  1. hello everyone...I'm Curtis Patience. Originally from Hayward, California but am now in Portland, Oregon going on 8 years now. I'm a professional Metalsmith that has been primarily working with exotic automobiles. I specialise in the non-ferrous metals. A few years ago I was hired to take care of the copper kettles and stills at Anchor Brewery in SF, and so I head south 3-4 times a year. It's through this connection i've been becoming a distiller and doing things for distilleries in the Portland area and playing with my school in the shop. Nice to be a part of the group here and I hope I can be of some help if anyone has questions about the metals involved in the craft. Two sites: www.juicebrakes.com www.cityofportlandcopperworks.com cheers all and happy new year... cp
  2. There is a business here that will dip rusty steel into and a solution that consumes the rust and leaves a clean surface. In Portland they are called American Metal Cleaning. They may tell you what their solution is if it's not proprietary. (though it probably is) Or you can send it to them I imagine. An old Ducati tank was $68. I've had them clean things that were heavily rusted and came back with no rust. As far as I can tell it eats only the rust and doesn't etch the steel. I agree that you don't want to spread the existing rust around and need something that will lift the rust away. good luck cp
  3. hey guys...thanks for the replies...I'm imagining it's a process. It is totally illegal to distill for consumption in this country, they make this very clear in the Regulation. I want to give it go though...time passes...might as well be distilling... cheers curtis
  4. hello everyone from Portland Oregon... My name is Curtis Patience and i'm happy to be on board. I've been enjoying the spirits here and look forward to Toast coming up in a couple weeks. I am a master craftsman in metals and some wood. Mainly I work with exotic automobiles but i've been looking into scratching that old itch of distilling and am looking to taking the steps to do so legitimately. My question is about a full blown license or the experimental permit. For the first year at least I plan on working up some recipes that I like, and can duplicate. I will register my still as part of the process but I'm unclear as to which permit to apply for. The bond is the same for both I imagine. I've emailed the TTB but have not heard back in a week or so. Anyway...nice to be here...and hope to have some fun and share some good times... curtis patience www.juicebrakes.com
