Hey there, Y'all.

Quick and dirty question - on a percentage basis, how much usable spirit will result based upon how much mash goes in the still?

Meaning - if one uses a 100liter still with the assumption of 100 liters of mash - how many liters will result of a first-run batch?

Thanks in advance - I was just have a discussion about this, and I was not able to find this answer very easily.

Thanks again.

Andrew

Hey Andrew,

Hard question to answer as there are a lot of variables.

But let's say your 100 liters of mash is 10% abv. In theory, you should be able to extract 10 liters of 95% pure alcohol. In practice it's probably more like 7-8 liters, and that's only for the first stripping run. Re-distill again, and the 70-80% yield rule is probably accurate. So for let's say a whiskey, 100 liters stripped is probably 21-24 liters +/- at 30% avb. Redistilled that becomes 15-18 liters at 60% abv., assuming you have a fairly efficient still. Distill again and the end yield decreases.

Again, rough numbers only.

Here in Colorado we use a mash from three different kinds of grain. according to the numbers assigned to each type of grain the most we could expect is about 7% abv. We have a 300L still but I work in gallons as federal taxes are in proof gallons. So we put in about 80 gallons in our still and we cut off tails at 35% abv. On the stripping run we are getting out about 5.5 to 6 gallons of alcohol. We save this untill we have about 70 gallons then re-distill to about 95% to 96% abv. Out of the 70 gallons we get around 44 gallons at 95% to 96% abv. Hope this helps. Coop
