  10. Are there any specific requirements or limitations on the shipping method when doing a transfer in bond? I understand the permits and reporting associated with a transfer in bond and have received spirits, but have never shipped full barrels. Can this be done LTL? Full tuck load? What about a rental truck or personal vehicle? Is there a section that discusses the requirements or limitations?

  13. Great feedback @dhdunbar I really appreciate it! Hopefully this will help all future NC distillers, because it is confusing and often misunderstood.
  14. Specifically I was looking to see if I was paying my excise tax too early when transferring to the North Carolina ABC warehouse. The commissioner of the ABC was surprised when I said that I pay federal tax when it leaves my distillery. In his mind we still own it. We also had to get a TTB permit where we are set up as a "wholesaler" with their warehouse address. However, I just checked this permit and it is not an extension of our DSP and from what I can tell only allows us to store tax-paid product as if we were a liquor distributor. So in this case I am paying tax at the correct time. If I had my own off-site storage, sounds like I would just need to extend my DSP and bond to include that space and then no TIB would be needed.
  15. Say you own a distillery and a warehouse down the street for storing finished/bottled product. When you transfer from your bonded distillery to your bonded warehouse would you need to submit an application for transfer in bond to the ttb? It would be leaving one bonded area, but then arriving at another bonded area owned by the same entity. Same question for barrels. When you barrel at the distillery and ship off-site for aging does any paper-work need to be submitted? Another way to look at it. Is a Transfer-In-Bond only required when transferring ownership from one entity to another?
  16. Okay I saw a number of 5 PG / bushel being tossed around. I assume this is only valid for corn. Does anyone have any ball park numbers on wheat or rye? They can be in any units. I can convert them. We recently started distilling rye whiskey and our yield is about 70% of what we typically get for our bourbon. Is that typically or is it possible that we are not getting full conversion?
  17. As long as the pumps are correctly sized you would not need any return pumps. The piping system will be under pressure and you just need to do a pressure drop calculation and elevation gain (from holding tank liquid level to return nozzle elevation) to determine where your pump will operate on the curve (flowrate). Hope this helps.
  18. Thanks to everyone that submitted a resume. We had some great candidates and filled the position with someone we found through the forums.
  19. Maybe the label should say: Milled, mashed, fermented, distilled, barreled, proofed, bottled by That should about cover it....
  20. All this talk of enzymes lately has got me wondering how everyone adjusts their mash pH. We use powdered citric acid, but I'm not sure it is the best or most economical approach. Have other people had good success using phosphoric or lactic acid? What about sulfuric or hydrochloric?
  21. Yes. The position actually just became available again today. Our lead candidate fell through. Was just now coming on here to post an update. Perfect timing. If you are interested please send a resume to info@docporters.com. The only change to the above description is that the position will be for 30-40 hours per week.

  23. About 6 months ago I purchase two 30" Cartridge Filter Housings and four cartridge filters from stpats.com. I used one filter housing and cartridge and it worked well. However, I decided to go a different direction and no longer need this equipment and filters. Below is what I have for sale: (2) 30" Cartridge Filter Housings with 2 sanitary gauges and 2 butterfly valves (purchased for $885 each) (2) 30" 5 Micron Polypropylene Cartridge Filters (purchased for $75 each) (1) 30" 0.45 Micron Polypropylene Cartridge Filters (purchased for $90) Make me an offer for any of the equipment/filters. The more items you buy the more I will discount.
  24. Do you mean you blow-down the boiler using the blow-down valve. I would not recommend blowing down using the pressure relief valve. That is a safety device and should not be touched unless testing or repairing. But if that's the only way to do it, it's better than not blowing down at all. Boilers should be blown-down daily. Typically there is both a bottom (liquid) and top (vapor) blow-down. All that is required is soft water, but you could also reduce wear on the boiler by adding oxygen scavenger chemicals via a metering pump. Boiler installation cost varies widely depending on location, difficulty of install, boiler size etc. I would get 3 quotes from someone who has installed a boiler previously in your area. Our city was extremely strict, and someone without the experience would have failed most inspections causing re-work and delays. Try and get them to bid the job as lump sum and not time and materials.
