  1. Kelvin Cooperage has started making 25 gallon barrels made from ex-wine barrels. We rejuvenate used wine barrels to expose new wood, then cut the staves down to size and remake into a 25 gallon barrel. This barrel can then be charred and/or toasted to your specifications. These barrels are ideal for craft distilling projects. Contact William at william@kelvincooperage.com or 502-366-5757.

Can you please message me witht he price. Thank you.

  2. We will be in the suburbs of Chicago (although I currently live in DC). The type of still we will be using will be steam jacketed. We will have a relatively narrow, focussed, product offering to include whiskey, rum, and brandy. I would take some leave with my day job and would be willing to travel. Thanks.

  3. Why don't you just sign up for one of the many distilling courses on offer?

Or is internship your code word for free?

Well I just finished a class (paid) this weekend at a distillery and I have visited numerous others. Sorry, its the MBA in me that tells me to get all of the experience possible. In some of my visits to distilleries accross the country, many of them have entertained this offer just as long as I am not setting up in their back yard. Obviousluy no one ever offered this to you...;)

  4. Hello, I am looking for a week long internship at a distillery. Full discosure...we are opening our distillery in the Midwest, so I would imagine there would be no offers from that region. Please contact me if you would consider this. Thank you.

  5. Maker's prevailed in this case, in so much as the wax finish been used in commerce to the point that it is readily recognized. Thus, it enjoys the same protection as a trademark, per se. I would look to them to aggressively pursue any infringement of this right in the distiller spirits industry. It is unlikely that wax used on a wine bottle would cause confusion in the marketplace, and would not probably be an infringement. There is my nickel's worth....

I think the issue was the color and pattern. I know Black Maple Hill uses a black wax over their bottle. I would suggest contacting them to see if they have had issues.

  6. In my opinion, there is no simple answer to your question. There are a larger number of factors (e.g. production volume, raw materials cost, type of whiskey, barrel sizes, overhead, financial sources/interest, type of still (steam vs. electric), local utility costs, etc... etc.... etc...) that enter into production costs. This leads to many different combinations and therefore numerous answers to your question. I would recommend building a algorithm that incorporates all these variables and run numerous iterations until you can find a viable business solution. Good luck!

I know. I'm just looking for one data set.

  7. Hello,

Does anyone have a simple breakdown of direct unit (case) costs for whisky? I understand that depending on type and place these numbers will be different. I have Bill Owens' book. Just looking for more detailed numbers. Thank you very much in advance!

  8. Some connections have aligned and it looks like I have an opportunity to get into the DC market. I have the product, and I have a list of bars who have agreed to help with the launch push and initial orders. I'm in need of a wholesaler/broker as the last step, I'll be making my cold calls this afternoon. In my experience so far, I've learned that each state presents it's own unique set of hurdles, taxes, red tape, and middle men.

Anyone care to share good or bad experiences with the Washington DC alcohol regs and market?

    Thanks!

    -Scott

    Scott,

DC has middle of the road liquor laws, not the worst, not the best. The sales tax here is 1.50/gal, there is no sales of distelled spirits in grocery stores and liquor stors can't sell distilled spirits on sundays. Distilled spirits can only be imported into DC through someone with a valid wholesaler's license. I live here and know someone who is looking to get a wholesalers license. Actually, I recently looked into it too. There are a handfull of wholesalers here in the District. Let me know if you need any help out here.

  9. Hello everyone.

I've been lurking around the ADI forum and website for a while now. I'm in the very early stages of opening a small distillery, and was curious if anyone on here had a sample business plan I could look at just to give me an idea of the structure and some of the numbers you used.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Go to the SBA for the format. For everything else you need to do your own market research in your own region. Plus the business plan must be your plan and not anyone elses. There are plenty of format go bys out there. Erase all of the data, start reasearching, go to the sba score office for help if you wish. They have cheap bp classes. If you try to cut corners on the bp you business will most likely fail. Good luck.

  10. Alrighty Folks,

I have the last three Barrel Thief's available for a while. It has been fun building them, but I am tired of polishing. I will make more in the future, however they will be regular product. The remaining three will be available at the introductory rate of $55.00 each. This still includes shipping. I will fairly dispense of them to the first three contacts. Happy hunting!

P.S. I cant upload the pictures. they look the same as the other ones...except the handles are a single finger loop. I can e-mail pics if needed.

Hey, can you email me a photo.

  11. I'm building my own stills, they count with 300Ltr boilers and 6" bubble plate heads.

I can't give any feedback yet as there is missing some work and no test drive is made yet.

If you aren't in hurry and my stills work fine I could help you with some drawings and sizes.

    Joe

that would be great Joe. Thank you very much.

  12. Here's a real simple plan for a glass marble filled column ... it uses glass marbles, but you can use other materials as well.

I've got some more complex plans with plates and various styles of vents and bubble caps in my library, but they're packed as we're in the process of moving from Ohio to Colorado. If you bug me in about a month when I've got my library unpacked I'll scan several plans for you.

    Stephen

    Thanks!

  13. Does anyone have plans for a column still they have sucessfully built? Or know where I could find them? I know the potential drawbacks of making your own and I wouldn't be doing it I would contract it out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
