Ukraine - Russia's perfidious attack, a chronicle of events

The 11th round of EU sanctions against Russia will hit the so-called "shadow" tanker fleet, which helps the aggressor country bypass Western oil sanctions. This was written by the American publication Politico, whose journalists managed to get acquainted with the sanctions documents.

It is noted that the 11th package of sanctions, as previously expected, will not introduce new restrictions, but will focus on eliminating loopholes in existing restrictions. In particular, secondary sanctions will be introduced with which the EU will punish companies that help Russia.

“Attempts to circumvent the restrictive measures of the Union have led to a sharp increase in the fraudulent activities of ships carrying Russian oil and petroleum products,” the EU sanctions documents say.

European officials are concerned about the "shadow fleet" of hundreds of old tankers carrying Russian oil, bypassing the established price ceiling. The ultimate owners of these vessels are not easy to determine, as their ownership structure is hidden behind a network of front companies, many of which are reportedly linked to Greece.

To hide deliveries of Russian oil at prices above the permitted ceiling, these tankers turn off transponders (ship tracking systems) before entering Russian ports, or pump Russian oil from other tankers directly into the sea.

The European Commission proposes to ban tankers suspected of this shady practice from entering EU ports "regardless of their registration flag." Also, tankers will be required to inform the authorities about plans to reload oil from ship to ship "at least 48 hours in advance."

According to S&P's "conservative" analysis, a total of 167 tankers were seen transshipping oil from a Russian vessel and then moored in an EU port.

Previously, Greece, Cyprus and Malta opposed the suppression of such practices, a significant share of the economy of which falls on maritime transport.

The Ukrainian counter-offensive "hadn't even started in earnest." It's too early to judge its success.

A high-ranking Ukrainian official spoke about this in a commentary for CNN. Thus, the interlocutor of the publication denied the information that Western officials were disappointed with the successes of the Ukrainian army during the counteroffensive.

"It's too early to assess the overall trajectory of the counteroffensive. The main thrust of the counteroffensive hasn't even started in earnest yet," the official said.

He also noted that "formation operations" are still ongoing, and a counteroffensive can only be judged in autumn or winter.

If the Ukrainian counteroffensive fails, the US authorities could force Kyiv to negotiate.

Such actions by the American authorities are possible against the background of the upcoming elections in the United States and the difficulties of explaining the constant support of Ukraine, according to an article by the German tabloid Bild.

The horror scenario, which is also playing out behind closed doors in Ukraine, looks like this: if the offensive fails despite Western armaments, US pressure, in particular on Ukraine, to talk about negotiations may increase.

The International Atomic Energy Agency does not confirm the information about the mining of the cooling pond of the ZNPP, thereby denying the threat of detonation, which Ukrainian intelligence warns about. According to military analyst Oleksiy Hetman, the Russian Federation is preparing to accuse Ukraine of a possible detonation of the station, and the IAEA can help it directly in this.

On Thursday, June 22, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi said that, according to Ukrainian intelligence and the SBU, Russia is considering a scenario of a terrorist attack on the Zaporizhia NPP with a release of radiation. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), for its part, reported that no mines were found at the station itself, including the cooling pond. According to their information, only the perimeter of the nuclear power plant was mined.

The Director General of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, explained that the analysis carried out by the agency showed that the presence of an explosive device in the specified places did not meet safety standards. However, he noted that the facility's main security functions will not be significantly affected.

According to the military analyst, Reserve Major Oleksii Hetman, the IAEA's statement may indicate that Russia is planning to accuse Ukraine of a possible blow-up of the Zaporizhzhia NPP, and the agency's analysis of this kind will help them a lot in this.

Grossi and Putin

"If the IAEA were to take a neutral position, it would be at least surprising, because the seizure of the Zaporizhzhya NPP by the Russians and the mining of even the perimeter of the plant is terrorism. It turns out that the IAEA is very loyal to Russia," Hetman tells Focus.

According to the military analyst, it is worth paying attention to two important points: firstly, the Russian Mykhailo Chudakov remains one of the deputy directors of the agency, as before. This in itself calls into question the impartiality of the international commission. Secondly, the IAEA clearly ignores the principle "not to enter into negotiations with terrorists", the expert adds.

"Grossi went to a meeting with Putin to discuss how to guarantee the safety of the plant. But who did they want to secure it from? Probably from Ukraine. It is simply wild when the head of the agency that monitors the safety of the nuclear power plant goes to a meeting with the head of state, which seized this station to discuss its preservation," continues Hetman.

The IAEA's latest statement about the absence of mines at the ZNPP itself once again demonstrates the agency's position in the current situation. By announcing the absence of a threat and at the same time emphasizing that the perimeter of the station is still mined, Grossi is sending a message to the world community that the Russians are allegedly trying to preserve the Zaporizhzhia NPP, according to the Focus interlocutor.

"If the plant is really blown up, then, I am sure, Ukraine will be blamed for this. They will refer to the conclusion of the IAEA commission, which clearly states that the cooling pond of the ZNPP was not mined, and the explosives around the perimeter are "protection against Ukrainian offensive". This report agencies is nothing more than informational preparation for accusations. Not just small hints, but sure steps in this direction," says a military analyst.

Ukraine should start preparing for such a possible scenario — strengthen the diplomatic work of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and think about how to prevent informational provocation of this kind. Otherwise, according to Hetman, we will have to prove for a long time that Ukraine is not behind the catastrophe at the Zaporizhia NPP.

Even if Russia decides to blow up part of the Zaporizhzhya NPP, the threats from Moscow will not stop, Hetman insists.

"After that, they can threaten to blow up the Crimean Titan plant in occupied Armeniansk, that is, their nuclear blackmail will not stop. On the contrary, now the Russian Federation is increasing the degree of threats. If earlier they tried to blackmail Ukraine with tactical nuclear weapons, now they use in their rhetoric the possibility of using intercontinental ballistic nuclear missile. And this threat is directed not so much at Ukraine or the European countries located nearby, but directly at the USA," Hetman explains.

According to him, the Russian president understands that he will lose the war. For him, it will turn out to be not only a political end, but death in the literal sense of the word. Therefore, he tries to threaten everything that is in Russia's arsenal.

The Hetman suggests that blowing up the Zaporizhia NPP is not expedient from a military point of view. Moreover, it will primarily affect the Russian troops, since they will have to immediately go deep into the Crimea.

On February 24, Russia launched a large-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Russian troops are shelling and destroying key infrastructure facilities,

conducting massive shelling of residential areas of Ukrainian cities and villages.

I am in the capital of Ukraine, the city of Kyiv.
I do not leave the city, I follow what is happening here, reassure my family and friends, explain the situation and follow the press reports.

A lot of panic messages, a lot of fake news from Russian propaganda.
I select only the information that has confirmation.
As a former military man (in the distant past), I have a good understanding of how hostilities are conducted and what weapons are used.

I will answer all your questions.

Since February 24, Russia has attacked Ukraine, many cities of Ukraine have been destroyed.

Because of the war, I lost my business in Ukraine, if you want to help me and my family,

On the night of June 26, 2023, the Russian invaders attacked Ukraine mainly from the south.

The forces and means of air defense of the "Southern" air command destroyed two "Kalibr" cruise missiles and 7 "Shaheed" type attack UAVs.
In addition, the enemy attacked from the north with four unmanned aerial vehicles of an unknown type (probably attack). All drones were destroyed in the area of responsibility of the Center air command.

As Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin acknowledged, the Americans who were arming and training Ukrainian forces for this campaign were hoping to see "overwhelming success." Why Ukraine was not more effective remains unclear. No one has yet explained why Ukraine waited so long to begin attack."

Graham Allison is the Douglas Dillon professor of government at Harvard University.

The extraordinary coup attempt by a Russian mercenary leader provides Ukraine with an unexpected opportunity to press whatever advantages it has in its war with Moscow. If it does not seize this chance and break the stasis that governs the battlefield in eastern Ukraine, we will enter a very different chapter in this conflict.

“No Ukraine, you can’t have long-range artillery or modern aviation. It’s called E-S-C-A-L-A-T-I-O-N. Tanks? Okay, but not all of them and not on time for the coming offensive.”
*Several months later*
“Why Ukraine has not been more effective remains uncertain.”

Because of the war, I lost my business in Ukraine, if you want to help me and my family, my Paypal is: Alex.Sor.2022@gmail.com

Raytheon Calls in Retirees to Help Restart Stinger Missile Production

The shoulder-fired missile is one of the weapons that’s been credited with getting Ukraine through the early days of the Russian invasion.

...

Raytheon has called in retired engineers to teach its employees how to build the Stinger missiles heavily used by Ukraine’s military—using blueprints drawn up during the Carter administration.

It’s the latest example of a private company working to ramp up production of a now-in-demand weapon that the Pentagon hasn’t purchased in decades.

“Stinger's been out of production for 20 years, and all of a sudden in the first 48 hours [of the war], it's the star of the show and everybody wants more,” Wes Kremer, the president of RTX’s Raytheon division, said during an interview last week at the Paris Air Show.

Ukraine’s top general, Valery Zaluzhny, wants shells, planes and patience

KYIV, Ukraine — For Ukraine’s counteroffensive to progress faster, Gen. Valery Zaluzhny, the top officer in Ukraine’s armed forces, says he needs more — of every weapon. And he is telling anyone who will listen, including his American counterpart, Gen. Mark A. Milley, as recently as Wednesday, that he needs those resources now.

In a rare, wide-ranging interview with The Washington Post, Zaluzhny expressed frustration that while his biggest Western backers would never launch an offensive without air superiority, Ukraine still has not received modern fighter jets but is expected to rapidly take back territory from the occupying Russians. American-made F-16s, promised only recently, are not likely to arrive until the fall — in a best-case scenario.

...If we draw all aspects of current war and international relations on one big sheet of paper, and then look for the narrowest point on which everything depends (the "bottleneck," Goldratt's key system constraint), we will eventually find it.
This will be the Moscow-centrism of the American establishment.
For a number of reasons, Americans are looking for the keys to understanding the past, present and future of the USSR and the Russian Federation exclusively in Moscow.
Considering the one-dimensional model "power in Moscow is consolidating -- power in Moscow is falling apart", they do not see other scenarios, but only these two. Collapse is more frightening than Stalinization and the continuation of the war. And this means that in the conditions of the threat of the collapse of the Russian Federation, the USA will be more inclined to strengthen the Kremlin regime, which is considered a lesser evil.
Prigozhin greatly shortened the time, sharpening the understanding that Putin's regime is really weak. We came close to a critical point.
Our allies want our victory, but at the same time they fear it. After all, they see our victory exclusively as the collapse of the Russian Federation, and this is unacceptable. Therefore, they are looking for a middle point, when the Russian Federation did not lose completely, and we did not win completely. Therefore, they limit supplies so that the defeat of the Russian Federation is not complete. It doesn't matter how many Ukrainians die because of it. War will eventually return, but it will be later. Now the main thing for them is to prevent collapse.
First, this is a road to nowhere.
Second, this is a mistake. This is the same mistake that was made in 1991, when the USA tried with all its might to save the USSR, which was already impossible to save. For those who don't remember 1991, look for Chicken Kyiv Speech. And in 1917, the Entente tried to preserve the unity of Russia, which became one of the two reasons for the defeat of our great-grandfathers.
The FSB managed to mislead everyone about the fact that there are no nations, all of them have long since disappeared and been Russified, there are no national elites and aspirations for freedom. It was easy to deceive the Americans, because they were already Moscow-centric, but it was possible to deceive a significant part of the Ukrainians.
Operating with a one-dimensional model, Americans see only two bad scenarios. They ignore the third decolonization/deimperialization scenario because it does not fit into their worldview. And they are not ready to give up their picture of the world, no matter how many lives it costs.
The worst thing for Americans is that in both scenarios they see (Stalinization and collapse), China wins. As if everything was done correctly, and the main geopolitical rival wins in all scenarios? So something is wrong with the basic assumptions.
The fate of the Russian Federation will not be decided in Moscow, just like in 1991.
What shall I do? Use every opportunity to explain to the Americans the falsity of Moscow-centrism and the inadmissibility of repeating the mistakes of 1917 and 1991. First of all, Ukraine itself must have a strategy for the Russian Federation, and then convince our allies of its correctness.
In order to win, you don't need to drag history to your side. You just have to stand on the side of history, ride the inevitable trends.
We are hindered by our false stereotypes, our inability to think long-term strategically.
This time, Ukraine is paying such a price that it simply cannot afford to lose.

A day of mourning has been declared in the city of Sumy today for the victims of a Russian UAV attack on a residential high-rise building in the city center.

According to the Sumy Regional Administration, as a result of the drone attack, three people died (yesterday at 22:00, rescuers pulled out the body of a woman from the rubble), another 21 people were injured.

They expressed their condolences to the families and friends of the victims. "We pray for the wounded to recover. We believe in the Armed Forces of Ukraine! We endlessly believe! And in victory! And in a peaceful future - without worries, fear and enemies on our land," the Sumy Regional Administration noted.

As added by the mayor of the city of Sumy Alexander Lysenko, four people remain in hospitals as a result of yesterday's enemy attack.

Impact on the center of the city of Sumy

On July 3 at 11:06 a.m., the Ukrainian Air Force announced an air alert in Sumy, Zaporozhye and Dnipropetrovsk regions. They warned about the likelihood of the Russian invaders using attack UAVs.

Two hours later, the sounds of explosions were heard in Sumy, after which it became known that a Russian drone had hit a residential five-story building in the city center. Initially, one death was reported as a result of the impact. All relevant services worked at the impact site. Currently, search and rescue operations are still ongoing.

During the counteroffensive in the south, the Armed Forces of Ukraine are facing a number of serious problems, in particular, the Russian occupiers heavily mined the territory.

The opponents have been preparing for attacks for several months, very dense minefields have been created, a senior sergeant of the 47th brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine with the call sign "Legion" told CNN. According to him, he had never seen so many mines in all his years of service.

The fighter added that the minefields are so dense that only "tree by tree" can move. The warrior stressed that the enemies are also actively using aircraft and artillery. The officer noted that the fighting in the south is now similar to "what happened in Bakhmut during the hottest period."

"They knew that it was in this area that the main attack would take place, so they prepared carefully. They have artillery and aviation here, both fighter jets and helicopters work regularly," the source said.

The 500 richest people in the world increased their wealth by $852 billion in the first half of 2023.

Each member of the Bloomberg Billionaires Index has earned an average of $14 million a day over the past six months, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. This has been the best half year for billionaires since the second half of 2020, as the economy rebounded from the Covid-fueled downturn.

Capital gains coincided with a broad stock market rally as investors brushed off the effects of central bank rate hikes, the ongoing war in Ukraine and the crisis in regional banks, the report said. The S&P 500 is up 16% and the Nasdaq 100 is up 39% in its best first half as investor mania for artificial intelligence spurred tech stocks.

Tesla Inc CEO Elon Musk came out on top in the rankings. Musk, the richest man in the world, has increased his net worth by $96.6 billion this year through June 30, and the CEO of Meta Platforms Inc. Zuckerberg received $58.9 billion.

Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani's capital fell the most in a six-month period, losing $60.2 billion. Adani also posted its biggest single-day loss, losing about $20.8 billion on Jan. 27 after Hindenburg Research accused his conglomerate of accounting fraud and stock manipulation, a claim Adani denies.

Hindenburg, founded by Nate Anderson, also wiped out another billionaire's fortune: Carl Icahn. His Icahn Enterprises LP suffered its sharpest one-day drop after Hindenburg revealed he was selling shares, saying the shares were significantly overvalued compared to his holdings. Icahn's net worth fell $13.4 billion, or 57%, the biggest percentage drop of any member of the Bloomberg Billionaires Index during this period.

For Musk, the wealth surge spilled over into July, with Tesla shares rising 6.9% on Monday, July 3, in New York, adding an additional $13 billion to his net worth.
