  1. But the iStill is made in the EU (Netherlands). Are you saying they're non-compliant?
  2. Gotta ask. What would be the legal issues around a still?
  3. Doh, you're absolutely right, it was Johnny! Brain fart as he's got family in the area too so I just equated CO trip with him. Lenny's got some great advice there for a day trip out of CSprings - Wood's and Boathouse in Salida and he's just up the road from there. Awesome scenery too.
  4. Hey Todd! If at all possible, make time to swing by and see Todd's new digs at Leopold Bros. Absolutely beautiful - they're even floor malting now. And of course, you'll have to swing by the old stomping grounds and see what Mitch has done to the place. Since I was down south last summer pestering you, I've steadily inched towards the dream... Actually pitching my plan to the Elizabeth city council next week. Assuming they're amicable, I plan to break ground this summer. Hope you have an awesome vacation!
  5. Terse, but valid point. Search box, upper right corner. Type "filtration" and chose "forums". Let the magic happen.
  6. Factoring in boiler efficiency (electric is essentially 100% efficient as the energy is directly applied to the wash), the difference isn't quite that dramatic. Closer to $3/gal propane equivalency. Propane was north of $3 a couple winters ago. Electric prices have become fare more stable with the move to natural gas for generation. So yeah, propane is cheaper at the moment but who knows in the near future... Even with the more expensive electric, remember we're talking under $20 for heating on a 1000L still run.
  7. Bryan's patent is readily visible: https://www.google.com/patents/WO2015013704A2 Key component appears to be heat, which makes sense as in general, a chemical reaction rate doubles for every 10 degree Celsius increase in temperature.
  8. Davis' talk was standing room only at the ADI conference. Will be interesting to see the results from his beta testers...
  9. Existing would certainly be grandfathered, I'm sure. Under the proposal, sprinklers would be required for distilled spirit storage quantities over the Class 1C flammable liquid MAQ, up to 10 feet in height, 2 racks (flu space) with 3 barrels per row in each rack, or single rack with 4 barrels per row. Here's the link to the full proposal (search for F127 – 13): http://www.iccsafe.org/wp-content/uploads/00-CompleteGroupB-MonographUpdates.pdf
  10. I know there's a proposal to remove the barrel exemption from the next IFC revision.
  11. Not NFPA. IFC 3401.2 is the "barrel exemption".
  12. Should. It was approved by the senate and sent to Hickenlooper for signature last week.

    Mason jars

Don't do it. Gimmick and bartenders hate them.
  14. Going to vary significantly based on grain type. Corn > Barley > Wheat > Rye in extract potential. I believe 5.6 proof gallons is the typical listed max for (a bushel of) corn.
  15. Same is true of S-Corp as long as you've got sufficient tax basis to cover the corp losses. IOW, if you only put $10K into the business, and it has $12K of losses, you only get to deduct $10K from your income. The remaining $2K carries forward though.
  16. Totally on the same page Bluestone. I'm really curious why so many distillers seem to opt for the LLC. I'm planning on going S-Corp for the distillery operations and an LLC for the capital holdings (real estate, equipment, etc.) Yeah, the taxes are a bit more complicated but that's what the accountant's for.
  17. Those that went LLC over S-Corp, what pushed you in that direction?
  18. All vodka requires a formula approval. (edit...) Hmm, re-checked and you're right - no formula if no HCFBM.
  19. I think you'll find a better product if you shoot for an 8% ABV. Should reduce heads as well. Double-check your pH is appropriate for your enzymes. I love Sebstar HTL but its pH range is stupid narrow.
  20. ~$450 seemed to be the going rate on the ADI conference floor.
  21. Sorry John, I didn't see your note until I got home from the conference. I'll call you in a few days.
  22. Low watt density element(s) and a mixer are key. Keeping the elements clean is important too. Once a buildup starts, it just aggravates scorching issues. The new Blichmann BoilCoils are an interesting idea. Their watt density is so low, scorch should be just about impossible. http://www.blichmannengineering.com/products/boilcoil
  23. Under the proposed law, a distillery pub would have to make 15 percent of its money on-site from selling food. The bill would also impose a cap of 5,000 cases of liquor produced on-site each year and a cap of 300 cases that can be sold on-site as wholesale. http://www.9news.com/story/news/local/politics/2015/03/24/colorado-distillery-pubs/70378080/
  24. That is fine as long as the door between has a TTB approved lock, AND there's a separate entrance to the distillery.
