Russia's military-industrial base cannot overcome the shortage of ammunition and will hamper the ability of the occupying forces to support offensive operations in eastern Ukraine in 2023.

Analysts at the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) note that, according to the statements of Ukrainian and American officials, the daily intensity of the artillery fire of the occupiers has already decreased by 75%. This is the lowest level since February 24, 2022.

According to experts, Russian troops have probably reduced their shelling due to reduced supplies, or are reconsidering their tactics. ISW said the Russians had exhausted their stocks of 122mm and 152mm caliber and other reserves in the summer of 2022. They believed that excessive artillery attacks would lead to faster results.

“The Russian Federation must now move additional projectiles from rear areas and purchase additional ammunition from foreign countries to counteract such shortages, which will lead to a decrease in the rate of fire. In Russia, it is increasingly recognized that fundamental problems, such as ammunition shortages and the inability to provide troops, are seriously hinder offensive operations," the analysts explain.
"Shell hunger" of the invaders

As early as December 29, 2022, military expert Pyotr Chernik said that a “shell hunger” had begun in Russia. He calculated that a classic summer artillery barrage is 60-80 thousand shells per day. At present, the occupiers use at least three times less ammunition daily - 18-20 thousand tons per day.

According to the GUR of Ukraine, until March 2023, the problem with the presence of ammunition in the Russian army, in particular artillery, will become very obvious.

Maxar Technologies showed how Soledar and Bakhmut look like in the Donetsk region, where there are fierce battles with the Russian invaders.

To compare the extent of the destruction caused by the Russian aggression, the company posted satellite images of Soledar on Twitter on August 1, 2022 and January 10, 2023.

"Additional satellite imagery of the city of Soledar, Ukraine, before (August 1, 2022) and after (January 10, 2023), showing houses, schools and buildings destroyed as a result of months of fighting and artillery skirmishes," the message says.

The situation in Soledar and Bakhmut

Russian troops concentrated huge forces on the assault on Soledar in the Donetsk region. Military expert, retired Colonel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Roman Svitan believes that the Russian invaders will not be able to encircle and capture the city, where fierce fighting has been going on for several days.

The enemy is suffering serious losses in the Soledar area. It is noted that the assault on Soledar in the Donetsk region and other cities costs Wagner huge losses. We are talking about tens of thousands of corpses.

Consumer inflation in Ukraine in 2022 amounted to 26.6%.

"In December 2022, consumer inflation rates remained at the level of the previous month - 0.7% per month. Annual inflation amounted to 26.6%," the press service of the Ministry of Economy said in a statement.

"Such an indicator of consumer inflation indicates that during a full-scale war, the level of which Europe has not known for the past almost eighty years, the Ukrainian economy withstood and successfully adapted to functioning in a war. Despite fears about the development of hyperinflationary processes and a high probability of inflation beyond 30% under such force majeure conditions, the inflation rate turned out to be conditionally comparable with a number of European countries.

Economic forecasts for the next year: details

The National Bank predicted that by the end of 2022, inflation in Ukraine will be 31%, and in 2023 it will slow down to about 20%.

The Russian Federation is preparing to announce a new wave of mobilization in order to send up to 500,000 people to the front.

According to the British newspaper The Times, referring to Western intelligence data, a decision could be made within the next few weeks.

Allegedly, by April, when the weather becomes more favorable, the Russians want to send up to half a million people to the front for a "new large-scale offensive."

“Serious preparations are underway in the Russian regional military registration and enlistment offices, the Kremlin has conducted a closed poll. Russian citizens are concerned about the war, but they also do not want to put up with defeat,” an unnamed official told the publication.

The war in Ukraine has become a testing ground for the latest military developments, both Ukrainian and Western. CNN writes about this in a large analytical article.

It is noted that one of the most important innovations in the current war was the Ukrainian network target designation system for artillery, which made it possible to quickly transmit intelligence from drones to artillerymen and, no less important, to easily calculate the coordinates of a target for aiming a specific gun at it.

The targeting app is among dozens of battlefield innovations that Ukraine has come up with in nearly a year of war, often finding cheap solutions to costly problems.

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the losses of Russians in Ukraine in the first half of January totaled 9,360 people. If the pace of liquidation of the Russian occupiers continues, this will be a new record for the losses of Russian troops in the war against Ukraine.

As the military-political observer of the Information Resistance group Alexander Kovalenko noted, in January 2023, the losses of the Russian occupation forces "may exceed 18 thousand killed alone, not to mention the wounded."

"And here, it seems to me, it is worth remembering what is generally happening with Russians with losses in the past few months, especially after they began partial mobilization. After the start of partial mobilization in September, October, and then November, and after it December, in turn, became a record month for the Russian occupation forces in terms of losses. In total, the Russian invaders lost 47,110 killed and an unknown number of wounded," Kovalenko continued.

At the same time, the expert noted that the statistics of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine do not indicate the number of wounded invaders. However, there are average coefficients for sanitary losses, within 1 killed means 3 wounded, or 1 against 4.

“Even if these 47,110 are multiplied by 2, and not 3 or even 4, we still get 94,220 people wounded. And this is a total, roughly speaking, sanitary returnable and irrecoverable losses within 150 thousand people for just 3 month of hostilities. That is, from the very beginning of the partial mobilization, the Russian occupation troops lost 50% of its plan to call up 300 thousand, and who replaced these 150 thousand in the combat zone or 50 thousand a month? And they were replaced by those soldiers who are not in landfills," he added.

Kovalenko stressed that by the New Year, the occupiers "almost completely exhausted the conditional resource of their autumn mobilization, because each unit that lost its combat capability should be compensated."

"Judging by the acceleration of the loss rate, by the end of February, the beginning of March, the September biomass will no longer be part of the Russian occupation forces. That is, for January and February, the Russian occupation forces need to collect compensation for losses of at least 50 thousand per month. And not only. 50 thousand - this is a compensatory indicator that is spent per month, therefore, a full-fledged compensation should be a quantitative indicator of at least 100 thousand. And this is only the part that is in the combat zone so that the combat capability of the units is not lost. And now, subject to such an emergency recruitment compensating resource, the question arises - if Russia wants a protracted war and at the same time also attack, how many people does it need to recruit mobilized per month in order to form a new strike force in addition to compensation? Kovalenko asked a question.

Kovalenko believes that in order to implement the plan for a protracted war, this number should be much larger in monthly terms. At the same time, for a new large-scale offensive operation, this number should completely exceed the mobilization of 150-200 thousand per month.
