Cellarguy Posted July 12, 2016 Posted July 12, 2016 I'm new to distilling. I bought an old copper pot distiller. The pot is in good condition. But, being nudged away in some old cellar for too long, there are a lot of scratches and blackening. I was thinking on polishing, but then my elder brother recommended me an electrostatic powder coating service for painting the copper. He said that the coating the exterior will strengthen the pipes. I'd like to get more information on this. I'd appreciate your suggestions.
Silk City Distillers Posted July 12, 2016 Posted July 12, 2016 That's called character. Put in some hard work, you can get it looking great without resorting to coatings. Me? I'd be concerned the thermal stresses on the powder coat bond from the temperature cycling would cause it to prematurely crack and chip, which would have that still looking absolutely awful.
philstill Posted July 12, 2016 Posted July 12, 2016 It would for sure not make it stronger. Just get some polishing compound and a strong power buffing : http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/3MIndustrial/Abrasives/Products/~/Buffers-and-Polishers?N=7581724&rt=r3 I agree with Silk City about thermal stress. There are engine parts powder coated. But lots of failures too.
Artisan Still Design Posted July 12, 2016 Posted July 12, 2016 you would have to clean the copper to powder coat it anyway, this would probably be done by blasting, most blasting media will weaken the copper.
