I write the company blog for Trysk Print Solutions (trysk.com/blog). When I heard about this online forum, I thought it might be a good resource to solicit story ideas and comments. Don't worry, I won't be spamming you with blog posts, I'm here to learn more about distilling and to generate material. For example: This month we'll be writing about the recent boom in bourbon production. Has your distillery recently decided to make bourbon, or more bourbon? What's driving your decision-making? If you'd like to be quoted in our upcoming post, please leave a comment here! Or we can arrange a Skype interview if you'd like to chat in more detail. Thanks! -Wes Andrews towncriercopywriting.com

  12. Where to start? Been to a class, working on a business plan to secure an offer on a building. Not a lot of context to work with in Pennsylvania, especially in my great-lakes region. Every answer seems to raise two more questions. Trying to get legitimate pricing has been problematic at best. After some talking we were able to get rough numbers from still manufacturers, but bottles, labels and all those finer points are still elusive. Seems like the craft 'boom' has cause quite a backlog in the system and vendors are swamped getting through the inquiries. Local zoning put us 6 months behind by wasting our time with a bait and switch on approvals which wasn't too thrilling. There isn't a lot of context to work in within PA, which is a double edged sword. Hope to be on the cusp of the revolution, yet we're stuck blazing a new trail, which slows us down considerably. Happy to talk with anyone else in-state that is in/through the process. Let's make it PA Preferred!

  18. I work at a distillery in California, we currently store our barrels on their heads on custom made pallets. All fine and dandy, they are 5'x5' pallets and they work just fine. The two problems I have with them: 1) They take a lot of time to construct where I could be doing more important things around the distillery. 2) Being larger than standard size, they take up more space and pose challenges to moving logistics and destroy our storage efficiency. Having seen other distilleries and rickhouses where they also store their barrels on their heads, I noticed that not only do they use pallets that are standard size, but they were bought in bulk. Taking care of both of my issues. The question I have is if anyone is familiar with a pallet supplier for these purposes? Is there a well-known/industry standard company that I am unaware of? Any help would be great and I thank you in advance! EDIT: Sorry for the duplicate, moderators feel free to delete this thread.
  19. We are looking for a distiller to help with a start up distillery for bourbon production. Profit sharing offered. Be a part of a awesome startup here in Oklahoma. Call Alvin at 405-229-9772.
  20. Hi, I'm a college student studying finance and accounting at the University of Kentucky. I would like to work for a micro-distillery over the summer of 2014 as a way of learning more about the industry. Preferably I would be able to work for a distillery here in Kentucky and one that is producing bourbon but I'm really open to about anything. I don't have any immediate interest in opening a distillery so the type of product is a lot less important to me than finding someone that I'm able to learn from. As for what I bring to the table, I'm able to help with bookkeeping. I'm proficient in using MS Excel. I've worked plenty of manual labor jobs as well, so I'm willing and able to do that too. If anybody wants to see a resume shoot me a PM and I'll get it out. Thank you all.
  21. I want to be clear here - I'm not complaining just really confused. I desperately want to try this Hillrock Solera aged bourbon whiskey.. I was under the impression that bourbon could only be aged in new charred oak barrels and that finishing a bourbon in a non-oak/new barrel would be considered flavoring. It is finished in sherry cask, similar to Angel's Envy (port) which I also have to wonder about. Am I grossly mistaken or is this a technicality? I'd also like to know how Wilderness Trace was able to label their sorghum distillate as "rum" seeing as one of the few rum restrictions is that it can only be fermented sugar cane? Anybody have thoughts on this? Thanks in advance. NAB PS are these ocean aged spirits considered "in transport" or something? I thought all aging had to be done in a bonded area (i.e. not boats or trains)?
  22. Whiskey barrels are all full size (53 gallons) Can be picked up in Bardstown KY. Have a variety of full size one fill rye and bourbon barrels available for sale. Great for aging other spirits or beer. Also have a limited stock of aging whiskey barrels available for sale- from a few months old to 7 years old. Selections of rye or bourbon, mostly from Indiana. Please e-mail for pricing. orangedave@gmail.com
  23. Can anyone point me in the right direction for finding a contract distiller for bourbon. I would really like it to be in KY as I think it will be important for marketing purposes in addition to the fact I live there. I have already tried some of the bigger ones without much luck. My intention is to create a new bourbon through contract distilling so I can get things up and running quicker. Eventually, my plan is to do a micro distillery. I realize this isn't as simple as it sounds but I would then be able to concentrate on legal issues, marketing and getting a still up and running. Thanks, Fred
  24. Can anyone recommned a few companies that can supply aged bourbon?
