Question re: 27 CFR 19.489 (case labeling)

27 CFR 19.489 States we must label each case with "Liters or proof gallons". To date we've been labeling thusly:  6 x 750ml. However, per the letter of the reg I'm wondering if we're out of compliance an should change this to 4.5 liters.  Thoughts?

I include total liters on case labels.

We include something like this, for example:

12 x 375ML  Bottles • 44% Alc. by Vol. • 88 Proof

4.5 Liters Total Volume •  1.05 Proof Gallons

Here is what the CFR specifically requires for domestic cases:

(a)Mandatory marks. Except for cases marked in accordance with § 19.496, a proprietor must mark in accordance with § 19.483 the following information on each case of spirits filled in processing:

(1) Serial number in accordance with § 19.490;

(2) Kind of spirits in accordance with the classes and types of spirits set forth in part 5 of this chapter;

(3) The distilled spirits plant number where bottled;

(4) Date filled;

(5) Proof; and

(6) Liters or proof gallons.

 

Indy - if you use Whiskey Systems, as noted in another thread, the system generates these labels for you to print on an avery label stock.

We use a networked Zebra printer for our case labels which make WS less valuable that it could be

Yes, we put more on there than we must, but we also want it clearly labeled with the information that the retailer might want to see on the case, like number and size of bottles. We group all the "quantity" information together, so it is clear to find and verify self-consistency. Like putting both volume in liters and proof gallons, since most don't know what proof gallons are, etc.
