Are tri-clamp fittings required?

Recommended Posts

For example, if lets say I'm transferring 100 proof from one tank to another with an AODD pump. Is it allowed to use a hose with suction to pump from the opening of the tank into the opening of the other tank? Or will inspectors require that pumping only be done with no open air/possibility of contaminants by requiring tri-clamp fittings? Thank you!

I am not aware of any requirements to use TC fittings.

With that said, the answer is likely to be dependent on your location and your AHJ.

Specifically, your Health Department and possibly your State Fire Marshal. Those are the entities you should ask. You might also ask other distilleries in your state, assuming you are in USA.

Since you didn't provide your location, it's difficult to be more specific.

Have you asked your inspectors?

No I haven't asked yet, seems whenever I ask any questions that require more money+equipment, the answer is always yes! And then its followed up upon. I'm in VA.

Inspectors will always default to the “safest” option when asked a question.  It’s the “ I told them and they still blew up it’s not my fault” mentality.
Why do you think this is an issue? Have you had other locals say so or you just overthinking it?

I doubt anyone would say anything unless you brought it up. Barrels don't have tri clamps so you're not likely using them in every application anyways. Tri clamps are cheap and terribly convenient and useful though, so I don't why you wouldn't want them in as many places as possible.

Avoid a wild hose spaying 100p spirit all over your DSP once and it's payed for itself.
