Facebook Fan Pages

Who else is using Facebook to promote their brand?

Post the address to your Facebook fan page here for your brand. I'll add your link to my fan page and I hope you add mine to yours. There is strength in numbers and our numbers are growing.

Visit my fan page at http://www.facebook.com/twenty2vodka . Ours has evolved into a dynamic tool of over 1450 fans. We've had some great success giving away t shirts and we post a new cocktail recipe every Friday at 3PM called "the 3:00 Cocktail".

Looking forward to connecting with others on FB.

thanks!

I agree with the importance of usernames/vanity IDs for an effective Facebook fan page. We've begun posting our FB address on most anything we print or handout including our business cards. Having an address that is "slash-something" makes it easy to tell people how to get to your page directly without counting on them to search and look and hopefully find you. Asking "Are you guys on facebook?" is also usually a question that results in "yea!" and a good ice breaker to start a conversation about your brand and products.

I've learned a couple things about effective facebook techniques over the past months, and one important technique is simplicity when asking/expecting/needing participation from the fans. Participation includes finding your fan page in the first place, and a username is definitely a first step. Another example, we've done a couple contests where fans can enter to win a tshirt by liking and or commenting on the post. If the fan likes and comments they are entered twice for the drawing. Liking requires clicking. Commenting requires clicking, and typing anything, then clicking again. Likes usually out number comments by 2 to 1, sometimes more.

Here's facebook's guide on how to create a username for your fan page. http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=91106469821

All good stuff what Scott just said.

We also found that you have to be fairly consistent with updates to keep people's interest. I call it "feeding the monster". You have to keep putting interesting and diverse posts up on FB almost daily to grow an interest. There is a fine line between posting enough and too much. I have seen a few unsubscribes which is probably people saying, "enough already." But my subscribes outnumber my unsubscribes over ten to one.

How do you facebookers compare its effectiveness to that of your website?

I'm trying to decide whether to spend several thousand on a fine website or instead going with a simpler, cheaper site and relying more on facebook for promotion.

In terms of functionality, you can do more "things" with a straight up website than you can with facebook. You have total access over layout, design, features, and content with a standard dot-com than you do with a facebook fan page.

But Facebook offers traffic. Actual honest to goodness daily unique users who will likely find you because someone else found you through someone else they know. There have been times where i wished i could modify the standard FB Fan page layout...there are things like location information and the "info" tab that you cannot modify. With that said, the opportunity facebook offers any user without requiring a lick of HTML or PHP or other basic coding knowledge, coupled with the pure traffic, cannot be denied.

I like to compare FB to a town plaza where there is unlimited elbow room for vendors to setup display of their goods, and (more importantly) where everyone is already hanging out anyway. If you set up shop outside the limits of the plaza, you may have more design-freedom, but more than likely at the expense of less visitors to your cart. In my opinion, i'd take the extra traffic in a heartbeat.

I'd be interested to know more how Scott Harris of Catoctin Creek Distilling Co feels on this issue. His website http://catoctincreek.com/ is wayyy more developed than mine is, or will be, until i get to the point where i am forced to just outsource the whole deal.

Also, http://www.opensourcecms.com offers a handy middle ground to get you a website with web 2.0 features without having an associates degree in programming (CMS stands for content management system). if you know basic HTML, understand the concept of JAVA, PHP, and SQL, and have ever mucked around in the back end of your website, you'll likely find a free option there that will generate a dot-com presence outside of FB with little time commitment. We use joomla for ours (http://www.twenty2vodka.com) however i have to admit i've let my dot-com presence slip recently in favor for putting some real time into growing my facebook presence.

Since i started this thread in March, we've added over 1,000 fans to our FB page.

For those of you that are interested in the Facebook topic, check out this site (I have no affiliation with them):

www.businesstrainingteam.com

I think I found them through either SCORE or SBDC. They offer free webinars every Tuesday. I have not been able to catch any of them, unfortunately, but they offer them as free courses on their website as well. The latest one was "Make Facebook Pages Work." It lasts about 50 minutes. Don't know how it is, haven't watched it yet. They tend to be Powerpoints with a commentator.

Like I said, they are free and occasionally they have some that I would like to watch when I get some free time. They just require that you register on their site. So far, I haven't gotten anything from signing up other than reminders for the webinars.

Social media can get super overwhelming fast...especially when you likely got into this to make amazing products, not be marketers!  So I just wanted to offer up that we do social media audits and consulting exclusively for craft alcohol producers to help you design a social media process that works best for your brand and resources. We've set up past clients on scheduling tools and provided in depth trainings on things like using hashtags and other ways to grow your accounts and their effectiveness while greatly minimizing your time spent on social. As a brand with almost 10k craft alcohol enthusiast followers across platforms we can also be leveraged as an influencer for your brand if that's the approach your more interested in taking. Either way, our whole mission is to help craft distillers be successful and grow so we're always happy to talk and help support you in this crazy social media (or video or articles!) world.
