The Ukrainian armed forces are preparing for the upcoming counter-offensive, despite the fact that the Western allies do not have time to replenish ammunition. At the same time, the Ukrainian authorities are optimistic about the long-awaited reconquest of the temporarily occupied territories.

However, according to The Times, Ukraine is not ready for the upcoming counteroffensive, but has no other choice.
https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/ukraine-isn-t-ready-for-its-big-offensive-but-it-has-no-choice-b7qrq3vcr

The journalists spoke with the British military, who are in contact with representatives of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. They said that the Ukrainians are very serious and are preparing to achieve great success during this operation.

According to media reports, US intelligence believes that the Ukrainian defenders are unlikely to achieve anything more than recapture a small part of the occupied territories. Despite the received armored vehicles, Ukraine does not have enough air defense systems, and therefore the aviation of the Russian Federation can feel more confident.

It is noted that Ukraine has no other choice but to launch a big spring or summer offensive. According to one Pentagon official, Ukrainians have surprised both Western allies and Putin in the past with their actions. However, now the Armed Forces of Ukraine have much less room to maneuver, and the occupiers know this.

According to the publication, most likely for a major offensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine some important target will be chosen - Melitopol or Donetsk. Russia is also aware of the possible options for the Ukrainian plan and is actively strengthening its position. The Russian military is building a defense system that will not be easy to overcome.

One of the problematic issues before the upcoming offensive of Ukraine is the supply of ammunition. It makes no sense to send a large amount of weapons without shells, bullets or missiles, which the Armed Forces of Ukraine spend with great speed. The Ukrainian army spends more than 155 mm of shells in a month than the United States produces in a year. Russia is also wasting more ammunition than it can handle.

The publication adds that although President Volodymyr Zelensky deftly managed the event to support the allies, Washington is now waiting for a "return on investment."

The Armed Forces of Ukraine drove the invaders out of the "Basin" near Bakhmut and showed a powerful assault on the enemy's positions.

The corresponding video was shown by StratCom of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Telegram. They noted that the enemy had been a "bone in the throat" for our defenders in this position for several months. Therefore, to knock out the invaders from the "Basin" was an important strategic task.

"The battle for every position in the Bakhmut direction has a huge impact on the defense of the eastern region. Bassin is no exception," they said.

The department clarified that it was possible to knock out the Russians thanks to the successful work of the scouts of the 28th Motorized Brigade, who worked together with aerial reconnaissance and mortarmen.

Despite the significant losses, russia has not abandoned its plans to occupy Ukrainian territory. The invaders target and shell military and civilian targets alike.
During the day of April 29, the adversary launched 7x missile and 39x air strikes, 50x MLRS attacks. The attacks have killed and wounded civilians, destroyed and damaged private residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure.
The likelihood of further missile and air strikes across Ukraine remains quite high.

It is unsafe in the temporarily occupied Sevastopol. The large-scale fire that broke out at an oil depot near Kozacha bay on April 29 destroyed 10x oil products tanks with a total capacity of about 40,000 tons. Because of that, panic rumors spread through the city about the inability of russian air defense to secure its own strategic facilities. In turn, apprehending the beginning of the so-called “hot holiday season” in the temporarily occupied Crimea, russian servicemen started to apply for vacations specifying the desired locations in mainland russia.
It is noteworthy that this oil depot provided fuel to the ships of the russian Black Sea Fleet, which launched missile strikes on cities of Ukraine. Civilians and civilian infrastructure were the targets of the russian terrorists. At the same time, according to the available information, there have been no casualties as a result of the fire at the oil depot.

Due to the Russian invasion in 2022, the poverty rate in Ukraine rose from 5.5% to 24.2%, as a result, more than 7 million people fell below the poverty line, as food, fuel, services and etc.

As reported by The Guardian, citing a World Bank report, the most tangible effects of impoverishment are recorded in rural areas, as there is a large gap between the city and the countryside.

With unemployment unofficially at 36% and inflation reaching 26.6% at the end of 2022, the institution's regional director for Eastern Europe, Arup Banerjee, warned that poverty could rise sharply.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/apr/30/ukraine-war-poverty-irpin-pawn-shops-bread-queues

Economist Elena Bilan noted that without financial support from the international community, the situation would have been even worse. According to her, the most problematic in this situation is the issue of employment of people.

“We are seeing a 30% drop in GDP mainly because Ukraine exports 80% of its goods through ports that it no longer has access to. We had inflation of 26% – again, which could be worse – but people’s wages also remained unchanged, and the currency depreciated against the dollar by 20%," she said.
Poverty level in Ukraine

In April 2022, the World Bank cut its global economic growth forecast for the current year by nearly a full percentage point to 3.2% from 4.1% due to the impact of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

On May 26, World Bank President David Malpass said that the war in Ukraine could trigger a global recession.

Russia itself could organize a UAV attack on the Kremlin on May 3 in order to create conditions for a broader mobilization of the population to the front.

This was stated by analysts at the Institute for the Study of War in a new report. According to them, several signs indicate that the strikes were organized and carried out by internal forces.

https://www.understandingwar.org/backgrounder/russian-offensive-campaign-assessment-may-3-2023

Russian authorities have recently been beefing up their air defenses, including in Moscow, experts say. In this regard, it is "highly unlikely" that two drones could penetrate several layers of air defense and explode or be shot down right "over the heart of the Kremlin", and at the same time get on cameras.

Geolocation images from January 2023 confirm that the Russian authorities deployed Pantsir anti-aircraft missile systems near Moscow to create air defense circles around the city.

"The Kremlin's immediate, consistent and coordinated response to the incident suggests that the attack was internally orchestrated in such a way that its perceived political implications outweighed the surprise," the report says.

As analysts recalled, the Kremlin failed to provide a timely and consistent informational response to other military humiliations, including the loss of the previously captured Balakliya and Kherson in September and November 2022.

"The quick and consistent presentation of the official Russian version of the strikes suggests that Russia staged this incident in close proximity to the May 9 Victory Day celebrations in order to present the war to its domestic audience as something existential," the material adds.

However, Moscow may use such an "attack" to justify the cancellation or further restriction of May 9 celebrations. It is also likely to reinforce the outreach that portrays the war against Ukraine as a direct threat to Russia's observance of "respectable historical events."

Analysts have previously reported that the Russian Federation is taking a series of measures to present its illegal war of conquest against Ukraine as existential to domestic audiences and prepare for broader social mobilization.

The Russian occupation troops placed military equipment and explosives in the turbine section of power unit No. 4 of the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP).

According to the State Inspectorate for Nuclear Regulation, these facts were announced by representatives of the IAEA during a weekly meeting on communication between the IAEA crisis center (IEC) and the State Nuclear Regulatory Agency regarding the activities of the IAEA mission at the Zaporozhye NPP site. It took place on Tuesday, May 2, 2023.

It is noted that at the end of July 2022, heavy military equipment with ammunition, as well as weapons and explosives, were placed in the engine room of ZNPP power unit No. 1. In August, information appeared about the placement of military equipment in the engine room of power unit No. 2 of the Zaporizhzhya NPP. In addition, through informal channels, the State Nuclear Regulatory Agency received information about the storage by Russian invaders of equipment, weapons and explosives in other production facilities of the Zaporozhye NPP, in particular, in mechanical repair shops and on the roofs of power units.

"The new criminal actions of the Russian occupiers are another step that causes significant damage to the nuclear and radiation safety of nuclear installations located at the industrial site of the Zaporozhye NPP. Inadequate decisions and actions of the Russian military endanger both the personnel of the nuclear power plant and residents of nearby settlements. Once again Once again, we emphasize that in the event of an emergency at the ZNPP with a potential release of radioactive substances into the environment, the consequences will be felt not only by Ukraine - they will be of a transboundary nature. Nuclear terrorism, which the Russian Federation resorts to, is an unacceptable phenomenon in the civilized world," - the message says.

Cyber experts of the Security Service of Ukraine exposed an interregional network of bot farms that spread disinformation to undermine the socio-political situation in Ukraine.

According to the press center of the SBU, first of all, the attackers tried to discredit the activities of the top military-political leadership of our state in the conditions of war. It is also noted that they spread false reports about terrorist attacks in Ukrainian cities and the "mining" of objects with a massive gathering of people.

The intelligence service informed that in order to "disperse" the fakes, anonymous accounts were created on the social networks Facebook, Instagram and Twitter with a total audience of almost 200 thousand users.

In particular, the SBU noted that as a result of a multi-stage special operation in different regions of Ukraine, 9 bot farms were neutralized and their organizers were exposed.

"Among them are active supporters of one of the domestic political forces. "Focuses" of disinformation operated in Ternopil, Poltava, Cherkasy, Sumy, Lviv, Chernivtsi, Kharkiv, Mykolaiv and Zakarpattia regions. or in office premises.During the searches, the malefactors were found to have: computer equipment with evidence of illegal activity; bank cards, on which they received money for information "stuffing", 5,000 SIM-cards of Ukrainian mobile operators; GSM gateways and other specialized equipment ", the message says.

Based on the collected evidence, the defendants are planned to be informed of suspicion under Art. 361 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (unauthorized intervention in the operation of electronic computers (computers), automated systems, computer networks or telecommunication networks).

An investigation is ongoing to establish all the circumstances of the crime and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Russia is preparing for an attack on NATO's underwater infrastructure. To do this, the country's leadership is studying the alliance's underwater systems, said David Kuttler, assistant secretary general of the bloc for intelligence and security. It is reported by Bloomberg.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-05-03/nato-warns-that-russia-is-mapping-eu-us-critical-assets

Russia is mapping critical allied infrastructure both on land and underwater, Kuttler said. So Moscow is preparing for attacks on underwater targets in Europe and North America. Russian military and special services are taking part in the operation, he added.

The Assistant Secretary General of NATO recalled that this is how Russia conducts hostilities in the early stages of the conflict - it seeks to destroy critical infrastructure. Moscow resorted to such tactics in the war with Ukraine.

Kuttler noted that we are talking about submarine cables, which account for 95% of Internet communications. With their help, financial transactions in the amount of about $ 10 trillion are carried out daily.
Subversive activities of the Russian Federation - details

An international group of investigative journalists has found evidence of a hidden presence of Russian ships near the sites of the explosion of the Nord Stream gas pipeline. It is noted that these were vessels that are capable of carrying out underwater operations.

Russian intelligence agencies have been Denmark's biggest threat for years and will continue to be a threat in the future, the country's police intelligence says in a new report.

Ukraine needs more than $400 billion to rebuild from the devastation caused by the war unleashed by Russia, President Volodymyr Zelensky said at a joint press conference with Dutch Prime Ministers Mark Rutte and Belgian Prime Minister Alexander de Croo in The Hague.

Zelensky recalled that the Russian invaders destroyed energy stations, a network of educational institutions, cultural centers and museums, churches and various infrastructure facilities. The President of Ukraine noted that there is still a problem with the current legislation in other countries regarding the confiscation and transfer of Russian frozen assets to be used for the restoration of Ukraine.

Belgium announced its intention to transfer frozen Russian assets to Ukraine in the amount of 58 billion euros, and, as Zelessky noted, these funds are not enough to restore.

"Because, even according to a recent World Bank estimate, we need more than 400 billion. These are real statistics. But we do not know what is happening in the temporarily occupied territories, what is the level of destruction there," Zelensky said.

He added that Ukraine is asking the allied countries and the European Commission to find a mechanism that will allow the transfer of frozen Russian assets to Ukraine.

The Russian occupiers still have the resources to continue the war. In particular, the aggressor country has a stock of equipment, although it is already outdated for the most part.

"The enemy, unfortunately, still has reserves and has the ability to replenish them, but every day our heroic soldiers are doing everything to reduce this reserve," Serhiy Cherevaty, speaker of the eastern group of troops of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, said on the air of the telethon.

According to him, after the successful counter-offensive operations of the Ukrainian forces, in particular in the Kharkiv region, a lot of the latest enemy equipment was captured. Now, in many directions, the Russian army is forced to use outdated BMP-1, BTR-60, T-62 tanks and the like.

"Our year of struggle and destruction of enemy equipment affects its combat potential, but in quantitative terms, unfortunately, although it is somewhat outdated equipment, it still has," the speaker of the Armed Forces of Ukraine added.

He stressed that Bakhmut remains the main target of the invaders. In this direction they concentrate their main attacking efforts. Over the past day, the Russians attacked the positions of Ukrainian defenders in the Bakhmut area 19 times, carried out 229 attacks and two air raids.

At the same time, the defense forces destroyed 133 invaders, another 166 were wounded. In addition, the Pantsir anti-aircraft missile system, three electronic warfare stations, two self-propelled guns, two howitzers, an infantry fighting vehicle and eight field ammunition depots were destroyed.

Today, May 5, a rare penumbral lunar eclipse will take place. Residents of most of Europe, including Ukraine, Africa, Asia and Australia, will be able to watch it.

A penumbral eclipse occurs when only the outer shadow of the Earth, the penumbra, falls on the Moon. Therefore, it is considered incomplete. However, it is especially rare - the next such event is expected as early as 2042.
When will the lunar eclipse in Ukraine

Residents of Ukraine will be able to watch the lunar eclipse today, May 5. The blackout will last 4 hours and 18 minutes. The beginning is expected at 17:14, and the eclipse will last until 21:31 Kyiv time.

The peak of the eclipse will take place at 19:22 - at this time it will be possible to see that part of the lunar disk that is in partial shade.

The founder of PMC "Wagner" Yevgeny Prigozhin complains about the lack of ammunition and the colossal losses among his militants.

He published in the Telegram channel "Prigozhin's Press Service" a video with dozens of corpses of his mercenaries who died in battle on May 4, and swore at Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chief of the General Staff Vasily Gerasimov.   https://t.me/concordgroup_official/895

"We have a shortage of ammunition, 70%. Shoigu, Gerasimov, where the fuck ammo?!" - Shouts Prigogine.

Putin's cook remembered the children of Russian officials who have a rest in "expensive clubs" and also shoot videos on YouTube. He probably hinted at his daughter Shoigu, who went to Dubai on vacation in January.

“Think about the fact that if you have warehouses of shells, then you have the right to do so. There are elementary calculations - if you give the norm of ammunition, there are five times fewer of them (the dead - UNIAN). They came here as volunteers and die for what you chewed in your mahogany cabinets. Keep that in mind," the head of Wagner PMC added.
Losses of "Wagner" in the war and "shell hunger"

Prigozhin has repeatedly complained about the lack of ammunition, each time blaming the military leadership of the Russian Federation.

At the same time, the Armed Forces of Ukraine stated that the "shell hunger" of the occupiers is felt only in some directions, while in the other - the "Wagnerites" are actively shelling.

As UNIAN reported, the Wagner PMC is now preparing for a "hellish" attack of the Armed Forces of Ukraine near Bakhmut, Donetsk region.

Earlier, Prigozhin published a short story about how the Russians started "this good special operation", but got "f*cked" in many directions. According to him, the militants capture 100 meters of territory, but lose 94 "Wagnerites".

"Hypersonic" Kh-47 "Kynzhal" was successfully shot down by the Armed Forces of Ukraine: a photo of the wreckage and an explanation of the cause of the strong explosion on the night of May 4 over Kyiv

The possibility of shooting down these missiles with the help of Patriot was under question.

b7a6454b4dd5da7c.jpg

For the first time, Ukraine used the Patriot systems received from its partners to shoot down an enemy ballistic target - the Dagger missile, writes Defense Express, which received a photo of its wreckage.

On the night of May 4, in the sky over Kyiv, as reported by the Kyiv City Military Administration, in addition to enemy Shahed kamikaze drones, there were also "probably ballistic-type" missiles. According to the photo of the wreckage that fell on the stadium in the capital, the experts established that the downed missile was the Kh-47 "Dagger". They note that the wreckage shows that he was defeated with a penetration, which indicates that the interception was quite effective - with the destruction of the combat unit while still in the air.

This shooting also debunks the myth of the Russian occupiers that the "Dagger" is a "hypersonic" missile.

"Dagger" is hypersonic only in the fantasies of rasists. Because, although it accelerates to hypersonic speeds due to the accelerator, it cannot maintain such a speed constantly. Already in the terminal section, that is, during the attack, it enters the target along a ballistic trajectory and has, although high, but far from hypersonic speed. And Ukraine has already officially received means that can fight ballistic targets - Patriot, and obviously has successfully used them," the experts explain.

Patriot for Ukraine - what you need to know

At the end of December 2022, during the visit of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi to the United States of America, it became known about Washington's plans to transfer the Patriot anti-aircraft missile system to Ukraine. Later, Germany and the Netherlands announced plans to transfer them.

In April, the first three complexes arrived in Ukraine. By the end of the month, two Patriot divisions went on combat duty.

b6a6454b682e50d6.jpg

One of the photos shows the nose fairing, which is as similar as possible to the one used in the Kh-47 "Dagger" missile with a complex shape of sharp diameter transitions.

An alternative in the form of the X-22 has a different nose part, with oval transitions. Also, the fairing of the downed missile, recorded in the photo, differs from the "Iskander" OTRK ballistic missile, which is "thicker".

The wreckage shows that it suffered a puncture wound, which allows us to estimate the thickness of the material that is required to withstand the high temperature during acceleration to hypersonic speed. And also indicates that the interception was quite effective with the destruction of the combat unit while still in the air.

The powerful explosion heard by the people of Kyiv on the night of May 4 is related to this.

Regarding the report that the ballistic target was destroyed, the fact is that the "Dagger" is hypersonic only in the fantasies of the Rashists. Because although it accelerates to hypersonic speeds due to the accelerator, it cannot maintain such a speed constantly. Already in the terminal area, that is, during the attack, it enters the target along a ballistic trajectory and has, although high, but far from hypersonic speed.

On the night of May 8, Russian invaders attacked the Kyiv region with Iranian-made Shahed-136/131 attack drones.

This is discussed in the message of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. "35 strike UAVs were used, which attacked from the northern direction - the Sescha airfield (Bryansk region)," the report says.

They noted that the air command "Center" of the Air Force, in cooperation with the components of the Defense Forces of Ukraine, destroyed all 35 "Shahed-136/131" with the forces and means of air defense.

Also, at about midnight, the Russian invaders attacked the Odessa region from Tu-22M3 long-range bombers. A total of 8 launches were carried out from the area of Cape Tarkhankut (occupied Crimea).

"Some of the missiles did not reach their targets. The local military administration will report on the consequences of the hits," the Air Force said.
