Brothers Vilgalys Spirits
You can buy them individually from a bunch of other resellers who register codes through GS1. I used http://www.nationwidebarcode.com/ but there's plenty of options. Registering through GS1 is necessary for a few larger retailers (WalMart, Kroger), but for most places it doesn't matter. For our first bottle we just went with gs1. Just wanted to make sure I made the right call. For those who are running codes on their shipping packages, Im assuming they are different then the code on your bottle correct(IE the code on our 750ML wont be the same as the container we use to ship our 750s correct)? I know the thread linked explains it but the wording was a bit different and I just want to confirm. Were having our boxes done up so thats the next thing to get a code on it. Sherman
www.codeupc.net is a great deal and you can register them at http://www.upcdatabase.com. I have my enzymes all coded this way as an amazon requirement. Haven't got them on there yet but working on it.

When you sign up with GS1, you get to log into their web interface and create bar codes. After you've created a product code, you can use that product code to create a case code. Which is indeed a different bar code. We add them to the case box with a sticker.
cbenoit
I think some ABC store systems may require you to register with GS1 so that you can get a Company Prefix # as part of your GTIN. I gather it's the same with Wal-Mart. When I was thinking about the number of bar codes needed (e.g., need a new one if you change label, or do any change that the customer would perceive) plus bar codes for cases, it didn't seem worth it to just order one-off bar codes. May as well join and get the Company Prefix and a large allotment.
Mash
Because I sell to the Virginia ABC they require a case code, so the other codes I purchased was a waste. Glad it was only $56. I now get to join another organization with big dues.
Jedd Haas
Mash, are you referring to http://www.nabca.org/States/Forms.aspx as the organization with big dues? I recall this thread, http://adiforums.com/index.php?showtopic=2780 in which some other members stated they bought codes individually, without joining NABCA. Or did you purchase from a 3rd party vendor? I don't know that your other codes are a waste. It appears there are some control states that want both the control number(s) and the GS1 case code. joefreas
I just used NationwideBarcode.com and it worked great. Was able to download the UPC instantly and Emailed it off to my graphic designer.

FrEwing
Clarifying the dues issue re: NABCA. I'm in Virginia and have to use a NABCA code on the cases sold to the VA ABC. NABCA will establish an NABCA case code for each of your products at a price of $75 each. Buy 1 or buy more it's $75 each and they do it in two days. Easy folks to work with as well. There is no requirement to join the organization. Hope this helps.
