able to turn a profit while I waited for the TTB, etc. Then I thought "ow". My brain started to hurt from all of the conflicting calculations and permutations of visions. So now I'm back to the simple warehouse o' liquor idea. Thing is, I also think I eventually want a tasting room of some sort. I'm a musician (banjo, fiddle, and guitar player..and I'm missing a few teeth...kind of makes me a natural for this business, I think) and I plan to incorporate music into most every aspect of my business, from marketing to having dag-gum square dances in the tasting room (when I get one). So all of this comes in to the mix. Brain dump done. So I'm feeling kind of stuck right now. I'm thinking that my next step is to hire a mentor/advisor from one of the many who have posted here. I welcome any and all advice y'all have regarding...well....anything to do with opening a craft distillery. Mostly I need the warnings, which is what I meant by y'all talking me out of it. As many heads up of dangers as you can give me, I'd appreciate. Also, if folks here could recommend a good consultant to hire, that would probably be the thing I need to get my direction back. (Professional consultants don't go recommending yourself, now...I wanna hear it from those who have used your services). Thanks in advance for all future advice and thanks in retrospect for all the info I've already gotten.

After digging into many posts related to start ups, production, volume, sales, etc., I cannot locate any data - anecdotal OK - related to the amount of production / distribution (whether self or through distributor) / tasting room sales, etc. that a start up distillery had in Y1 and a comparison of same to Y2 or Y3. I'm not talking revenue - just cases (or bottles/barrels put up if applicable). I'm close to receiving approval on a loan for a small downtown (town=6000 people) Main Street location distillery and tasting room in (touristy) CO. I plan to produce vodka and two liqueurs and have estimated production at 800 cases of vodka per year (12-750ml) and 600 cases of liqueur (calculated on 12-750ml). My biz plan assumes 50 cases of each sold from the tasting room and the remainder sold thru distribution networks (including utilizing strong regional contacts in the restaurant/bar/retail/hotel industries). I also have a network of contacts in key cities in the US but am still trying to understand how I will utilize them in connection with a distributor or broker. Would anyone be willing to comment on their own personal experience from start up thru Y1 or Y2 or Y3 related to what was produced / distributed / sold and how. Alternatively, if there is data of this nature available "to the public", I would relay the location to my banker, who is having difficulty locating statistics of this nature. I know I've got a long way to go, and much to figure out but no need to continue if the bank says "no". Thanks for any input/direction to keep looking - as simple as Case #s produced/distributed. CB
