  1. your "our clients" page is a nice touch and very impressive! congrats.
  2. Best summary of this issue that I have found: http://www.winespectator.com/webfeature/show/id/Shipping-Laws-State-by-State_1049
  3. Howdy Neighbor! I know these guys are on Kent Island: http://www.blackwaterdistilling.com/ and it looks like these guys are in St. Mikes: https://www.facebook.com/LyonDistilling and also in Baltimore: http://adiforums.com/index.php?showtopic=5625&hl= My distillery is in Lancaster, but I have a small sailboat in Havre De Grace..
  4. If your operation ends up being anything like mine you will continue to be presented with "opportunities" like this going forward. In my humble opinion stuff like this usually just ends up being a distraction. I assume you have a business plan and a pretty good idea of what you need to accomplish in order to get up and running. Its better to be spending time and energy figuring out how to make the products that you want to make/fit your brand/match your business plan rather than responding to opportunities that other people present to you; particularly if your not even up and running yet. Just my $0.02
  5. I think you need to first select your original DSP license, and then the TIB approvals are listed as amendments under that; or something like that. The actual approvals are not listed under the applications you submitted as one might expect.
  6. Related article on the same/similar issue from a ways back: http://www.wired.com/2011/05/ff_angelsshare/all/
  7. Instead of using a kettle with heating pipes inside, have you considered just starting with a jacketed tank instead? Perhaps something like this: http://www.sigmapackaging.com/equipment/detail/8443 And because I always hate when people respond to my posts without actually answering my question; I have spent 20 minutes trying to teach myself how to answer your question. Best to assume everything below this point is wrong.. 800 gallons = 6,400lb of water Lets assume you need to heat from 70F to 212F for an increase of 142F 142 degree temp gain * 6,400lb of water/mash is 16,131,200 BTU We want to get to boiling within an hour, so we need about 266,666 BTU per minute or 4,700,000 watts The heat transfer coefficient of copper for water is about 400 (W/m2 K)' Im going to assume a heat fluid temp of 400F Using an online calculator it looks like it might take about 80 Square Meters of copper surface area to get 4.7 million watts transfer Thats almost 900 Square Feet. Sounds like a lot..
  8. We went with one of these: https://www.google.com/search?q=50+gallon+drum+heater&num=100&safe=off&espvd=2&source=lnms&tbm=shop&sa=X&ei=UuN5VI7vBcXOsQTjwYHgCA&ved=0CAgQ_AUoAQ&biw=1920&bih=936 Plugged into one of these: http://morebeer.com/products/ranco-digital-temperature-controller-wired.html?site_id=5
  9. I think I understand what you are asking, and what needs clarified. Anything is "possible" with enough time/energy; but what we really care about is the "practical". Even starting with NGS diluted down to 50% abv it is still not practical to to get an average 95% output on a 6 plate still. I think the key to your question is that by starting with 95% nsg, that you then dilute down to 50% and re-distill, you do not need to hit the 95% on that final pass. Because it started at 95% it has already passed the legal threshold to call it vodka.
  10. Your post makes it sounds like you plan to purchase from all four suppliers of this style bottle; otherwise why would you care about the variance between suppliers? Perhaps since the visual of the fill level seems very important to you; you could test the variance of fill of four bottles from the same supplier. I know my bottles (all from the same supplier) vary a lot on where the fill level hits. I think this is perhaps because they have a very large base/tick glass bottom.
  11. The bottle of Titos I have contains a required commodity statement "Distilled from 100% Corn". This is the statement that would be correct for products identified as "Group 2" GROUP 2 -Neutral Spirits/Alcohol produced by original distillation -Vodka produced by original distillation -Grain Spirits produced by original distillation -Distilled Gin All products in group two are either Gin or something created from original distillation. "Vodka produced by redistillation" is in Group 1 and requires the commodity statement of "100% NEUTRAL SPIRITS DISTILLED FROM CORN” or "100% CORN NEUTRAL SPIRITS" At my distillery I am making Vodka from redistilled GNS and so I went with the commodity statement of "100% GRAIN NEUTRAL SPIRITS." It would seem that Tito's is claiming to be made from original distillation, and not GNS, based on the commodity statement they are using. It will be interesting to see if this statement changes now that they are under the spotlight. http://www.ttb.gov/spirits/bam/chapter1.pdf
  12. My apologies if that statement was found offensive. It was meant more as joke, and that is why I included the smiley/winking face. I have been to Inner Mongolia, Beijing, Guangzhou and Hong Kong, and hope to make it back again in the future.
  13. http://www.beverageworld.com/articles/full/15183/china-gaining-foothold-in-high-end-bottle-manufacturing www.youtube.com/watch?v=wk9H5ZDWAlE "ROCKWOOD & HINES GLASS LTD, is the largest glass factory in China with 16 furnaces, 12 fully automatic lines and 10 semi-automatic production lines ,a Joint venture between a French and Chinese companies." They may not directly own the factory the bottles are made in, but its pretty cool you can actually go and visit the facility. Most distilleries probably do not own the factory/building they operate out of so not really sure anyone cares who owns it. Either way, if you take the argument far enough, with China being a communist country it may all be owned by the state anyways "all land is owned by the state and purchasers trade only the right to use property on the land for up to 70 years"
  14. I believe its called the vega bottle
  15. You are not going to get many replies to your inquiry above because your post is nonsensical and/or confusing. Perhaps you should re-post your inquiry with greater detail and confirm the numbers you shared are what you actually meant to type.
  16. The flavored rye experiments we have done in our tasting room have been surprisingly popular. As a result of this we are hoping to start bottling our most popular ones in the next few months. As I write this post I am enjoying a cocktail one of our bartenders created using our black pepper rye. -The Pop Deluxe- 2 oz black pepper rye 1.5 oz smoked vanilla simple syrup Top with Root Beer Garnish with a cherry I would not even know how to begin to describe this drink with words!

  18. Thank you for this detailed and informed response dhdunbar.
  19. I lease space in my building to a brewery that operates next to my DSP. Our spaces are separated by a wall and we each have our own production equipment so no product ever moves between the two spaces. They use my steam boiler to fire their kettle and I will be using their glycol chiller. Physical separation of the spaces is needed. I believe there is also an option to "share" some of the space/production equipment by using an alternating premises, but it sounds complicated. Previous threads on this topic include some info on the alternating premises option: http://adiforums.com/index.php?showtopic=3851 http://adiforums.com/index.php?showtopic=2072 http://adiforums.com/index.php?showtopic=882 http://adiforums.com/index.php?showtopic=86
  20. Just tried it, and it seems like AlchoDens will do the correction. http://www.katmarsoftware.com/alcodens.htm You can use the program free/trial it for about 10 times I think..
  21. The GS1 membership is only needed if you need your own base number and the ability to create lots of your own bar-codes. Most people just purchase bar codes a few at a time from a re-seller like http://www.nationwidebarcode.com/order-barcodes/
  22. I believe the Bulleit bourbon comes out of the Four Roses distillery and their Rye comes from MGP. Either way they don't run their own distillery, but its certainly not made with GNS. And to be fair this gentleman is offering his marketing services, not his secret vodka recipe.
  23. If I was not running a distillery I think I would go into the floor drain business. That or track systems for sliding barn doors! I paid $37.50 for 20" sections of cast iron trench grating: http://www.trenchdrainsupply.com/specs/Z886-DGC.pdf I then made my own wooden molds for the trench and poured concrete with a lip to fit the grates. Significantly more work building molds and also removing them after the pour, but only $22.50 per foot. If your interested in going this route I can give more details on how I built the molds and got the slope, etc. So far they are working just as well as pre-built system the brewery next door went with.
