Now the Ukrainian authorities are aware of 19.5 thousand Ukrainian children who were deported by the occupiers to Russia.

This figure is not final, but several hundred children who were returned speak of violence by the invaders, said Presidential Commissioner for Children's Rights Daria Gerasimchuk on Radio Liberty.

"Today we have information about 19,514 children. This is both on the fact of the appeal of local authorities, and on the fact of the appeal of relatives, relatives, parents and witnesses of the deportation or forced displacement of a child. ... Sometimes the children we return are miraculously brought with are notes from other children, which, for example, we did not even know about and did not know that they were there," says Gerasimchuk.

She notes that 19.5 thousand is not the final figure. The calculation of deported children is complicated, in particular, by the fact that some of them were transported not to Russia, but to the occupied territory of Ukraine, which still remains uncontrolled.

"There is not always direct contact and understanding of what is happening with the children, there is not always a connection. And therefore, perhaps one of the children is there, but we do not know what is happening to them now. But there is, on the contrary, facts when relatives, relatives think, believe that everything is fine with the parents of the child, with the child himself, they are simply in the occupied territory, they do not have the opportunity to get in touch, and in fact, in fact, the Russians have already kidnapped the child, "- she explained.

At the same time, Gerasimchuk noted that the figure of 744,000 deported children given by the enemy is exaggerated.

“We are waiting for the Russian Federation to still be forced to report. And then we will see a real, possibly true figure. But by reducing it, we definitely do not reduce the crime that the Russian Federation commits against Ukrainian children. Even if they only kidnapped one child, then that would be a disaster," she said.

The presidential plenipotentiary also said that before deportation, Russians "sort" children, and after they are moved to Russia, they poison, beat, and instill Russian culture in them.

"The Russians just want to replenish their nation with the help of our children. .... They carry out so-called forced "medical examinations" in the occupied territories, allegedly with the aim of "taking care" of children, but in reality this is nothing more than such a selection of those children who have no health problems.They are also abducted and taken to the Russian Federation... Very often children are punished for refusing to speak Russian, refusing to learn and sing the Russian anthem, to stand up during the Russian anthem.Almost all children testify that they were mentally beaten very hard, called names in different ways for being Ukrainians. There are even children who testify that they were beaten for such disobedience," Gerasimchuk noted.

The children who were returned tried to capture these crimes on camera, but they were forced to delete all the photos and videos before transferring them to their parents. So for now, there is only oral testimony. Now relevant services are working with children, collecting their testimonies.

Xi Jinping: I am preparing China for war. The world should take this seriously, - Foreign Affairs

The leader of the People's Republic of China, Xi Jinping, said that he is preparing his country for war.

His words were quoted by Foreign Affairs.

Xi Jinping made this statement at the annual meeting of the parliament and its top political advisory body.

In total, the Chinese leader revealed the topic of war readiness in four separate speeches. On one occasion, he told his generals to "fight bravely."

China also announced a 7.2% increase in its defense budget. This budget has already doubled over the past decade.

In addition, Beijing wants to reduce the country's dependence on grain imports from abroad.

"In recent months, Beijing has unveiled new military preparedness laws, new bomb shelters in cities across the Taiwan Strait, and new National Defense Mobilization offices across the country," Foreign Affairs said.

The publication notes that the conflict is not inevitable. But "if Xi says he is preparing for war, it would be foolish not to take his word for it."

President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the Ukrainian people have stopped the biggest anti-human force of our time, which despises and wants to destroy everything that gives meaning to a person.

As an UNIAN correspondent reports, the head of state said this in the city of Bucha while participating in events on the occasion of the anniversary of the liberation of the Kyiv region.

“Why does Russia kill? Why does Russia mock, torture, terrorize? It seeks to destroy the dignity of people so that a person means zero. So that an ordinary person in the territory controlled by the Kremlin is only dust under the feet of those who hold power. Russia today, and it will never be in Ukraine. Never in all of Europe, on the land of each of the peoples who defend freedom, as we do today," the head of state stressed.

According to him, on the streets of Bucha, the world saw the real Russian evil without disguise.

"We will not let you forget! Human decency will not let you forget! On the streets of Bucha, the world saw Russian evil, evil without disguise. It saw what the Kremlin was trying to bring to other streets of Ukraine, other streets of Europe and the world that could be captured by Russian invaders, could, if not for you, if not for us, if not for the Ukrainians," Zelensky said.

Zelensky noted that Bucha has become a city, after seeing which, after the Russian occupation, the world has really changed, the world has really woken up.

"For more than 400 days, the Ukrainian people have been absolutely completely focused on repelling the genocidal full-scale aggression of Russia. Our friends are helping Ukraine. They are here today. We are grateful to them. Ukraine is being helped by peoples who, like us, believe that human life is the highest value," Zelensky said.

The President said that a battle is taking place on Ukrainian soil for the foundation of a free world.

"We will definitely win this battle. The Russian evil will fall right here - in Ukraine, and will not be able to rise again. Humanity will win. But humanity should remember every Ukrainian city, whose heroism and resilience give a future to all who appreciate the most important thing - life ", Zelensky said.

Russian dictator Vladimir Putin signed a decree approving the updated concept of the country's foreign policy. In it, Russia is proclaimed "an original country-civilization" that protects the "Russian world". This was reported by the Kremlin press service.

"Dramatic changes in international life have required us to seriously adjust key strategic planning documents. Among them is the Foreign Policy Concept of the Russian Federation, which outlines the principles, tasks, and priorities of diplomatic activity," Putin said.

Among the key theses that are included in the new edition of the document are the following points:
1) The United States is named the main source of anti-Russian policy and "risks" for peace and human development;
2) Russia's main task in the 21st century is to turn Eurasia into a "single space of peace, stability and prosperity";
3) Russia is called the stronghold of the Russian world and "original country-civilization";
4) The priority of the foreign policy of the Russian Federation is "countering the campaign of Russophobia";
5) Relationships with friendly global power centers such as India and China are said to be of particular importance;
6) "Removing the vestiges of dominance" of the US and other unfriendly countries in world affairs will be one of the priorities of the Russian Federation;
7) The Russian Federation intends to "stop" the holding of "color revolutions" in its allied countries and partner countries.

It is noteworthy that Ukraine is mentioned only once in a large document - in the context of the fact that the United States used "the Ukrainian direction as a pretext for exacerbating anti-Russian policy."

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky met in Kyiv with congressmen from the US Republican Party.

During an evening address to the Ukrainians, he said that he had met with a delegation of the US House of Representatives from the Republican Party, headed by Chairman of the Standing Committee on Intelligence Mike Turner.

"I thanked for America's unfailing powerful help. To everyone - from President Biden, the White House team, to both houses of Congress and the entire system of American power," Zelensky said.

Separately, the head of state noted that he had met with former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. "Thank you to everyone who helps us defend freedom," Zelensky added.

The President added that the bicameral and bipartisan support of the United States, President Joe Biden, and the entire American people has played a decisive role in our state's ability to resist Russia in the war for its freedom and democratic values.

Subsequently, the Office of the President reported that during the meeting, Zelensky briefed the Congressional delegation on the situation on the front line and outlined a forecast for its development in the coming months.

He also emphasized the importance of the speedy transfer of already declared security support, noting the need to provide military equipment and weapons.

Former United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Russian President Putin recognizes only strength and determination.

During a visit to Kyiv, he said that the President of the Russian Federation should not be underestimated, writes Sky News. According to Pompeo, a new security architecture is needed to protect against major ground wars in Europe. "There should be a series of agreements that would clearly make it clear that Vladimir Putin will no longer be able to do this," he added.

Asked if he would support providing Ukraine with F-16 fighters and long-range missiles, Pompeo replied: “Yes, and training, and software, and everything that is needed to really protect your land.”

Lightness of opinion of Western experts
Putin knew perfectly well that he was starting a war, but he counted on the "special operation" banner to serve as a conceptual weapon, invisible to the public radar. He was wrong: the barbaric war started by Russia was condemned on a global scale, and Ukraine received the help it needed. However, at first, some influential voices declared that Ukraine is a failed state and something like an unfortunate nuisance that interferes in the affairs of real players. Superstition, ignorance and material interests appeared at this moment in all their glory.
Kyiv will fall tomorrow, said Christian Lindner, the powerful German finance minister, to Andrii Melnyk, the Ukrainian ambassador in Berlin, on the day of the Russian invasion, who tried to argue and then burst into tears. But within a few weeks, the same Lindner assured that Germany would never stop supporting Ukraine.
Adam Tuz, a famous economic historian from Columbia University, wrote in January 2022: "Ukraine is the target of Russian power not only because of its geographical location, but also because of the contradictions in Ukrainian politics, the selfishness of the elite, and economic incapacity." As for other countries, competition within the elite is called democracy — so why should the Ukrainian elite be monolithic?
As Tuz claimed, the growth dynamics of the Ukrainian economy in the post-Soviet decades was three times lower than the Russian one. He just forgot to mention that Russia's growth was fueled by fossil fuels that were polluting the world, and Ukraine's by the labor of its farmers and IT specialists. In the Anthropocene period, admiring the superiority of oil and gas revenues is a bit short-sighted. The fact that Russia demonstrated economic growth in the 21st century, while Ukraine managed it worse, does this fact confirm Russia's superiority, or, on the contrary, discredit the indicators by which growth is measured?
Katrina van den Heuvel, an influential publisher of The Nation magazine, admitted a week before the Russian invasion that "Ukraine is the closest in Europe to a failed state." According to her claims (which are not true), three American presidents refused to provide military support to Ukraine because "it was not worth defending."
Finally, van den Heuvel proposed concluding "an agreement that guarantees Ukraine sovereignty and independence in exchange for a guarantee of its neutrality." She forgot that Ukraine had already given up nuclear weapons and gained sovereignty three decades earlier — and all this was guaranteed by the US, Russia and other countries.

Prediction is a different genre than explanation, and prophets are different from scientists. During times of war, predictions materialize quickly enough for people to remember them and draw conclusions about their authors.
In January 2022, popular historian Neil Ferguson compared Putin to the founder of the Russian Empire, Peter I. Like Peter, Ferguson reasoned, Putin would win his own battle at Poltava, and Russia's imperial history "inspires the current Tsar Vladimir...". Ferguson understood Putin, who after a few months actually compared himself to Peter, but he could not understand his war. Ignoring Russia's economic and demographic problems and believing in its easy victory, Ferguson claimed that Ukraine "will not receive significant military support from the West." Like Peter, Putin will win his Poltava battle, Ferguson wrote: "Don't be surprised if [Putin's] victory parade takes place in Poltava itself."
But as the war wore on, Ferguson became disillusioned with Putin's other admirers. "The great difficulty in predicting the driving forces of history ... is that most catastrophes catch us by surprise," he wrote in late March. Be that as it may, the main thing is to confirm your historian patent again. "In the corridors of power, one speaks ... not in the language of economics and politics, but in the language of history," argued Ferguson. Now he predicted that Mariupol would fall in a few days, the Biden administration would not support Ukraine, and Putin would die his own death, as most Russian leaders have. As we already know, at least some of Ferguson's predictions did not come true, starting with the victory parade in Poltava.
In June 2022, University of Chicago professor John Mearsheimer argued that the reason for Putin's war was the threat posed by NATO: Ukraine's entry there would be an "existential" loss for Russia, which justified its actions. But in a month or two, the politicians themselves demonstrated the inability of such political realism.
Due to the fact that Putin started the war, Finland and Sweden decided to join NATO. With their entry, the Western alliance found itself much closer to the vital centers of Russia than if Ukraine had ever succeeded in getting its application approved. That the situation would almost certainly develop in this way could have been predicted by any "realist" - with the exception of Mearsheimer.
The future resembles a Rorschach test: people react to uncertainty by projecting their desires onto it. The future is unknown to neither experts nor prophets, but those who predict it reveal themselves. For experts, there is no worse mistake than making wrong predictions in wartime. This is how we learn about their desires, and these desires are ridiculous.
      This is an excerpt from a forthcoming book by Russian-born American historian Alexander Etkind
...

there are at least a few reasons:
1. Some analysts systematically took money from the Russians.
2. Other analysts have been writing articles and books about Russia for years and decades, and they are very uncomfortable admitting that they have been systematically and profoundly wrong. Similarly, in the first half of the 1980s, the best Sovietologists wrote books about the steadfastness of the USSR and the incredible stability of the communist system in the coming decades.
3. The third analysts are the most interesting - they are in the grip of the "evil green meme" mocked by Ken Wilber twenty years ago - a distortion of the worldview that allows you to see only a part of world processes.

President of the European Commission, Her Exellency Ursula von der Leyen speech on the occasion of the one-year anniversary of the liberation of Bucha: "When brave Ukrainians fiercely stopped the invader from advancing on Kyiv, they exposed a heinous truth. In Bucha, Russian soldiers had looted and burned homes, tortured, raped, and murdered innocent civilians. I was in Bucha after its liberation.
The barbarity of the attacks was palpable. The sight of mass graves and body bags lined up on the ground is etched forever in my memory. And so are the people behind the horrific stories.The young men with their hands tied behind their backs, shot in the head. The grandfather who was shot in the back while riding his bicycle. Not even women and children were spared.
One year on, it is clear: What happened in Bucha, was not a random episode. Those executions in cold blood were part of a bigger plan. Cruel, cynical, calculated. The Kremlin wants to eliminate Ukraine. Its statehood, its independence and democracy. And the Kremlin wants to eliminate Ukrainians: Their national identity. Their sense of being. Their history, and their hope in the future. These are war crimes. These are crimes against humanity. And the Bucha massacres have been replicated in other Ukrainian lands occupied by Russian forces.
Another target in Putin's plan is children. Ukraine says over 16.200 children have been abducted. They have been deported to Russia, Removed from their families and communities. Deprived of their childhood and their roots. This is yet another blatant attempt at erasing the Ukrainian identity. It is undeniable. It is unforgivable. And it is punishable. And so, for the first time in history, the International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant for a leader of a permanent member of the UN Security Council. By charging Putin, the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court has sent a clear message: there will be no escape for the perpetrator and his henchmen. War criminals will be held accountable for their deeds.
The European Union is working on the collection of evidence and bringing prosecutors together. We have also recently set up an International Coordination Centre for the Prosecution of the Crime of Aggression. This is done as part of the Joint Investigation Team in Eurojust and in which the ICC also participates.
And we will continue to spearhead efforts to make sure that Putin can be held accountable for the crime of aggression.To that end, we continue to support the creation of a dedicated tribunal if that's what it takes. This is for Ukraine and for every country's right to exist, to be free, and to write its own future. Not only do we want Russia's criminal plan to fail. We want justice for Ukraine and for Ukrainians. Slava Ukraini." - during Joint press conference by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, President of the European Council Charles Michel and President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
