tree spirits Posted November 22, 2010 Posted November 22, 2010 We have for sale a small supply of new oak barrels manufactured in Spain. These 250 liter barrels are made from American oak exported to Spain. The barrels are then aged for 2 years with a fine, dry oloroso sherry vinted in Jerez de la Frontera. These are the same sherry barrels used by some of the most exclusive whiskey makers in Scotland. We are buying them directly from the manufacturer and shipping them to the United States. These barrels are shipped with a small amount of sherry inside to keep them from drying out. The cost of these barrels is $795.00, FOB Oakland, Maine In addition we have a supply of refurbished old sherry barrels. These 250 liter barrels have been used to age sherry for a minimum of 10 years. These barrels are re-furbished by the cooperage in Jerez and leak tested. The cost of these barrels is $525.00, FOB Oakland, Maine Please contact Steve Buchsbaum at Tree Spirits Winery & Distillery at 207-877-4477 for more information and orders.

tree spirits Posted November 23, 2010 Author Posted November 23, 2010 Hello Steve. Could you satisfy my ignorance and give a quick tutorial on the items & terms. Reason for refurbish, etc. Thanks, Bob Hi Bob, The new barrels are not refurbished. They are manufactured in Spain, filled with dry oloroso sherry and stored for two years in a bodega in Jerez de la Frontera. After seasoning for two years, most of the sherry is pumped out. Approximately 20 liters of sherry is left in the barrels as "packing material". This sherry prevents the barrel from drying out. Most of these barrels are shipped to Scotland. I visited the cooperage a couple of weeks ago and met with the owner. Tree Spirits Winery and Distillery secured an agreement with the cooperage to import shipping containers of these barrels for our own use and will sell some them. The refurbished barrels are old barrels that have been used for 10-20 years in sherry bodegas. In some cases, these barrels have been sold to the cooperage because they are leaking. In other cases, the barrels are replaced by the sherry producers because they want new barrels. The cooperage refurbishes these barrels and ensures that any leaks are repaired. They are pressure tested. Nevertheless, buyers should be aware that the environment in which barrels are stored is important. High humidity and relatively steady temperatures will help the barrels maintain their integrity. If leaks develop in these refurbished barrels, they can be repaired easily. The terms of sale are as follows: A deposit of $200 per barrel paid with the order. The remainder paid prior to delivery of the barrels.
tree spirits Posted November 29, 2010 Author Posted November 29, 2010 Hello Steve. Could you satisfy my ignorance and give a quick tutorial on the items & terms. Reason for refurbish, etc. Thanks, Bob Hi Bob, I have some additional information regarding your inquiry. Regarding reasons for refurbishment, I have been informed that another reason for barrels to be refurbished is to replace cracked staves or ends. The barrels are de-constructed, the cracked pieces are replaced and the barrel is re-fashioned. Regarding terms, we are pleased to offer a discount for quantities of 5 or more barrels. Order 5 of the barrels aged for 2 years for $600 each. Contact us for quotes on larger orders. Also, Tree Spirits will take back any barrel that a customer is unhappy with for a period of 2 years from date of purchase. Steve Buchsbaum, Tree Spirits LLC 207-877-4477
