30 gal barrel aging

Howdy all,

Curious if anyone here has aged a 30 gal barrel to 4 years and was it over oaked? I know there are a lot of variables here but what's the rule of thumb age range on a 30 gal? Is it 2-4 years, 3-6, etc?

I haven't encountered any extended aging in smaller barrels without significantly dropping the entry proof. Most places aging in smaller barrels are doing very short intervals on the initial uses of those barrels.

Most run into "over-oaked" barrels around 2 years or sooner.

What's significant? sub 50%?

I've found that 36 days per vessel gallon is to my taste and after that it's overoaked.  No coming back from that. So for a 5-gallon - 6 months, a 15-gallon - 18 months, and 30-gallon - 36 months (using 30 days as average month length). These are maximums in my view.   Of course every barrel is different, but these are useful guidelines.
