  1. DonMateo,

You are on the right track. In the beginning 7+ years ago, distillers made what they drank and sold that.

The build it and they will come worked for a while as previously noted.

This business is like any other; spot your target market and revolve around that. You are doing that and as you proceed you will see many opportunities. You are not just making booz for travelers, you are enhancing their entire trip experience. That's what you do, how you do it is by making really good spirits. Congrats to you and best of luck.

    Cheers,

    Allan

  3. Recent article stating about very few of them making money. Ouch.. That is one of the differences of our workshop for the last 7 years. It is a business and planning for the bottom line is as important as that next recipe. Check out our facebook post on this here

Still room in our March 14 - 18 workshop. Join Us!

  4. A lot has changed in the 7 years we have been doing training. One of the most interesting is how the market has changed. We used to have people attend that intended to make the spirit they like to drink and then sell it. That is not the case now. Even in other industries in the US; the make it and then go sell it has changed. Now more than ever targeting your customer base is important and recognizing those changes too.

Take Millennials, They can order everything off the phone. They demand things Boomers never would think of. This includes the booze they drink.

  6. You have a great opportunity. The Charm of the Farm tasting room has a lot of advantages to building your brand.

Do not forget to collect names and emails of your new friends to continue establishing relationships.

Be sure to work with partners at the resort to offer something else for visitors to do in the area. Just a couple things to think about.

    Best of Luck,

    Allan

  9. So glad you started this thread. We are trainers who work with distillery startups. We are located in Washington state and have had many Canadians attend our week long workshop. We also have done a workshop in Canada (Prince Edward Island) and are working to set up another one (Nova Scotia). We have put up a tab on our website called Canada. BC has had lots of recent changes as a lot of folks up there. You are in very exciting times for this industry. I am going to post your link in previous reply to the Canada page on our site Artisan Craft Distilling Institute. We look forward to facilitating discussion for Canadians and your unique opportunities in the Provinces.

    Cheers,

    Allan

  10. One area we have added to our weeklong workshop is merchandising of the tasting room.

For a new distillery, this is paramount. You need to look as good as your new website (that you spent a lot of time on) to fulfill the expectations of the followers you have worked hard to get on line. As in any retail establishment, you have about 7 seconds to make that first impression when a customer walks in the door. BUT does your distillery front say something about you before they get to the door? And what does your merchandising displays say about your product? Is your signage appropriate? Do you have enough signage period?

For a new distillery this customer experience is more than what is inside the bottle.

We still have space in our June, September and November week long workshops.

    Cheers,

    Allan

  13. I would like to echo the thanks for your service!

I started contacting each state liquor control board about licenses that were discontinued. Was a very hard number to get. The numbers that I did get were pretty low if any. I got about half way through the alphabet of states with less than a handful. Good Luck! This was done early last year so you might want to hit the states (one your in) and states that have higher numbers of distilleries to get a feel for a number.

    Cheers,

    Allan
