  1. Okay guys. Definitely a newbie question, but i can take the shame. i have never brewed beer or distilled any alcohol yet in my life, but going to do so now. i want to make a super ultra simple single malt whiskey. i just want to run through the steps experimenting to see how it is done. i want to make a small test batch, 5 liters end product at most. i either need someone to spell it out for me, or point me to a formula/recipe that will spell it out for me.

Not getting too hung up with efficiencies or anything, but just the process. Could someone please give me the ratio of 2 row barley weight to water and yeast that i will need to run this first batch ever. Come on now, when i become the next Glenlivet or Makers Mark, i'll remember you fondly!

If that is not possible, please point me to a simple recipe to work off of. All the stuff I have read, is much more complex than i want for starters with a larger size than i can do.

    Thanks.

  2. In Scotland, they make a big deal about water source and the changes it brings to the finished product. My newbie question is does it really matter? Is it such a big deal, that when searching for a location you must find the perfect water source?

  3. Thanks Lenny, i am essentially doing that with the beer experimentation thing, but just going to keep it moving forward. I am starting it all really small anyway to get a feel for it, as well as picking everyone's brain :)

  4. When starting in a mash tun, do you need to control that heat, or can you just load it up to 180 degree water, throw in the grain, and let it do its thing for 2 hours, then sparge it down?

  5. So back to the water thing. I think i figured out the hot water for cleaning and sparge water. Question about keeping water hot enough in a mash tun. Do i need a controlled heating element or controlled heat source for mash tun, or can i just use 180 degree water and let it just come down naturally when i add grains and normal heat loss? I understand that this might be a technique question also. Thanks.

  6. Might have figured out the heating of water, for my small needs, with the help of you guys. I have 2 Navien tankless hot water heaters already, but didn't know that they could be juiced up to produce 185 degree water. They have remote controllers installed on them which limits the temp to 120 degree, safety i guess. i will just have to remove the remote and reset the panels to 185 degrees. I think this will work, unless someone knows how to hijack the remote to allow it to control the water temp beyond the factory set 120 degree?

  7. I have been researching electric heating elements to either use for sparge water or cleaning, or possibly to use in still heating. Most talk in terms of watts. How do equate wattage to temperature? If something says it has a max wattage of 2500 watts, how do i know how hot that can get or how to understand how much heating that does?
