  13. In reality you will not have a perfect knowledge of what you are going to sell over the next quarter, as you know. Building the relationship with your distributor and discussing this is everything. Takes away the anxiety from you and lets you concentrate on why they carry your product in the first place. The distributor probably has a time line that works best for them. Start there and work backwards. Very important topic. Just my thought.
  14. You could also visit your local Small business Development Center. They can assist you in gettting industry information. http://asbdc-us.org/ This is a no charge program. We cover marketing and business planning in our week long workshop. Check us out at www.artisancraftdistilling.com in addition to other aspects of the distillery business. Cheers! Allan
  15. Please also consider our week long workshop in June. Our workshop will be in Enumclaw, WA June 25th - 29th at the base of Mt Rainier. find our agenda at www.artisancraftdistilling.com. you can also see us on Pinterest at http://pinterest.com/Distilling/ We are in our third year of training new distillers. You will find some of the distillers we trained on our pinterest site. We focus on the business planning and marketing aspects as well as the legal and compliance issues. Of course the hands on distilling training takes place too. If you ask the state liquor boards for informaiton on licenses they have granted, you will also be able to get the number of licenses that have been discontinued, or let lapesed. The industry is a business and we try to cover a lot in one week to help prepare for running the distillery as a business. That is why we call it Your First Big Step to the Next Big Thing! This is a dynamic process to be sure. Check out our testimonials on our site. Cheers! Allan
  16. We have found from our attendees to our workshops that local zoning is often an issue. Many municipalities know little about this industry so far. Now the ones that have figured out the traffic a distillery can attract are opening it up a bit. A visit to the local officials as mentioned above is your very best option. We have found that some education to these folks can help. For example, fire codes can be interpreted differently when applying them to a distillery. Good Luck!
  17. You might try some primary research activities. Visit your local bartenders' guild, bars, restaurants (demographics may be embeded here) and find out who and what they and their customers are looking for. Secondary, you might try looking at national trend in this industry., still pretty new depending on where you are. local lenders, municipalities still not sure how to handle this industry. hope this helps a little
