  1. 20% is given the 'beer exemption' even though beer vapors can be ignited at temps over 140F... NFPA 30-9.1.4 (5)
  2. and down again.... am I just that unlucky? yes, I tried specifically putting in the https and I used 3 differrent browsers Bad RequestYour browser sent a request that this server could not understand. 3. Thanks Dave, that is what I was thinking, but when you say it that way, it makes total sense...
  4. What things would be typically near the 400 range? Are any oils or other things that come over in distillation ever considered 'solids', such as those found in a gin or a vapor infused flavored vodka?
  5. I want to get a jump on my sprinkler install by having my electrician wire up the panel, anyone have experience on the location? Also, the panel docs I read say not to mount on an exterior masonry wall due to condensation, but the GSM communicator signal will likely be best on such a wall... I would prefer the gift shop, it is climate controlled, but it is excluded from DSP premises per TTB... If you have specific knowledge or experience in location of fire sprinkler control panels, I would appreciate your input! -mike
  6. bumping this, Troy is a great guy and makes really great rum!
  7. IMHO, a distiller that knew all that would know you chances of getting a DSP approved, AHJ approval, and insurance obtained in a hotel is slim to none..... Add in HVHZ hurricane requirements for locations such as yours and mine, and slim walks away pretty quick... Additionally, a distillery of the size that can actually make enough spirits to pay a master distiller will have to be high-hazard... not many business plans work out for less than 120gal of flammable liquids... High hazard separation requirements will be extremely difficult in a historic building. It would also be large enough to need separate people for most of those tasks... Finally, if you open not in a hotel, say a standalone building nearby, I suggest an employee ownership option path also,as a master distiller would likely look at this set of specifics and know that as soon as you get your recipes and reporting down, their days are numbered... I hope I am not offending, it is not my intent, and I am only an apprentice distiller who recently opened a distillery that I operate myself... -mike
  8. especially when you are in a nosing class ;-)
  9. I am less afraid of an open flame still than I am of people leaving the still alone or using questionable still construction practices that let vapor leaks happen... No one will admit the former, and the latter will force us in the direction of someday having to have our stills certified and inspected similar to steam boilers. Say goodbye to anything but very high priced stills.... An open flame still in a well ventilated area and that has no significant vapor leaks is perfectly safe... then again a simple 20%LEL detector connected to the fuel valve solves the explosion issue...
  10. Barrel exemption does not exempt barrels from sprinklers, alarms, or 1 hour separation, it does exempt them from ventilation, spill control, and explosion control... This is due to the Building Code and Fire Code inter-relationship more than just the fire code alone... it is not something you can determine from one paragraph in one code. Hire a fire code consultant if you want to get the least effort and cost to be legal.... Now... we have all seen places in excess of the MAQ with and without lots of barrels, without sprinklers... that is 100% on the AHJ, so don't expect a distillery in or not in your same jurisdiction to go to bat for you when you want a lax interpretation of the codes...
  11. anyone have pictures of this vendome solution?
  12. no one mentioned Primera? a few friends have the AP362 and really like it... I googled and found a video, it is what I plan on getting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eZqXJQkGag
  13. OK, 1 hour 45 minutes on hold Monday at 8am... I was staying home that day, so I took a shower, got dressed, had coffee, all while on hold... I have to give thanks to the TTB, they at least answer the phone.... Problem resolved, it seems I used to be able to log in with my email and correct password, now I must log in with my userid (3 letters and 5 digits), the rep reset my password before I had a chance to stop her, but I am sure my old one would have worked if I was told to use the 3+5 instead of my email as the username. so, look up your 3+5 userid, and give that a try....
  14. I am getting reminders to renew my food facility registration, but have been unable to get to a live person via the number they provide 301-575-015 (opt 3), I waited an hour and a half on hold, which is unacceptable. They do not respond to emails to furls@fda.gov (other than an automated acknowledgement that they got the email). My password works for login, but the page redirect just hangs. I try an incorrect password and it informs me that I used an incorrect password, so my password works. I have tried several computers, 3 different browsers, allowed all pop-ups, cleared cache, etc... Anyone else having issues renewing a food facility registration? -mike
  15. FYI - the listed thermometers seem to have gone end-of-life (maybe due to the mercury?) I found these to be what I would replace with: the 20476: H-B Instrument # 3/4124 30 to 124°F DURAC Plus Partial Immersion Liquid-in-Glass Thermometer, with a NIST Traceable Calibration Certificate Novatech B60205-0700 $261.20 the 20470: H-B Instrument # 6/1124 30 to 124°F DURAC Plus Precision Glass Thermometer Novatech B60730-1300 $65.26
  16. Old thread, thought I would add a good experience.. filled out an online request at masterlock website, requesting key retaining, no numbers on keys(no bitting data) and laser etched logo.. the order was forwarded to Hodge products ( hpionline.com ), and rep Camie answered all my questions and sent me a proof of the etching before ordering was complete.. a couple weeks to receive locks... very happy... got 7 series 6850 locks for ~$160 shipped... the laser etching is really deep and will not wear off...
  17. March 13th to 9:31AM today, May 19th.. even with a couple back and forths explaining a few things on the drawing and changing the bonded area, 67 days... Now for state and COLA.. and final fire marshal approval for final occupancy.. Cotherman Distilling Co. is ALIVE!
  18. I was in the website Friday afternoon, but have not been able to get in since Friday evening... I looked at Google's cache of reported maintenance windows and did not see one... http://www.isitdownrightnow.com/ttb.gov.html The fact that a $10,000,000,000 a year in revenue agency cannot keep a website up is a little disappointing...
  19. OK, so there are no sessions like the most awesome Corsair smoked whiskey thing that was during normal session times that required sign-up?
  20. you could always transfer from barrel to tank outside the building if you have a bonded area outside that is secure...
  21. how do we sign up for breakout sessions? I have dropped over $3k to travel accross the country and cannot see where we sign up fro anythign but workshops!
  22. are you having him make you a steam-powered still , or you are thinking the still boiler counts as a pressure vessel? (it does not, just have a port with a gauge to show it, and an open port with a pressure relief or a tube stuck into a bucket of water to prove to them that it could never become pressurized...)
  23. I suggest making a trip to Boulder, CO and visiting Roundhouse spirits.. buy a bottle or two, and he will tell you how his two open fired alembic stills came into operation...
  24. Title says it all, the 30/120 gallon MAQ's are for Mercantile occupancies, just wanted to see if anyone was able to open as a Mercantil occupancy with the still as an incidental operation. -mike
