South Puget Sound Community College (SPSCC) seeks a highly motivated and qualified individual for the position of Assistant Director of Craft Brewing and Distilling - Lead Distiller.
 
The Assistant Director-Lead Distiller of the SPSCC Craft Brewing and Distilling Program reports to the Dean of Applied Technology and assists with the coordination, planning, and support of the program in its goal to offer high-quality and comprehensive education and training in craft brewing, cider making, and distilling. The program provides educational enrichment opportunities for students through exposure to, and involvement in, an array of diverse experiences, including commercial equipment training, spirit flavor and recipe development and  production, internships, site visits, workshops, conferences, community collaborations, and guest speaker events.
 
The Assistant Director-Lead Distiller should be familiar with, or able to become familiar within three months, relevant federal and state regulations, college policy, and available funding options related to craft beverage recipe development and production.
 
This position requires a flexible work schedule, including availability for evenings and weekends. Many activities are performed independently and with minimal supervision. The Assistant Director-Lead Distiller will work in close concert with the Assistant Director-Lead Brewer, the Director of Business (for Percival Creek), and the Lab Manager-Lead Chemist (for Tumwater Falls Laboratory). The Assistant Director-Lead Distiller may be assigned additional tasks by  the Dean of Applied Technology in matters where procedures and policies are not well known or established.

What You'll Do

Technical Production Coordination

  • Leads recipe and flavor development, and production of, spirits for Percival Creek Distilling products in close coordination with the Director of Business (Percival Creek) Notes: this may encompass 50% or more of the position’s work; all recipes and flavors developed for the program are owned by the program
  • Leads quality testing, production, and packaging operations for Percival Creek Distilling -- manages production schedule to achieve commercial goals
  • Assists Assistant Director-Lead Brewer, as needed, with quality testing, production, and packaging operations for other Percival Creek commercial products, such as ciders and beers
  • Under the direction of the Dean and Business Director, in collaboration with the Assistant Director-Lead Brewer, coordinates scheduled production runs for all Percival Creek Brands
  • Works with the Business Director to maintain regulatory compliance related to the Craft Brewing and Distilling Program and Percival Creek LLCs with regulatory/licensing agencies including TTB, FDA, LCB, DOH, DOR, and with the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges
  • Directs and assists technician(s) and/or student intern(s) in the preparation and breakdown of production floor sessions which includes managing inventory related to beverage production and instruction, and placing orders to replenish stock, materials, and supplies as needed   
 
Instructional Support and Lab Coordination
  • Supervises safe student activity in the laboratories and the production floor during all in-person weekends in coordination with the Assistant Director-Lead Brewer and relevant staff and instructors
  • Works directly with faculty to prepare, modify, and develop instructional resources to support hands-on laboratory style curriculum
  • Integrates industry standards into instructional environments and supports student learning in classroom and lab settings
  • Assists the Craft Brewing and Distilling team in providing off-site industry tours for students learning based on course curriculum needs and schedules
  • The Assistant Director-Lead Distiller assists the Craft Brewing and Distilling (CBD) faculty lead with student outreach and communication and will assist in instructional program recruitment efforts in coordination with other CBD and college staff
  • In consultation with the CBD faculty lead, the Assistant Director-Lead Brewer, and the Program Manager, the Assistant Director-Lead Distiller helps coordinate course-work and annual schedules to ensure that facilities and supplies are available for program coursework
  • Upon direction of the dean, the Assistant Director-Lead Distiller will assist in hosting SPSCC Instructional and/or Percival Creek LLC events that: 1) support the industry needs for a trained and experienced workforce and 2) build awareness and enrollment in the instructional program. This staff member will need to secure a MAST (Mandatory Alcohol Server Training) permit within the first three months of employment.  

 

Qualifications You Possess

 

  • Bachelor’s degree and experience working in distilling beverage industry. Five years of experience in the industry may be in place of a bachelor’s degree
  • Experience in production, process engineering, and/or packaging
  • Actively contributes to a work environment that embraces diversity and inclusion and uses numerous strategies to enhance the attainment of organizational goals
  • Demonstrated experience with the business, science, history, process, or culture of food and beverage fermentation.
  • Excellent communication skills, the ability to work well with others, and function as a team member
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in evaluating situations, solving problems and making decisions
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to work independently and prioritize multiple tasks, and accommodate numerous interruptions
  • Use of computers and software applications, specifically MS Office suite: Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends

It's hilarious that this post gives the bait "if you mention attachments in your cover letter, we won't consider your application," but then does not provide any avenue to provide said materials.
