Hey therte

Recommended Posts

Just joined today though have perused the site before. Currently I drive horses for a living in the states, though for about a third of the year I work in Northern Uganda teaching creative writing to former child soldiers. While abroad recently, I had a very clear dream about distilling whiskey and have been researching ever since. I've bought two of Mr. Owens' books and one of Michael Jackson's and am doing my best to learn as much as possible. I feel strongly that I am on to something here (with distilling) that is both fascinating and could lead to a lifetime of hard work and an ever-growing passion for crafting a superior product. At 31 years old I feel that I am at a pivotal moment in my life where if I can go about this prospective endeavor properly, something great could be born. Any advice would be more than welcome. I am also considering saving some money this summer to enable me to visit several distilleries and hopefully learn from some of the masters. Is such a trip possible? Any advice on certain distillers that might be good to contact? I am willing and able to put in my share of work in order to learn. It's wonderful to have a forum of informed individuals to turn to with questions. Have a great day, Kristoff

Kristoff, first of all the work that you are doing with the child soldiers is hard for me to imagine. I can try but.....wow! As for the rest of your email, I could have written it. I'm 32 and I have the exact same attitude. It's a hunger for learning and reading the books falls short. Ask around, use the distillery map at the sister site to see who is in your neck of the woods. Where are you located? If nothing else, look for local brewers that will show you the ropes. If you can get a handle on making beer I figure you are 1/3 the way there. Then you just need to figure out how to reduce it down and then to sell it.

The best of luck and I hope we cross paths,

Jason

Hi Kirstoff,

If you're ever in Virginia, swing by. We'd be happy to show you around and teach you what we know.

Scott

Hey Scott,

Thank-you for the quick response and the great opportunity. Actually much of my family lives in Arlington, Virginia so I will definitly be in the area. Are there better times of the year or season for you and your family so that I could learn and be of help and not in the way? I look forward to meeting you. Thanks again, Kristoff
