We hope you will join us at the Chemist Spirits (https://www.chemistspirits.com/distillery, voted the best distillery in WNC in 2019) for a two and a half days of classes on the business, process and marketing of grain to glass craft spirits. For a detailed scheduled, more information, or to register go to: https://distilling.com/event/7762/
  2. Hi everyone. We're in the midst of finalizing some of the final preparations for our distillery prior to making purchases and moving forward with our business plans. We've got 12-month cash flows, production plans, limited debt, adequate financing and several years' worth of P&L projections along with conservative budgeting for Murphy's law. However, I just received a sales report from the NC ABC (the state where we will most likely initiate sales of our first product line), which I'm still trying to interpret. The report includes quantities of spirits sole over a 12-month period. The person at the ABC who provided it said the report is quantities of bottles, but I have a hard time believing it's bottles and not 9L cases, as some of the numbers for businesses I know sell only in NC are quite low (i.e., low single digits). If some businesses have only one product and they are selling only one bottle per month in the state, I don't see how they could remain in business. With that in mind, we're planning for first year sales of around 1,000 to 1,200 9L cases. Is this figure a reasonable expectation, particularly if we're focused on distribution to a control state with plans for rapidly expanding to other states? We have calls in to clarify this report, but are concerned about the reliability of the information. Does it seem feasible for big producers in the state to be selling only about 400 bottles (33 cases) of product on a monthly basis? We're not yet at the point of no return. I'm trying to verify our thesis before we get to that point. Thanks for your input.
  3. Evening folks. Just received word that a bill to allow NC DSP holders in certain counties (those that have established a local ABC Board) to sell one bottle of product to tour goers on a one-bottle-per-year basis. Here's a link to the bill, which was presented to the governor today: http://www.ncleg.net/Sessions/2015/Bills/House/PDF/H909v5.pdf Of concern is the POS language that would require distillers who sell bottles directly to consumers to keep a database that would maintain various data points about the customers for 12 months. My main concern is privacy liability, as maintaining drivers license numbers and DOBs for customers is ripe for identity theft. On the plus side is building a marketing database and selling product -albeit on a limited scale - direct to consumers. Take a look at the proposed bill and let me know what you think. Just curious to hear some thoughts on it. Main question - is selling one bottle per 12 months per customer worth the infrastructure, in your opinion?
  4. Like many I’ve been following the boards for a couple years now working on opening our dream microdistillery. I’ve learned so much from these forums and they've been a huge resource for us. I’ve tried to give back when possible, and will try to contribute more and more as I learn from my experiences. I’ve never done a formal introduction and it’s been long overdue. My wife and I are currently waiting patiently for our DSP to be approved (143 days to be exact) for Doc Porter’s Distillery. We will be a grain to grain distillery located in Charlotte, NC around the corner from a couple great breweries (Olde Mecklenburg Brewery and Sugar Creek Brewing Company) and a soon to be distillery as well (Great Wagon Road Distilling Company). We're going to start out with a 100% NC wheat vodka and then move into whiskey and gin with locally sourced ingredients. Renovations have been creeping along and equipment should be arriving soon. If all goes well we hope to be in production in April. If any of you are in Charlotte and want to check on our progress drop me a line.
