whiskeytango
I know this has been hashed out many times on this blog but im not seeing this specific. We are planing on being F1 with no sprinklers. So i see everyone saying that F-1/I Occupancy, no sprinkler system allows –30 gallons, open system, per control area -120 gallons, closed system, per control area So my question is can we have 120 gallons in a closed storage area as well as have 30 in open process, for a total of 150 gallons on hand? Or is it one or the other, 30 in open or 120 in closed?
clearwaterbrewer
While I feel 100% confident that it is 150 total, I would do your drawings and proposals to the city as the more restrictive 120 total.
Lenny
I was told that such things are up to interpretation by fire inspector. It's sort of a grey area. Another one of those areas... wouldn't it make sense for there to be a differentiation between 120g of 190proof spirit stored in a closed container vs. 120g of 40proof spirit? I agree with the above recommendation. Keep your proposals/process descriptions conservative if you feel that you can reasonably work within those limits. If you need professional help to stamp and sign documents that explain how you are working within the code to your local inspectors (something we've contiguously had to deal with), shoot me a pm and I'd happily pass on some great resources. whiskeytango
So I think i was able to track down the answer Under TABLE 2703.1.1(1) it says The aggregate quantity in use and storage shall not exceed the quantity listed for storage. So sounds like its 120 max counting your open and closed storage combined. Not 120 storage plus 30 open,

Not 120 storage plus 30 open, Could you clarify please, what regulations should be used to get a Fire Marshal approval for aging few tons of Whiskey in a Distillery as far as storage of greater than 120gals of class 1A or 1B flammables (i.e. >80proof spirits) is prohibited? Rado Distilling
In the IFC there is an excemption for spirits stored in oak casks so for fire coade purposes the volumes of spirits in barrles doesn't count towards your MAQs. This does not give you an exception from the IBC hazard class so if you're going to age out more then 120 gallons you become hazardus from a IBC perspective. Rauss
Thank you for clarifying the matter. How it will affect you to "become hazardous from a IBC perspective" ? Best regards
