Spiced Rum Production Question

I have experimented with using the botanical basket (during distillation), maceration of a blend of spices together then aging, maceration of individual spices and blending then aging, and aging then blending. So I think there are a few ways you can go. That is the great thing about rum, there is a lot of freedom in your process.

Just experiment. I think the most typical method is to add a spice bag into the barrel or stainless thank, though. Just play around. Where is your distillery? There's Hagar out here distilling, but I think he is more like Hagar47.

In the oldest rum distillery in Venezuela they use a "mother rum", a very old and very spiced -highly secret recipe- maceration from which they take larger portions for the better, more aged rums and lesser for the others. They add those portions at barreling and then age. I was told also of different macerations or "mother rums" for different characters and styles.
