  1. Yeah never used this type of cap before, we are looking for an ROPP machine at the moment
  2. Hey all, I'm looking for a wine cap crimper for one of our new bottles. We bought a Chinese one that no electrician around here will touch. We are willing to put up with a manual/handheld one for now, but are also probably going to want a semi-automated one sooner or later. I can only seem to find wine CORKERS which we definitely do not need. Any hot leads? Thanks!!
  3. Klattig, The couple of guilds I've sat in on do not care. That is not necessarily a bad thing, NGS is useful in a ton of ways like Southernhighlander has pointed out. The purpose of (most) guilds is to strengthen local businesses(distilleries) and to have a larger voice when it comes to production/distribution laws that the big guys don't have to worry about. Pretty much local guys vs. InBev, not so much shaming production facilities for their techniques. You can be proud of what you do and still work with other distilleries to fight the big guys, even if they don't adhere to your production standards.
  4. Thanks for all the input! I was steered towards an electric boiler by the company supplying our still. We have a small(er) facility and from what I understood, there are different rules for gas fired vs. electric boilers. Those rules being explosion proof rooms and general proximity to other equipment. I was told that you could put an electric boiler pretty much anywhere, while a gas fired boiler has to be much more isolated and must adhere to a laundry list of other regulations for it. Is this not the case? I was also told the warm up time shouldn't be any longer than a gas fired boiler. So much contradicting info! I will take all of this into account, thanks again for the advice everyone!
  5. Hey all, We are running our batches of infused vodkas through a little glass seamless lab still to make sure the proof is dead on. (We had it contract bottled to start and want to be sure of the proof). I have a concern that we are not running it a accurately as possible because though we have a piece of lab equipment, we are not a lab! What is the best way to run this piece of equipment? Do you run it pretty much dry? I figured you'd run it dry, but any time we do that, the sugar bakes onto the bulb and takes forever to get off. If that is the way it has to be though, we will obviously do it. Any suggestions would be awesome. Thanks!
  6. Hey all, We are currently in the market for a boiler. I was excited to hear that the 250 gallon still we are getting in can be run off of a 50kw electric boiler, as opposed to the monstrous gas fired boilers I've used in the past. I am having a hard time getting answers on pricing from the companies I have contacted. Does anyone in here have a ballpark estimate for the pricing of such a piece of equipment, and how much they paid to have it plumbed in? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks!!
  7. Thanks for all the input, it's easy to get stuck on one website thinking it's your only option! We are getting transtore tanks that have 2" triclamp ports, and are reducing everything else (pump, hoses) down to 1.5" by just using a 2-->1.5" reducers on the tanks since it seems that 1.5" seems to be the standard size when it comes to FIP pumps, and also ordering a lot of hose it cuts down the cost. It's funny all the little stuff you forget you need til you actually trace your system and figure it out. Thanks again for the new resources!
  8. I'm looking for a piece that we only have one of, but need to buy about five more. Attached is a picture, but basically it is so we can incorporate a filter we use that is 1"OD 3/4"ID into our new system of using 1.5" hose with triclamp fittings. I have looked everywhere and cannot seem to find them! If anyone knows where I could find more it'd be much appreciated!
  9. I am looking for a pump similar to ones I've used before. I am looking for a mobile, variable, 3hp FIP pump with 2" fittings and cannot seem to find one. In my search, I am directed to companies that have one or two FIPs that don't quite fit our specifications. Is there a place with a larger catalog of pumps, or somewhere I can get a pump fitting these specifications? Thanks!
  10. The owner of my company is looking to buy a "Figgins Reciprocator" still and I was wondering if anyone in here has used one before. Does the unique double pot design into a single column run well? I don't quite get the point of having two pots and am curious about any advantages/disadvantages anyone may be aware of. Attached is a link to some info on it. Thanks! https://www.stilldragon.org/discussion/673/the-figgins-reciprocator
  11. Got one off of morewinemaking.com , it was about $150 instead of $400 and the guys on the bottling line love it. Especially if you have few people on the line and do large quantities step by step, it is super helpful. Thanks for your feedback everyone!
  12. http://www.piwine.com/italian-hand-held-heat-tunnel.html I found this tool to be remarkably helpful, but was wondering if anyone knew where to get it for under $400? Thanks!
  13. I can't seem to get a clear answer from this one, excuse my ignorance on the subject. When creating a certain liqueur with my former employer, we treated sugars(maple syrup) and other additives(coffee and coffee extract) as water when proofing. I figured the relatively high density of these liquids may skew the results. They were off a bit from treating them like water and we found ourselves correcting with water when we got the results back from the lab with the seamless glass still that gave us a precise ABV. This was an enormous pain in the ass and we found ourselves going back to the lab the better part of ten times before we achieved the desired proof. TL,DR: What is the best solution to properly proofing liqueurs and spirits with added sugar? Thanks! Minogue
  14. That's a good question. If I'm not mistaken, it depends on the percentage of your own distilled spirit vs neutral spirit ratio. If you ask the TTB a few times, you may get the answer you are hoping to get eventually. They are happy to answer those questions, though you may get a different answer depending on which agent answers. Good luck!

  19. I'm trying to get a feel from anyone who has used wax to seal their bottles. Is it easy to set up and use in house? Isnit worth sourcing? And lastly do you think it increased the overall aesthetic of the product? Thanks for the input.

  21. Hello all, I am a distiller-turned-gardener due to some recent events at my former place of work. I am not allowed to work in this state as a distiller for twelve months after my quitting. I am ready to relocate in order to continue my career as a distiller. I am confident in all of my abilities from mashing to fermenting to distillation to sanitation to TTB paperwork and so on and so forth. I am keeping up with my research and practices and cannot wait to get back into distilling professionally. Email me at kleclerc77@gmail.com if you are interested in seeing my resume. Thanks for your time!
