  1. Now I'm confused. As a distiller, I only know of two kinds of space associated with my distillery- Bonded and General. Are you saying the space can't be associated with the distillery at all?! We have a distillery, expanded to add a tasting room and my understanding is it is considered General premises, and all approved by the TTB. In fact by state laws I cannot have a tasting room that isn't at the distillery. Is there some 3rd class of distillery space I'm not aware of?
  2. Some additional info including location and hotel for the 2013 conference in Denver have now been posted at http://distilling.com/
  3. I think you put too much stock in still manufacture. It's really quite simple, it's a vessel to boil alcohol off a mash. If well designed there is no reason to believe it wouldn't be able to create award winning spirits. We distill "award winning" spirits on our Holstein but I have no doubt we could do it on one of the Chinese stills too. As for why there is an influx, check with the German companies you mentioned- last I heard they are quoting 8 months plus lead times to get their equipment...
  4. I think that would be up to your local authorities. I don't think the TTB really cares where your tasting room is as long as it's separated from the bonded area. We have a patio off our Tasting Room and as long as we're not on public area (sidewalk) the city doesn't seem concerned.
  5. You need to get set up as an alcohol shipper through Fedex or UPS. We're set up through Fedex, UPS had a daily pickup requirement we couldn't meet. They require and supply an additional sticker for the box- must be 21, signature required....
  6. If you're making a mash yes. If you're making a spirit flavored with various botanicals- no.

  9. Given all the calculation questions that pop up, I thought it might be of interest to our members that AlcoDens has a discount offer going through the end of the month. It's good software and they've recently released a new version- 2.3 and I would like members here know there is a 25% discount off the regular price... AlcoDens consists of the following 5 specialist calculators: 1. Hydrometer Correction Calculator. Correct the apparent strength to true strength for any calibration temperature, any sample temperature and any standard temperature. You can use a Proof, ABV or SG hydrometer and get your result in all 3 options. 2. Blending Calculator. Perform rigorous blending calculations taking the ethanol-water mixing shrinkage into account. You can work in mass or volume terms, and you can express the strengths in ABV, Proof, Mass% or density. It automatically corrects volumes for temperature where applicable. 3. Volume Correction Calculator. Correct your inventory volume for temperature and determine the alcohol content in mass, volume or Proof gallon terms. 4. Strength and Density Conversions. This utility program will convert between any two of Mass% (Weight%), Volume% (ABV), Proof, Molar% and Density - taking temperature into account where applicable. 5. Freezing Point Calculator. Calculate the freezing point of a blend from its strength, or vice versa. You can download the free, fully functional trial version and use it for 15 days to test it for yourself. Please visit the AlcoDens web page at http://www.katmarsof...om/alcodens.htm to see examples of the calculators in action, and to download your free trial. The launch discount of 25% brings the regular price of US$ 195.00 down to US$ 146.25, and is valid until the end of September 2012. When you go online to order you will see at the very bottom of the order page (below where you enter your payment method) a field for the Coupon Code. Enter the code JXY33 (all uppercase, no spaces) and when you advance to the next page the price will have changed.
  10. Only the location and dates have been announced at this point.
  11. Several comments got severely off topic and I did some pruning. Lets keep it professional and avoid the insults please.
  12. We created our own excel spreadsheets. There is a thread about distillery solutions here- http://adiforums.com/index.php?showtopic=1450&pid=15441&st=0entry15441 but it doesn't seem like a lot of feedback from those who use it. Maybe contact Distillery Solutions directly for some customer referrals?
  13. Congratulations from a fellow Wisconsinite. I knew someone in WI would eventually do a potato vodka!
  14. Very reasonable, although I have nothing to do with the newsletter. Drop Bill an email...
  15. July 24th is the most recent date I received one. If you didn't receive it there is a signup box here-http://distilling.com/ Most recent newsletter as of 8/11/2012 - http://tinyurl.com/9s3gylr
  16. Eric, We put all our energy into our local market for the first 5 years- built a strong local business (put a tasting room in too). I couldn't imagine doing it any other way unless you're just making one product or have REALLY deep pockets. The variety you're talking about will not cannibalize sales, some like Whiskey some like Gin some like Vodka- most don't cross over from what they like. Discuss your concept with local retailers and bars that fit in with what you think will be your customer base. We grew 30-40% annually our first 3 years and about 20% since in our local market. I have to disagree with Curtis, for the variety of products you're planning to produce a hybrid is the way to go. We have used one since day one and NEVER regretted it. (Curtis, curious to what your objections might be?). Don't buy too much equipment, you can always add and you're going to need cash after you open. Good luck!
  17. There was an excellent discussion of this at the last ADI conference, view the "2011 and beyond" powerpoint here- http://distilling.com/conference.html
  18. Bill Owens regularly publishes an ADI email newsletter. If you're not getting it email him your address at; bill(at)distilling(dot)com
  19. A friend who has been running successful wine events in San Francisco (the SF Vintners Market) has decided to do a spirits event for small producers this fall in San Francisco. What makes this event truly unique is that it is a selling event! 20. Rickdiculous, I think your first and last links are not what you intended?

  22. Ralph, just curious, did DISCUS take a stand on this issue either way?

  24. Scott, I think it's a screwy setting in their domain forwarding or the server itself. Since they don't actually have any content at this point it wouldn't really be a concern to ADI as it just links to the ADI sites (no, ADI is not getting any revenue from that site). If material were taken and reposted then we'd have another story. Agree on the term Microshiners or even moonshiner for that matter. While there are many who have built that connection into their business plan for some folksy marketing reason, most of us have not. Not to mention we pay taxes which means we really don't fit the true definition anyway. I would suggest that if you get a solicitation from them to advertise you explain that in your response. Guy
  25. I never got the powerpoint. Don't know if it's still available. I would call Richard Wolf- his number is in the original post.
