  1. Just mashing, or distilling as well? Do you use a CIP ball or similar on the output ports in the tank? Any worries about the mash clogging the port?
  2. No, there's a little tail if you look closely. Barrel. But by heritage/ethnically I'm Dutch, so perhaps there is another play on words available here. Food for thought...
  3. Do you apply for COLA approval for things you only sell at your distillery retail shop or do you use the exemption form? It seems that if you only make 10 gallons of something, getting a label for it through COLA would be a real PITA.
  4. I'm also interested. Does this form apply? http://www.ttb.gov/forms/f510031.pdf
  5. What sort of process exactly does someone importing a still currently have to go through?
  6. Right, but how exactly do I notify them? When? Do I need to hear back before using the equipment? Here's what a TTB presentation says: Change in Construction or Use of Buildings and Equipment • When a change in construction or use of buildings and equipment(other than changes to or alternating premises) occurs: – Prior to change – file letter notice – Must incorporate changes on the next amended registration TTB F 5110.41 filed 27 CFR 19.193 What does this letter need to look like? "#XY1234656, column reflux, 123 gallons"? Just that? Updated drawing, or does that wait for the next [yearly?] registration?
  7. If you update your major equipment after you are registered and operating what exactly do you need to do? Resend the supplemental page? When? Immediately or next time the registration form is sent in? Do you need to wait for a response before using the equipment?
  8. > The two registrations referred to in the earlier posts by me were for other marks. That explains it. It seems that the number of registered (paid for) trademarks in this field is fairly low. Has anyone registered their business and all product names?
  9. Searching for "WATER TOWER WHITE LIGHTNING" doesn't turn anything up on the basic word search. Should it? PRAIRIE MOONSHINE returns a result, but not a spirit.
  10. What kind of "good strong" yeast exactly? Wouldn't the temp be more yeast strain dependent than the sugar variety?
  11. Any idea why uspto (http://tmsearch.uspto.gov/bin/gate.exe?f=tess&state=4804:ug6pjz.1.1) searches doesn't turn up any of the spirit names?
  12. Are you thinking about pumping while mashing or pumping while distilling? It seems like you could run some piping from the bottom to the top with a pump inline to do this while distilling. Bad idea?
  13. Beautiful work. I'd love to hear more technical details (gallons, dimensions, plates, etc...)

  15. I know this seems like an easy question, but I just want to confirm that the state taxes in the above cases are calculated from the Michigan "Base Price" which includes a 65% markup from the wholesale price you actually sell it to them for. If so, it would seem that if your volume is low one could set a base price for the product at a lowish number and not actually sell many bottles for wholesale thereby paying lower taxes on tasting room sales which would be marked up from the minimum retail selling price. Is this the way its supposed to work? All the examples and documentation that Michigan provides assume that you're a retailer not a manufacturer/distiller.
  16. Apologies for the "repost". I'm wondering if someone can help me better understand the following for Michigan. Let's say the COGS is $10.00. Let's say the Wholesale Price is $15.54. If I understand the math right, the Base Price is $25.64. For bottle sales from the tasting room, I'd owe 12% on the Base Price ($3.08). The Minimum Retail Price is $30.00. So my profit per bottle is $30 - $3.08 - $10.00. Is this correct? If I use a bottle of mine for mixed drinks from the tasting room do I just owe the federal ($2.14) and state taxes ($3.08) on it?

  18. I thought I'd seen this referenced somewhere but a search didn't turn any thing up. Is it possible on both a Federal and State (Michigan) level for two separate small distillers (MI definition) to share the same address, production space, equipment and tasting room? Is some sort of alternating premise possible (or even necessary)? If yes, how about the bonded area? Probably that would need to be separate?
  19. Its a sad state of affairs when more than two years later, I just got the same response word for word -- and its a site that doesn't even have a residence on the property (just nearby residences on other properties).
