When comparing and shopping do not only consider "by the piece" pricing. Always check for shipping and tarriff charges.

Rusty, just curious, do you have any reports back from the "Home trade" (off-premise) users regarding cork on wood t-tops? When asked why we use synthetic, we have several products on display in the shop showing evaporation can occure through a dry cork and not so tight capseal, and also in the act of a third or fourth opening, simple breakage from people with stone hands like myself..

  2. Good morning AP,

Caveat: check everything out with a professional:

I have see some operations where there is not a full loop for the steam condensate to go back to the boiler. As the steam transfers heat to the pot or other point of use, it will cool, more if the BTU number is weak or pressure is low, that cooler steam partially is condensed to water. That water has to be bled off so there will not be a blockage (heavier material) in the way as the steam travels back to the boiler. Your home heating boilers will have an expansion tank or a bladder for this purpose. Some people bleed off the condensate, not collect it and send it back to the still, always requiring new water: 1)to be brought up to steam: new water +/- 50 degrees f, return condensate around 190+ f 2)the thermo shock of a cooler water being introduced to the hotter plates: bang bang bang, and 3) continued introduction of natural or added corrosives to the plates in your boiler: the muddy stuff when you drain to comes from somewhere. We have a condesate return tank (20 gallon?), aquired from the still manufacturer,B-H, that collects and feeds the boiler as required. If there is not enough in the tank to feed the boiler the tank has a float valve from the municipal supply. If there is too much, overflow of the tank will help clean your floor. that has only happened once to us in 4 years.

One more gem, most commercial built pots that are steam fed should have a drain on the bottom. Ours is on the condensate return line. The lowest point. Condensate return is not steam return.IF COOLBefore use, drain that section before or as starting the boiler. If not, that will act as a blockage until steam pressure pushes it through. Effeciency and pressure are your concerns.

The effects of which I speak will not show up immediately, but you'll be upset when your 20 year boiler lasts only 15 years. Surely this all is relativly more important as you go up in still and boiler size.

    Again, cherk with a professional.

  3. Again I agree with Coop.

But, steam is steam.. You control the flow to control the temperature of your pot, and the bioler will shut on and off as required. I recommend speaking with a plumber. Have you thought about condesate return? New water for a bioler is life shortening. I have redundant alarms on the condensor tower of the still. If it gets too hot the boiler will shut off and a whistle will blow. If anyone remembers visiting us here in the early days you would have heard quite a slam when the water feed (Backflow preventer)closed. We solved that with a spring loaded pin rather than a flapper. Wait, are several of my comments pertinent to another ongoing thread on Steam vs Direct heat source?

  4. Dick,

Commonly called "BarCode", or "zebra", "GS1 US Partner Connections, Barcodes and eCom" is a result of condensed world commerce. It is worth the short read of its history and court decisions to understand what options, good and not so good, you have. They are the only show in town, but others have been awarded thousands of numbers as part of court decisions and sell them at discount...

It is private not government. Actually more like a dues driven membership "Club". When applying for a "COLA" TTB may only require knowing what space is dedicated to a barcode. It in itself is not required such as the Gov't Warning statement. There are threads on this site you can search that will help. Do ask for advice if you need regarding errors people have made. There are issues with Sizing, location, contrast, etc. for the "scanners" to work properly on glass bottles. On some labels they look out of place, but many warehousmen, think distributors, and vendors, think Costco,Wal-mart, K-Mart, etc, will not even entertain an item with out one.

    Cheers,

    Bob

  5. I just rec'd this. Any comments? It does not read "American".

    Hello,

How are you doing? I'm sorry for not informing you about my short traveling to Scotland for a Seminar. It was something urgent and i didn't even inform anyone about this traveling. Right now i need your help because my wallet got lost on my way to the hotel I lodged in, Inside the wallet was my phone, cards, diary, including my return ticket and other vital documents. I have reported the case to the police but i am worried and stranded here. I find it very difficult to say this but i need an urgent loan of 1500 British pounds for me to sort out my hotel bills and get myself back home. if you can do me this favor I will always show gratitude throughout my lifetime. I will appreciate whatever you can afford to help me with and I promise to refund the money as soon as I return home, Please let me know if you can help me out, I will be glad to read from you soon.

    Warm regards

  6. Good morning all.

Raising this thread again. I am asking if anyone has had experience on what info is required/asked by TTB for outside single packaging? Will it be similar to the Master carton info? We have a collection of these boxes and the info goes from overwhelming to spartan.

    Thanks,

    Bob

  7. The chemistry of there not being a "one for one" ratio for size of the unit, will be experienced by those who will not listen. So, just for the record, because I know there are people who misunderstand this info, you must have a DSP license to distill for beverage ready products. It is not the size of the still that parameters the law. Terms such as "experimental still", "test batch", "under 1 gallon" and the like tend to be taken out of context by those who may want to read in their favor. I've actually started to only one time per individual state this during our distillery tours. You look like an idiot to everyone trying to argue with a guest when he says something like "well in my county in (pick a state) there are no rules against it, I've checked". Or how about "My cousin is an accountant for the Weather bureau (NOAA)and he should know!"

Let us always be as clear as our Spirits on this.

    Cheers, Bob

  8. This is actually a subject that does really benefit revisiting. I will use the info provided. Thanks to all.

A little advice would be to ask about the process to raise your coverage level. It might be worth overbuying now as it will be a pain, or at least it was for us to increase, especially when we were barreling and had sales of about oh.. let's say...Zero. there was no understanding by our local agency. The process took so much effort and time I would glady have paid the increased premium fee in the beginning. You will reach your limits.

    Cheers,

    Bob

  9. Yes we bottle at ambiant or a bit lower, weigh each bottle. At our numbers it is just to easy to weigh. As will stated some look a bit fuller. We keep those for the shop. And as always it is good to have confermation on info. Thanks D.D for asking. Just a question: Does Cork for you all mean cork or synthetic T's? Do you have PVC capseals on these when they move?

3 more posts and I'm at 100. Then maybe I won't bother you all for a while? Just kidding.

    Bob

  10. Chris, Odd you should mention that fortune cookie prediction.

One local (to my area)example held that a family got their teen a low limit card for college. The Bad Guys, on shore this time, got hold of the number. On campus, without the University's approval, Bad Guys were offering to exchange new students hometown card for a card with easier payment, bigger limit and lower rate. "Sign here, sign here, Soc. Sec. # there, address, and here is you free Sweatshirt". She was supposed to be an adult and take care of things according to the parents. They did not moniter her account. Information had been easily obtained. She was in denile when seeing unendorsed charges to her card. The charges went undisputed until after the bigger damage was done. They were using her card to initiate a scam the parents. As Crosby, Stills, Nash and, (I think) Young stated: "Teach Your Children Well..." Be proactive.

OK, off the soapbox and now back to distilling.

  11. Look at this, 10 now 11 responses so quickly. Firstly, Paul45, congratulations for bringing this to the surface. More information the better for all. Good. Hope to shake your hand someday.

But, no "tippy toeing" here. No apologies. I do not care about anyones feelings on this one! Join this century of what was previously White Collar Crime. Doesn't smell right? Dammit! Dammit! It is Rotten! And you have no protection on the international level. These people are yours and our nations personal economic enemies. And guess where their money gains go! Does anyone have a son or daughter in the service, off shore, in harms way to protect our nation? Wake up! Now....

If you are curious about international transactions, TTB has a division for that. I sat in on their presentations at the last Expo in Cinncinatti. They want to help. Is that correct, Ralph?

Beyond the want of thinking any invoice (sale) is a good sale, all times think of what the maximum benefit and maximum risk to you is when acting on this unrequested sale. There is NO balance. Always ask who, what, where,...you get the rest, before any extraordinary contact.

You have triggered an action, answered their phone so to speak.. You are at risk also now. You may not think so, but defend yourself. These are not amateurs. They may sound it, but you have now moved up their food chain.

    1) Call your CC processor alert their fraud unit. Be prepared with all related numbers, dates and facts relating to this transaction..Request a new account.. NOT JUST A NEW NUMBER! Immediately print/get a paper copy of your old account transations to a point in time you feel comfortable with. Ask that you be alerted of ANY unauthorized new post dated or predated transaction to either of those accounts.

    2) Call your banks. Again do all the above. And not with a Customer Service Rep or Branch Rep, but with a Fraud or Compliance Officer (I was one once). The process is in place to service this request even in the smallest of banks. Regulators and Insurerers and Homeland Security see to it.

3)Alert anyone you have done EFT's with. Including TTB and FRB if you have done so.

    4) However you are connected to your business look to break that bridge. If you are sole prop., partnership, PPC, etc. this can get viral. This is one reason we old fashiondly incorporated.

    5) Always, but especially now, we all should look for tiny transactions on all our transaction accounts. $.12's or $.25's any number that you cannot account for. They often may be listed as "Telephone Credits" "Service Credits" or any other casual posting ID's. Do not think it is trivial or a waste of time. These are "Bad Guys" probing transactions to see if you are reconciling your accounts.

6)Int'l Cash checks, Money Orders, W.U. ..Listen, you should know your banks policy. Besides, coast to coast USA, most transactions are instant now. "Float" is part of the past. And do not take "We are not one of those big city banks y'know" excuses. International, your bank should not credit your account immediately. They should collect than credit post your account, even from our good friends to the North, a Canadian transaction. But it should not take much time to do so. 2 months was mentioned(A.Pete). Take a walk on that institution now if that is so. Besides, why take that payment and the risk anyway.

I'm glad I had an experience at 10 years old that cost me $3.50 at a carnival midway with one of those "swing the ball on a string to knock the pin down" games. Lesson learned.

I've seen the results of people not paying attention. Whole families, several families, assets evaporate with no recourse. Lives ruined. Banks ran for cover. CC clearing houses ran for cover. And do not depend on Credit Reporting agency or Credit insurance services, you know those $.5% of balance monthly fees to either be correct or protect. They are your friends until the "Small Print" kicks in.

If you have read this to this point, and unless you want to be on 20/20 or any other TV newsmag, do not limit yourself to what I say to protect yourself. Do more if you can think of how. You all have worked very hard for your dough. Please protect it.

    Good luck.

    Bob
